National Organization for Marriage Snail Mail DOMA FAIL

FundiesL-O-S-E-R-SLGBT

The National Organization for Marriage needs some cash now that it’s flushed who knows how much down the crapper with that ridiculous ad a week or so ago. So it’s back to the drawing board—traditional direct mail. One of my readers, Orion 45, passed along a copy of this fish wrap. Their campaign is to beg for buxx to fund its “DOMA Defense Fund.” Because, you know, that “President Obama has declared war on the Defense of Marriage Act.” If only.

Together you and I can make it crystal clear to the powerful misguided politicians in Washington:

Don’t sabotage DOMA, the one federal law protecting U.S. taxpayers from being forced by judges to treat same-sex unions as marriages. Don’t let Washington politicians push such a divisive and intrusive issue against the will of the majority of the American people.

So how do we do it? What does it take to get the attention of Washington politicians? Out-of-touch politicians pay attention to one thing: the threat of tough, organized and determined political opposition. So NOM’s 2009 DOMA Defense Fund aims to do just that: NOM’s 2009 DOMA Defense Fund will make your voice heard in the halls of power in Congress-to make sure every member of Congress knows that in his or her district there are people to whom marriage matters and that we vote.

NOM’s powerful new technology allows ordinary Americans to multiply their voices with a few clicks of the mouse, swelling the chorus of pro-marriage voices to a never-before-heard crescendo; Americans of every race, creed and color speaking together for God’s truth about marriage.

...You know it and I know the mainstream media portrays Christians and other people of good will who support marriage as hate-filled bigots. Gay marriage activists’ goal is to silence, intimidate and depress the opposition. Bullying and intimidation is at the heart of their movement’s tactics because silencing your voice is the only way that lies and hatred can prevail over truth and love.

Can I hurl now? BTW, NOM has released new radio ads, specifically targeting Washington, DC and Connecticut. You can listen here.

Direct mail and radio. If the medium is the message, the message here is: we’re talking to you, bitter old farts of America.

DOMA, the one federal law protecting U.S. taxpayers from being forced by judges to treat same-sex unions as marriages.

Frankly I don’t give a rat’s ass if you shitstains think my marriage isn’t real.  You want to stew in your bigotry, have at it.  I just want the government to have to treat us as if we were citizens with rights equal to yours.

“NOM’s powerful new technology allows ordinary Americans to multiply their voices with a few clicks of the mouse, swelling the chorus of pro-marriage voices to a never-before-heard crescendo;”

...why does this read like it refers to a small mammal and not an electronic pointing device?...

Comment #3: MikeEss  on  04/22  at  01:28 PM

So “truth and love” is now defined as trying to prevent two people who love each other from getting married simply because they are both of the same sex.

Likewise, “hatred and lies” is now defined as trying to obtain equal rights for a group that has faced systematic discrimination over the decades.

Good to know.

One reader suggested people who receive this slap the postage paid envelope onto old phone books and let NOM pay for it.

Oh noes!  They’ve discovered spam!

You know it and I know the mainstream media portrays Christians and other people of good will who support marriage as hate-filled bigots.

I don’t suppose “not being a hate-filled bigot” ever occurs to them as a possible solution to their PR problems.  Guess not.

It’s interesting the way NOM portrays it’s bigoted hateful views of gay people and gay relationships as truth and love while calling the people who want basic rights and equality for everyone, not just the majority, as being hatred.

I wonder how many of the people in the National Organization for Marriage, that bastion of traditional American Christian values, are on their first marriage, and how many, like those defenders of marriage and family Newt Gingrich and Rudy Giuliani have already gotten past their starter marriages, and are on marriage two or three?  The hypocrisy of people who can’t keep their own marriages together, and who blatantly cheat on their spouses, divorce their wives while they are fighting terminal illnesses and carry on multiple affairs while espousing monogamy and abstinence for everyone else is astounding.

Are all the conservatives and right wing Christians in this country insane or stupid?  Having people like Newt, Rudy and Rush as spokesmen for any kind of values is laughable, but to have them out talking up traditional family values is schizophrenic delusion at it’s worst.

Now we get to watch people who are too dumb to get out of a thunderstorm standing around telling the rest of us that their lives are somehow diminished by the fact that other people might want to form lasting relationships.

Why wasn’t the Reverend Phelps in the NOM video?  Their views are no different from his, that gays are dangerous to America, and God will surely strike us down as a nation if we suffer the queer to live.

Getting the American people to vote against their self interest is the most important part of this anti-gay crusade, of course.  The major fear behind these kind of things is that working people will begin to realize that they aren’t best served by the interests of corporations and the rich, and will start to vote for their own economic interest.  Anything to divide us, like using black against white, or foreign born against natural born, or gay against straight, anything that keeps people from realizing that they are being fleeced by the people who run things in this country is the goal.

I really like the cinder block idea, or maybe bags of garbage.

I still can’t get over the fact that they named themselves “NOM.” It’s like the right-wingers get all their names from the urban dictionary, then immediately forget.

Comment #9: Auguste  on  04/22  at  02:03 PM

I hope their direct mail campaign is a raging success and they’re able to fill their coffers with cash, just so long as the same people who gave the nod to those dumbass commercials get to decide what to do with the money. That first commercial was so bad, I think it hurt NOM more than it helped it, so they need to keep it up.

Comment #10: BigFagontheRag  on  04/22  at  02:20 PM

The sad thing is that they don’t even realize that Obama is against gay marriage.  He supports civil unions, but not gay marriage.  It’s like he sorta agrees with them, but they’re mad that he doesn’t agree enough.

I still can’t get over the fact that they named themselves “NOM.” It’s like the right-wingers get all their names from the urban dictionary, then immediately forget.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s an inside job where someone suggests silly names as a joke and no one realizes it’s a joke, and that person is just constantly laughing on the inside.  Or maybe it’s all a ploy to try to make us over-look the issues by adding humor.

Back in the day, one of the favorites was old tires or car batteries.  That way they got hit with the postage and the disposal fees.

This is like stupid speak to stupid people? It hurts my eyes to try to read the tripe. Oh the humanity! The gays are getting hooked up!!

You would think this would make them happy that people are committing themselves to a monogamous relationship. I never really understood the big deal about not wanting people that love each other to marry.

I was thinking of it as a euphemism for female masturbation.  Maybe I was misled by the “swelling of voices to a never-before-heard crescendo” bit.

Hey, baby, let me see you click that mouse…

One wishes Obama would draw from this the lesson that it’s fucking stupid and pointless for him to sorta agree with them, since he won’t get any credit for it anyway. Sigh.

Consider: they’re spreading word of their powerful digital networking technology via snail mail and terrestrial AM radio. They’ll be lucky if their intended audience of under-educated senior citizens understands what the “Send” and “Reply” buttons mean, let alone “Forward.”

I don’t think he’s doing it for “credit”.  He really is uncomfortable with gay marriage.

Not that it excuses a damn thing, but we knew when we voted him in that he wasn’t as progressive as we might like.

The one that the National Organization for Marriage, for one, would like to bring about. Xtian fantasist, Islamic fantasist, Jewish fantasist, whatever—all these fundies hold the same crappy attitude toward the happiness of anyone other than male priests and clan leaders.

I don’t know why NATO troops are bothering to fight on behalf of a regime that’s peachy-keen with placating the Taliban.

Because if we don’t, those guys all pile into an airplane and crash into one of our tallest buildings.

Assuming you’re serious, Karzai is the best we can do to prevent that? If he’s selling out his entire nation’s women to rape, I doubt he’ll mind appeasing his Islamic fantasists in other ways—just like the country where most of those airplane-pilers originally came from (but minus the oil).

If we’re there on a containment and scouring mission, fine—pull the troops and material in from Iraq and get the job done. And even if that’s a failure, another empire in the Afghani graveyard wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. But enough BS about preventing terrorism by instituting liberal democracy in these priest-infested tribal pestholes—not gonna happen, and it’s an insult to the troops.

Comment #29: Gracchus.  on  04/22  at  06:41 PM

Gracchus, the irony in all that is that the government of Afghanistan in power in 1978 was committed to women’s rights, including access to education, ending child brides, abolishing the burqa and such.  The conservative tribespeople revolted against the government, which was pro-Soviet, and our government started giving aid to the Afghan rebels to induce the Soviets to invade.

Hmmm.  Wonder where they got that impression.  Could that possibly be because…you ARE hate-filled bigots?

Bullying and intimidation is at the heart of their movement’s tactics because silencing your voice is the only way that lies and hatred can prevail over truth and love.

Because of course NOM would NEVER resort to bullying, intimidation, lies, and hatred!  Kind of like the Bush administration saying “We don’t torture.”

Comment #34: Icewyche  on  04/23  at  12:24 AM

And just how does DOMA protect taxpayers, specifically versus other Americans?  These folks can’t even write a good pitch letter.

As someone who’s written political direct mail in the past, I would suggest that the inclusion of the word “taxpayers” has nothing to do with logic or actual truth, but is instead intended to angry up the blood juuuuuuust a little bit more by almost subliminally suggesting that tax money will somehow be used to support gay marriage. It gives them a way to plant the seed without actually coming out and lying in a way that can be easily refuted.

However, you’re right on the larger point: it’s not a good pitch letter.
