My New Favorite Casual Activity

Just figure out things you haven’t done since Bush was in office.  It makes it seem like it was so very long ago.  I, for one, haven’t had sushi since Bush was in office, something I’m going to rectify today.  What about you?

I haven’t been furious at my government since Bush was in office… not sure I want to change that though.

I haven’t been in a serious romantic relationship since Bush was in office. I mean an actual “Yes, I’m in a relationship with this person” type of relationship rather than a “Oh, her? No, we just fooled around for a while” type relationship. Not so sure whether I’ll do that again, though, whether I want to or not.

Especially if it’s marinated in a butter/garlic sauce and then slowly roasted until just tender.

I haven’t roasted a chicken since Bush was in office.

Comment #7: MAJeff, God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  10:47 AM

I haven’t listened to the Black Crowes, talked on a phone you had to dial or seen a decent sequel to “the Matrix” since Bush was in office. I’m hoping to rectify all that now.

Comment #8: Michael Clear  on  01/23  at  10:54 AM

Despite my title, I have not eaten Nutella since Bush was in office.  Crepes for dessert this weekend!

...I hadn’t gotten laid since Bush was in office due to sick boyfriendage, but, fortunately, that was amended last night, so I can’t really list that.

I haven’t gotten preg - wait, no.

I haven’t played Scrabble since Bush was in office.  I also haven’t been in a room with a bunch of high schoolers since Bush was in office, but I’m fixing that tomorrow when I go to take my SAT.

It has NOT been long enough since Bush was in office.

...is Dogbreath hijacking the God of Biscuits now?  Can he even do that, since MAJeff is a god?

Comment #12: Atheist Feminazi  on  01/23  at  11:17 AM

Looks like I’m the next one to have the poseur take my name.

Comment #13: MAJeff, God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  11:17 AM

This has bugged me since I moved up here, where the hell do you get decent sushi in Ohio?

Comment #14: Godless Heathen  on  01/23  at  11:21 AM

I got so spoiled on sushi in coastal NC.  I have had passable sushi since coming to Dallas-Fort Worth, but it’s still not anywhere near the quality for the most part.

And I’ve had sushi so seldom since moving.  It makes my heart ache.

Comment #15: Atheist Feminazi  on  01/23  at  11:23 AM

Godless Heathen, where in Ohio? There are at least 3 good ones in Columbus and 1 in Dayton I know. Not sure about elsewhere.

Comment #16: Mustella  on  01/23  at  11:31 AM

Hey!  I have plenty of gods!

And I know nothing of this “Ohio” you speak of.

Comment #17: Atheist Feminazi  on  01/23  at  11:31 AM

I, for one, haven’t had sushi since Bush was in office, something I’m going to rectify today.

Holy shit, how are you still alive?  I didn’t START eating sushi until Bush was in office.

Comment #18: Zifnab25  on  01/23  at  11:45 AM

If you’re in NE Ohio, there’s a small chain called Sakura that’s pretty damn good.  You can find one in Lakewood and one in Fairlawn, and there may be more.  I remember passing more sushi places in and around Westlake, but I can’t remember their names.  In a pinch, the House of Hunan in Akron has passable sushi.

I haven’t baked bread, had sex, drawn a picture, or blogged since Bush was in office.  If I’m ambitious, I can get 75% of these activities done before Sunday.

Comment #19: Kyso K  on  01/23  at  11:47 AM

Can he even do that, since MAJeff is a god?

Haven’t seen any DECENT gods since Bush was in power.

Comment #20: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  01/23  at  11:48 AM

I haven’t gone kayaking since Bush was in office.  Haven’t been skiiing, either.  Guess which one I’ll do first?

Comment #21: Ms Kate  on  01/23  at  11:49 AM

How can you go eight years without sushi?!? The mind boggles…
I haven’t made a cheesecake in eight years, and it’s gonna be a four-day weekend, seems like a good opportunity try a hand at that again.

Comment #22: redwards  on  01/23  at  11:59 AM

Redwards, I think you’re confused - I know I was at first.

It doesn’t mean something you haven’t done since before Bush was in office.  Just, something you haven’t done since when he was in office.

Like, if you haven’t had your first post-Bush sex, or sushi.

Comment #23: Atheist Feminazi  on  01/23  at  12:00 PM

I haven’t not felt guilty about the world I’m leaving to my daughter since Bush Jr. was in office.  And while I do hope Obama becomes what we need to deal with our many problems, I will cautiously watch from the sidelines…

Comment #24: MikeEss  on  01/23  at  12:01 PM

I can drive past the White House without flipping it off, finally.  I can take the public tour of the White House again, although the last time I did so, Lyndon Johnson lived there. (I just never bothered from 93-01)  More seriously, I’ve not had a good paying job for most of the Bush years and hope to change that.  I’ve worked fairly steadily but never at jobs that paid well.  I don’t see that changing soon.  The academic job market is only getting tighter and with my wife’s career here in DC we are not moving anytime soon.  I’m not complaining, she loves her job and makes good money and I am proud of her, but it does mean I am limited as to job opportunities.

OK, enough gloom….

Now I can watch the news on TV without wincing and muting whenever the President of the US comes onto the screen!

Comment #25: Woodrowfan  on  01/23  at  12:02 PM

Stopped drawing comics around the time Bush took office. I miss art

Comment #26: KJK::Hyperion  on  01/23  at  12:02 PM

Until this morning, I hadn’t seen an episode of Doctor Who since Bush was in office!  Whew!  Glad that drought is over!

Comment #27: damnedyankee  on  01/23  at  12:11 PM

I’m going to talk freely on the damned phone without fearing that somebody’s listening. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but jeez, the news stories about that shit gave me the creepies.

Comment #28: ginmar  on  01/23  at  12:19 PM

INTPagan, I don’t know how often you get over to Dallas proper, but Little Katana is excellent (and like a five minute walk from home!), and I’ve heard very good things about Zen Sushi. Sushi Zushi was pretty okay but has gone downhill of late. And of course there’s the overrated and overpriced Nobu…

Comment #29: kaninchen  on  01/23  at  12:26 PM

Well- I haven’t had a baby since Clinton was in office, but I don’t intend to celebrate Obama’s victory by having another.

Comment #30: Drachonfire  on  01/23  at  12:27 PM

I haven’t had sex since Bush was in office.  But, since I’m off work today, the kids are in school/daycare, and the husband and I have a lunch date, I may just rectify that situation this afternoon.

I also haven’t had ice cream or been to the library since Bush was in office.  I may do both of those today as well.

Comment #31: ks  on  01/23  at  12:30 PM

I haven’t watched ANY movie but Eagle Eye since Bush was in office.

Conversely, the Obama Administration is apparently wreaking havoc on my chess game. Just six hours after he was sworn in (the first time), I was getting slaughtered.

Comment #32: Rick Massimo  on  01/23  at  12:33 PM

I don’t think I’ve purchased a bottle of Scotch since Bush was in office. Maybe I’ll go buy myself some Laphroiag. I also haven’t felt optimistic about the country’s leadership since about 1993, so maybe I’ll do that, too.

Comment #33: tb  on  01/23  at  12:33 PM

I haven’t baked bread, had sex, drawn a picture, or blogged since Bush was in office.

I’m at least baking bread today.  The rest, well, whenever.

Comment #34: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  01:06 PM

I haven’t seriously laughed at Americans since Bush left office.

Comment #35: Andrew  on  01/23  at  01:08 PM

I haven’t watched Have I Got News For You since Bush was in office. I haven’t watched an episode of M*A*S*H since Bush was in office. I haven’t been to the gym since Bush was in office (recovery from a nasty cold).

Comment #36: Jesurgislac  on  01/23  at  01:21 PM

I can watch a newscast all the way through again. Not that I do that a lot in any case, but it’s nice to know that I can without seeing that dull smirking face and listening to that Know-Nothing “speechifying”.

Comment #37: Gracchus.  on  01/23  at  02:02 PM

No sushi for 8 years? That’d drive me nuts. Luckily, we have an amazing Japanese restaurant here in Hillsboro, just a few blocks form our house.

Comment #38: Keith  on  01/23  at  02:55 PM

If you mean what haven’t I done since bush left office on 1/20:  I haven’t slammed my head into my keyboard prior to blogging the latest outrage.  I look forward to a future of blogging sans head-slamming for a long long long time.  Yay!

Comment #39: Ginger Mayerson  on  01/23  at  03:24 PM

MAJeff, can you get sourdough to come out right on this coast?  I used to haul the starter cross country, but I can’t do that anymore.  East coast wild yeasts don’t seem to cut it.

Comment #40: Ms Kate  on  01/23  at  03:48 PM

No, i haven’t been able to. I’ve given up on sourdough for a while.  The half-fridge I have in my apartment just won’t accommodate much.  Sometimes I’ll do a rye, but I usually make wheat bread and toss in whatever dried herbs seem interesting on a given day.

Comment #41: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  03:52 PM

You people are making me hungry.  Although I have to object to the use of shortening in MAJeff’s cookie recipe.  Unless you’re making them for someone who’s lactose intolerant, they really should be made with butter.

Comment #42: keshmeshi  on  01/23  at  04:53 PM

Why would butter bother somebody who is lactose intolerant??

Milk allergic I’ll grant, but butter has very little lactose in it.  Both of my lactose-intolerant sons can eat Albanian Leek Pie that my husband makes with his homemade puff pastry.

Comment #43: Ms Kate  on  01/23  at  05:51 PM

Why would butter bother somebody who is lactose intolerant??

It seems to be the fat content combined with the lactose that can cause problems (I have had some very unpleasant episodes after eating high-fat but (relatively) low-lactose items), but I do know a couple of people who are so lactose-intolerant that even the small amount in butter bothers them.

Comment #44: Mnemosyne  on  01/23  at  06:53 PM

re: sourdough

I’ve twice tried to keep a sourdough starter alive here (CT) and failed miserably both times.  Basically it would be all bubbly and sourdoughy and then just… die.  And before its untimely death, it would do exactly nothing to leaven bread.

It was sad because it smelled like sourdough bread and I just wanted some SO BAD.

Anyways, the King Arthur Flour Company sells some starter that I might try.  Trying to capture wild yeast is a freaking wild goose chase.

Anyways, I haven’t had pizza since Bush left office.  I should get on that.

Comment #45: LauraB  on  01/23  at  08:40 PM

Made my first loaf of bread and ordered my first Thai takeout of the Obama administration today.

Comment #46: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  08:48 PM

Continuing the food theme: I haven’t had pizza since Bush left office.

I haven’t been to a movie, seen my big sister, or been to church since Bush left office.

I did, however, celebrate inauguration night by going to my baby sister’s first drag show! :D

Comment #47: Nenya  on  01/23  at  10:43 PM

Continuing the food theme: I haven’t had pizza since Bush left office.

Haven’t had pizza for three years.

During which I’ve dropped a hell of a lot of weight.  The correlation is left as an exercise for those examining the small print on the Hell Pizza menu…

Comment #48: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  01/24  at  02:16 AM

I haven’t gotten piss drunk on pitchers of strawberry margaritas.  I’ll be rectifying that.  Especially since it’s Spookymas tomorrow.

I also haven’t had to talk my husband down regarding the latest Bush fowlup since the little monkey left.  I don’t see having any such incidents with President Obama.  I also haven’t had to listen to “OMG he’s a Islam” chatter anymore.  These are not things that I’ll miss, mind you.

Comment #49: Spooky Skeptic  on  01/24  at  10:00 AM

I haven’t changed the oil in my car since the first GWB administration, back in 2004.

(I don’t drive it a lot)

I haven’t been in a romantic relationship since Bush was in office. Since before Bush was in office, actually. :(
