NC: Greensboro reporter attacked by McCain/Palin supporter at rally

The rage-a-thon at the Palin rallies continues, this time during her trip to Elon College here in North Carolina, where Greensboro News & Record reporter Joe Killian (who was at ConvergeSouth on Friday recounting the event, though I didn’t get a chance to meet up with him while there) was kicked to the ground, assaulted by one of the McCain Mob.

Killian was out in the crowd, trying to interview some of the Obama supporters attending the rally when...

As he [the Obama supporter] was telling me a large, bearded man in full McCain-Palin campaign regalia got in his face to yell at him.

“Hey, hey,” I said. “I’m trying to interview him. Just a minute, okay?”

The man began to say something about how of course I was interviewing the Obama people when suddenly, from behind us, the sound of a pro-Obama rap song came blaring out of the windows of a dorm building. We all turned our heads to see Obama signs in the windows.

This was met with curses, screams and chants of “U.S.A” by McCain-Palin folks who crowded under the windows trying to drown it out and yell at the person playing the stereo.

It was a moment of levity in an otherwise very tense situation and so I let out a gentle chuckle and shook my head.

Oh, you think that’s funny?!” the large bearded man said. His face was turning red. “Yeah, that’s real funny…” he said.

And then he kicked the back of my leg, buckling my right knee and sending me sprawling onto the ground.

From my position there I saw the bottoms of a number of feet almost accidentally stomping me to death as the two political camps screamed back and forth, the music continued to blare and some of the Obama crowd moved the large bearded man and his friends away. When I was helped to my feet the bearded man was walking away quickly.

For a moment I considered running the bloated, twelve-sandwich eating prick down and beating the living hell out of him…and then I remembered that I’m a reporter, how much I enjoy being gainfully employed and how hard it would be to keep my job if I got into a fistfight with a guy at a political rally.

Killian then looked for security or some member of law enforcement, but when he returned, the Palin bootlicker was gone.

More below the fold.
You won’t believe the reason for this violent assault. Ed Cone:

In the comments at N&R political honcho Mark Binker’s blog, Guilford County GOP media chair Tony Wilkins says he spoke to the bearded man, and that the perp was angry over Killian’s recent post about a Palin-themed porn movie. This would be a good time for Tony Wilkins to say he was joking about premeditated battery on a local journalist, or to contact the police if he was serious.

The upcoming porno flick is titled “Nailin’ Pailin.” Killian’s entire post on the matter, aside from the excerpt of the description of the film, consisted of this:
It was only a matter of time. From the Frisky.com story
That is the alleged reason for the Palin rally beat-down. These people are sick, out of control, violent as hell, and you best believe we are going to have problems on election day if more of these knuckledraggers stoked by McCain/Palin come out of the woodwork. If you want to read about ConvergeSouth (I have liveblogging and video), it’s over at my pad.

If that article was enough to result in assaulting a journalist, I wonder what losing an election would prompt in this man (and others like him)?

It’s things like this that make me laugh out loud, literally, when someone calls Obama supporters “cultish.”

Comment #2: TLAD  on  10/18  at  08:08 PM

John Cole has more examples of similar crap. I especially like the sign that says “Charles Manson was a community organizer.”

Comment #3: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  10/18  at  08:11 PM

I wonder what the fallout would be if a journalist were trampled to death at one of these <strike>klan rallies</strike> McCain/Palin rallies?

Comment #4: The Opoponax  on  10/18  at  08:12 PM

So, a reporter, Joe, at a McCain-Palin rally reports that he was attacked.

No other reports of this event, but we do have his buddy, Mark, working at the same news outlet, quoting Joe’s report as proof that the attack did occur.

We also have a link to comment made by one Tony Wilkins, that a fellow named Ed stipulates is the GOP Media Chair for Guilford County.

Well, as we all know, everyone uses their real name on the internets and that everything we read on the internets is for real.

“....is for real.”

This blog-post is a joke, right.

Comment #5: Bagley  on  10/18  at  10:01 PM

Well, either the GOP media guy should be talking to the police or the police should be talking to him.

Comment #6: paul  on  10/18  at  11:02 PM

Hasn’t Bagley failed the stick test yet?

Comment #7: Jrod  on  10/18  at  11:03 PM

Personally, I think it’s interesting that “Bagley” has resurfaced just as “KLH” (did I get that right? I have to confess that I’d started reading it as “KLM” for some reason, though I did try pretty often to remind myself that this was a right wing troll and not the official airline of Germany) was banned…

Douchebagley, I know you don’t want to believe that your masters are fostering hate and violence, but it’s all there in black and white.

So why don’t you find a bag full of dogshit and chow down, hmm?

Interesting coincidence.  I attended the last mcsame/cariboubarbie rally here in PA as a member of the media (which, not coincidentally, I am).  I noticed one mcsame volunteer wearing a full (and I mean down to his bulging belly full) beard and a david allen coe t-shirt.  Said volunteer’s job was, apparently, to make sure no reporters could work the crowd coming into the facility for interviews.  And these reporters weren’t looking for Obama supporters, they wanted to talk to mcsame supporters and “undecideds” about the rally.  Nonetheless, our david allen coe did his job with relish apparently enjoying plucking members of the media out of the crowd and pushing them back in the press pen.  Which they promptly left because, guess what?  Members of the press are allowed to work the crowd.  Why he did this is beyond me.  I’m sure it’s some pent up, “I hate the media” thing but it was pointlessly pissing journalists.  Good job for a volunteer.

I got a few nice shots of him strutting up and down.  I’m sure the mcsame campaign was proud to have someone of his calibre and obvious racist beliefs wearing the badge of volunteer that day hence his appointment as official unofficial press “liaison”.

Ice weasel, was he yelling “Escape is Futile” while he was at it?

Comment #11: Ms Kate  on  10/18  at  11:51 PM

Opoponax - given the similar random hypenation, I’d say you have a good eye.

Do we get kittens?

Comment #12: mythago  on  10/18  at  11:51 PM

Bagley’s comment, if one wants to promote random typing to comment status, doesn’t even make <u>sense</u>.  Ten seconds of googling gives one all the info they need on the incident, some from Republican sources.  So, y’know, what the hell??

They’re just thrashing in their death-throes now.  Let’s keep up the pressure.  Reports of freeper aneurysms would be nice—and raise the collective IQ of humanity!  Win-Win!

Denial-Anger-Bargaining-Grief-Acceptance? Is that how it goes again?

The wingnuts seem to be stuck in Stage Two.

Comment #14: Ben D.  on  10/18  at  11:58 PM

Ben D.: It’s a combination.  Some are at 1, some at 2.

By the way, it’s Denial-Anger-Grief/Fear-Bargaining-Acceptance.  I predict none will get past 3.

Comment #15: Damian  on  10/19  at  12:52 AM

I’d like the lot of them to reach 4.

50 States, baby!  And your state legislatures too!

Comment #16: Eric, Rejector of Memez  on  10/19  at  12:55 AM

Anyone see Joe Biden’s response to Sarah Palin’s bullshit yesterday? He’s practically roaring by the end of it. Wish it were getting wider play.

Comment #17: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  10/19  at  01:04 AM

Man, Joe Biden is on FIRE in that clip!

Comment #18: Ben D.  on  10/19  at  01:12 AM

And yet I haven’t seen it anywhere since yesterday afternoon on CNN. Go figure.

Comment #19: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  10/19  at  01:16 AM

Biden might not get much attention now, but he will be an excellent Vice President in terms of governing.

Comment #20: Ben D.  on  10/19  at  01:29 AM

Hmm. I wonder if Bagley has a beard and a big belly.

Comment #21: Samantha Vimes  on  10/19  at  01:48 AM

I’m going to a counter demonstration of a “Traditional Family Values” parade in Salinas, California tomorrow. I have to admit that I’m a bit frightened of what these people could do to us. I’ll have my camera ready. Wish us luck!

Comment #22: Fritz  on  10/19  at  01:55 AM

I have to confess that I’d started reading it as “KLM” for some reason, though I did try pretty often to remind myself that this was a right wing troll and not the official airline of Germany

FYI, “Lufthansa” is German, “KLM” is Dutch.

BTW, Opoponax, love your posts.

Comment #23: Tyro  on  10/19  at  02:22 AM

Good luck, Fritz! If they get in your face, look pitying and tell them you’ll ask Jesus to forgive them. Say it with a straight face and maybe their heads will explode.

Comment #24: mythago  on  10/19  at  02:26 AM

Better yet Fritz, tell them in all repentant earnestness that God told you to be there, told you PERSONALLY to go forth and counter the modern Pharisees.

Good luck - I saw those Prop 8 ads while I was out west and oof the stupid burned!  Oh dear, my kid knows that men can marry men and women can marry women.  Now I’ll have to go on a lurid rant about buttfucking and cunnilingus and their innocence will be RUINED!  Dirty gays, its all their fault!

I think a Saudi family should sue to remove all depictions of women driving from the curriculum.  Oh, but that wouldn’t make any sense!

Comment #25: Ms Kate  on  10/19  at  11:09 AM

Duh, The Netherlands!

Oh, and yes, Mythago, kittens for everyone!

Comment #26: The Opoponax  on  10/19  at  11:14 AM

Denial-Anger-Bargaining-Grief-Acceptance? Is that how it goes again?

The wingnuts seem to be stuck in Stage Two.

Except for Bagley, who’s still on one.
