Money-launderer Ralph Reed to hold McCain fundraiser

Ralph Reed, the Jack Abramoff-tainted GOP operative and former head of the Christian Coalition, is cozying up to John McCain, and the Arizona senator doesn’t have a problem associating with this character—as long as the buxx flow into his campaign coffers from a fundraiser to be held in Atlanta next week. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW):

On Thursday afternoon, Republicans around Georgia received an invitation from Reed, who will serve as a host of a “special event” for McCain at the downtown Marriot Marquis on Aug. 18.

“John McCain believes in a strong national defense, a smaller, more accountable government, steady economic growth and opportunity, the dignity of life and traditional values,” wrote Reed, whose 2006 campaign for lieutenant governor sank under the weight of evidence detailing his relationship with Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff — much of it uncovered by McCain’s Indian Affairs Committee.

John McCain may want to review the 66 pages of correspondence between Mr. Reed and convicted felon, Jack Abramoff, which was obtained by his committee. Those emails between Reed and Abramoff are posted at governmentdocs.org.

Reed has also agreed to serve as a member of the McCain Victory 2008 team.  He also still has his talons deep into the fundie infrastructure, so it’s clear McCain still longs for the Base of the party.

“[Reed’s] hypocrisy is legion — now matched only by John McCain’s attending a fundraiser he’s helping host,” said Melanie Sloan, CREW’s executive director. “You just have to wonder who’s the bigger hypocrite.”

...John Feehery, a former House GOP communications strategist who has bemoaned Abramoff’s corrupting influence on the party, said Reed maintains strong ties to Christian conservatives, a key GOP demographic McCain needs to attract. For instance, in the Indian Affairs Committee’s Abramoff report, Reed boasts of having contact information for 3,000 pastors and 90,000 religious conservative households in Alabama alone.

McCain has so far refused to cancel the fundraiser.

Oh good god I’m having flashbacks to the flight we shared.

This is what happens when your opponent can out raise you by more than two-to-one.  McCain shouldn’t need to take dirty money like this.  The fact that he’s going to the Ralph Reed well indicates that he either has no fear of negative media coverage whatsoever or that is so strapped for cash that he is being forced to roll the dice and take his chances.

It’s either a sign of incredible strength (he’s so mavericky, his credibility can’t be touched) or incredible weakness.

Zifnab,
That suggests that McCain would have a problem with it in the first place. McCain was one of the Keating 5—dirty money is what he rolls around in at night, no matter what kind of game he talks. As far as his lack of fear of negative media coverage is concerned, well, I’d say he has reason to feel secure.

Hmm…if only some Senator would champion ‘Campaign-Finance Reform’...oh, wait…Awkward.

Hey, I agree in practice.  But in theory, McCain would at least pretend to stay clear of this sort of thing.  He’s got Keating 5 in his history, so he’s going to want to steer clear of any scandals that resonate.  He’s working very, very hard on improving his image and distinguishing himself from his Republican cohorts.  This is the sort of thing that could pull the albatross even tighter around his neck.  If he thought he could get the money more easily from alternative sources, I imagine he’d be avoiding these guys at all costs.

Nah, he needs these guys. Remember, the overlap between the remaining Bush supporters and the christian right is huge. Without them, he doesn’t have a hope in hell. He doesn’t have much of a chance with them, but he cannot win without them, so he’ll take their money and suck their cocks and do whatever else he has to in order to get their approval.

God likes his money like he likes his robes: laundered. Can’t blame Ralph for doing the Lord’s work. Don’t blame John either, his sugar momma can’t pay for everything.

Off Topic:

“John McCain believes in a strong national defense”

As an Air Force brat I really wish I’d see someone promise to have an EFFICIENT national defense.
These bastards keep throwing away Trillions of dollars for weapons that don’t work while vets end up sleeping on the streets selling Real Change.
