Nevada GOP throws in the convention towel

How sad is the state of the GOP in Nevada that its party cancels its own convention? So sad…NOT.

Citing a lack of interest, the Nevada Republican Party has called off its state convention and will instead pick its delegates to the national convention by private conference call.

The state party broke up its original convention in April when supporters of Ron Paul hijacked the proceedings and tried to elect delegates for their candidate to the national GOP convention in September. Party officials tried to reconvene on July 26, but they needed a quorum of 675 and received only 300 RSVPs, according to local reports.

“With so many people concerned about the economy, it simply wouldn’t be fair for us to ask delegates from all over the state to spend money to attend a convention if we know that a quorum won’t be present,” state party Chairwoman Sue Lowden said in a release.

Hey, your boys in DC are responsible for the sh*tty economy, ask them to pay the tab.

Not sure I am buying this.  If the Paul supporters nearly derailed things the first time, wouldn’t they also try to do so again?  Surely they could rustle up 600 odd people* (not even that much assuming non-Paul supporters also wanted to show up).  I wouldn’t be surprised if the convention was not widely known or not a lot of RSVPs were sent out.  Also, private conference call doesn’t smell of “smoke filled back room deals” tooooooooooooooooo much.

*No pun intended

That made me giggle.

I actually love the word “hijack” being used as a euphemism for “out-organized the establishment candidates and we can’t have that, can we?  Only those we approve of are allowed to game the system!”

As another native Nevadan and member of the Stonewall Democrats of Northern Nevada (www.sdnn.org), I’m counting on VERY, VERY sad. Nevada may be the first to lead many states turning from red to blue.

hahahahahaha!! Hilarious! And this means that the libertarian-fundy crisis gripping the GOP has come to a head in Nevada, with Ron Paul winning. It’s funny unless they win in November…

I think the media may be more than a little blind to the continuing support that Ron Paul has.  My wingnut neighbor—the one who had a Bush sign up all through 2004—has had a Paul sign up all year.  I think a lot of the fringes are not going to turn out for McCain even at the risk of having a Scary Negro as president instead.

I don’t know, it seems like Iowa, Colorado, and New Mexico are more likely to flip—Obama has led wire-to-wire in them, but frequently been behind in NV.  I certainly hope this convention thing is a harbringer of ugly things for the GOP in NV though.

Whiny wimps!  Guess they are just imagining that they don’t have enough cash to fill up the SUV and drive to Las Vegas while trying to make the payment on their upside-down mortage.  Free markets are a bitch!

::dances about strewing sage flowers:: So sad!

I guess the anti-Paul group who broke up the original convention had their supporters not RSVP so they could make the decision using their already held officer positions? That makes sense to me since they are the ones who gain out of this, which means its a defeat for the Paultards.

However, they did force the party to shut up shop, so heres to them keeping on trucking and alienating as many republicans as possible.
