Music Fridays: End of the Year

Music

Let's get this Panda Party started! Only two days left in the year, so you best be partying. I know most of us have to work today, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't Panda Party.

With that in mind, here's another one of my favorite records of the year:

This was definitely the year for women in music, as far as I'm concerned: Wild Flag, Shilpa Ray, Dum Dum Girls, CSS, Le Butcherettes, Vivian Girls, and probably a bunch more that I'll remember after my coffee is consumed. All put out great albums this year, all worth checking out. But I have a special place in my heart for Shilpa Ray, who is intense in a way that pretty much no one else can do effectively right now.

So, Panda Party! Drop in.

Shilpa Ray. Front row at the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights. My ears rang for 48 hours and it was so worth it.

St. Vincent, tUnE-yArdS, Eleanor Friedberger, Ladytron, off the top of my head.

I owe you a hat tip, Amanda, for turning me on to Shilpa Ray, as I checked her out (and ended up buying “Teenage and Torture”) after reading about her here. Interestingly, I saw Beat the Devil (SR’s old band) opening for Menomena at South Street Seaport a few years ago, and was pretty impressed at the time (“Hey, that’s a harmonium she’s playing! Cool!”), but I didn’t realize it was the same person (and a lot of the same songs) until after I read your post and did some research of my own.

The song in the video is a favorite of mine, too—I even put it on a mix CD (between St. Vincent and Warpaint) that I gave to a couple of friends, kind of a “what-I’ve-been-listening-to-lately” compilation. Good stuff!

Indeed, that is some rockin’ harmonium playing. I heard you mention her before, but I think I couldn’t watch the video previously linked because of being in Japan or something, but no problems with this one, and she is amazing. Definitely need to legally acquire her stuff, now.

We actually go the other way and sometimes have issues - the spouse and older kid like both J-pop and K-pop, in small doses.  The spouse sometimes has it as background noise while soldering, of all things, though that is more likely to call for metal or world/industrial.
