New President, New Comments Policy

Pandagon

Heads up: due to the proliferation of name-stealing trolls, we’re now requiring that all commenters register in order to post.  It’s short, it’s quick, your e-mail is shared with absolutely nobody, and it also ensures that we have actual discussions rather than twenty-comment threads about some moron stealing your screen name.

------

Registration is now required! We're still in the process of getting it all squared away, so for the moment don't forget to Login or Register using the links in the upper left menu before starting to write your comment.

Posted by Jesse Taylor on 12:44 PM • (108) Comments

That was easy enough.

Comment #1: Ben D.  on  01/23  at  12:53 PM

OK, I had some problems at first, but it appears those of us who registered previously just need to sign-in under our names, right?

Comment #2: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  12:58 PM

I figured the length of my name was protecting me, but cool beans.

denelian—I now feel bad about not reporting the theft when I first saw it, but I figured people with brains would know it wasn’t you.  Plus, I knew you weren’t calling me names.

MAJeff has a strength of ignoring trolls I wish I could tap into.

Comment #3: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  01/23  at  12:59 PM

Yes, Biscuit God.  And if you use the same machine, you tend to stay signed in.

Comment #4: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  01/23  at  12:59 PM

Only slightly confusing. I thought that activating the account would also do an auto-login. No biggie. Definitely worth it to keep one type of troll activity to a minimum.

Comment #5: jpb  on  01/23  at  01:00 PM

I can’t figure out how to register! Oh wait…

Comment #6: Andrew  on  01/23  at  01:05 PM

I think this step was necessary. Even the almost-unmoderated sadlyno.com is starting to have serious issues with annoyingly persistent trolls (mostly, one in particular) who just won’t go away. At least the process is quite easy.

Comment #7: atheist  on  01/23  at  01:08 PM

Easy-peasy, and a good idea.

Comment #8: Rumblelizard  on  01/23  at  01:12 PM

You might want to make the login link at the left a little more prominent.

Comment #9: Comrade Mary  on  01/23  at  01:21 PM

Ok, there!  Secret handshake complete.

Comment #10: elmo  on  01/23  at  01:22 PM

You need to have the login/register buttons underneath the text-entry comments box.

Comment #11: Jesurgislac  on  01/23  at  01:22 PM

Troll psychology I just don’t understand.  Part of it is that conservatism is a negative political stance—-mostly about hating this group or that, and hating liberals is their “argument”.  Which means that many think actually using their presence to shut down liberal discussion forums is a legitimate form of expression.  I just don’t see it going much the other way, though part of that is few conservative blogs have comments.

Comment #12: Amanda Marcotte  on  01/23  at  01:23 PM

How long you figure before Amanda, Jesse, or Pam gets an email saying “you have no right to ban me for <strike>speaking the truth</strike> making incredibly bigoted statements with no grounding in reality! I REGISTERED!1\!!1”

Comment #13: Andrew  on  01/23  at  01:25 PM

For some reason, it wouldn’t allow me to register under my usual screen name - probably because I had registered before - but it also wouldn’t permit me to sign in as TDA because there’s no such name in the database. So now I’m TDA v 1.1 - same as the original, but with fewer bugs.

Comment #14: Nil  on  01/23  at  01:30 PM

You need to have the login/register buttons underneath the text-entry comments box.

Also, this is now the third time I’ve tried to make this comment. First time, got turned back because it was 15 seconds since the last time; second time, got turned back for no explained reason; third time’s the charm, eh?

Comment #15: Jesurgislac  on  01/23  at  01:31 PM

To some of my anarchist comrades: this is why consensus works (sometimes) in affinity groups but is not a realistic way to make decisions in the real world. You just need one jackass…

I wonder if I should finally register over at the Great Orange Satan and Feministing…

Comment #22: shah8  on  01/23  at  01:43 PM

Which means that many think actually using their presence to shut down liberal discussion forums is a legitimate form of expression.  I just don’t see it going much the other way, though part of that is few conservative blogs have comments.

Given how most of the trolls tend to degenerate into misogyny, racism, and homophobia and how personal their attacks get it strikes me that they think that hurting liberals is legitimate expression, in the way that the pro-lifer who drove their car into a women’s health clinic this week thought that was legitimate expression.

Comment #23: pennylane  on  01/23  at  01:49 PM

Easy enough. Poor psychopath trolls, though—what will DodgeRamMeUpTheArse (come on, it’s so obvious he’s a closet case) do to get attention from now on?

Comment #24: Gracchus.  on  01/23  at  01:50 PM

I haven’t been able to register at Feministing—and they don’t respond to emails. :(

ice weasel—Amanda et al have had my email address for a few years now from non-registered posting and there isn’t any reason to believe they’re “building an email list.”

However, Pandagon overlords, it might be a good idea to whip up a quick “privacy policy” for the site stating that personal information will not be bought/sold/traded when people register. All the cool sites are doing it.

Comment #25: Mighty Ponygirl  on  01/23  at  01:52 PM

In the abortion/misogyny thread below, the troll stole my name and told someone to get in the kitchen and bake cookies.  Anyone who knows me knows that I would bake my own cookies.  However, in the spirit of killing DogShit, I’m gonna give y’all my favorite cookie recipe.  This one’s from my great aunt.  I dunno where she got it, but my family has been using it—from a cookbook published by their church—for decades. (I usually make them for my students during finals week)

Enjoy!

1 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
3 cups oatmeal
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (I add more to replace the walnuts)
1 tsp vanilla extract (go for Penzey’s double-strength…AMAZING STUFF)

Preheat oven to 350
Cream together the shortening, sugars, and eggs.
In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, soda, powder, and salt.
Mix the bowls together with the remaining ingredients.
Place slightly flattened 1-TBSP-sized cookies on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. (you’ll want to wet your hands first—sticky dough)
Bake for 10-15 minutes (12 usually works for me)

Comment #26: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  01/23  at  01:52 PM

This isn’t fair. How am I supposed to call the writers of this blog gay and imply that I’m having sex with their mothers now? Trolls have rights too, you know. What happened to you, man? You used to be cool.

Comment #33: Cris  on  01/23  at  02:25 PM

Ummm, 55+5 != 61. Make that 56 Democrats. (Kennedy did not vote, NY and MN currently have only one Senator.)

They also make a killer Vindaloo spice mix.  It makes a great rub on pork or chicken. Do that up with a little chutney, and rice or dhal and you’ve got an amazing meal.

Burris just started his 2 years as a seat warmer in a good way.

It is a good thing, though to be truthful he would have been a royal asshole not too, and I don’t think it would have made him many friends among his Democratic colleagues - the Senate Dems voted unanimously in favor.

The 5 Republicans who crossed over?

Every female GOP Senator (Markowski, Hutchison, Snowe, Collins) + Arlen Specter.

Props to Specter for doing the right (albeit probably expedient) thing, but can there be no doubt as to why the GOP is generally viewed as a bunch of misogynistic good ol’ boys when 31 out of 32 male GOP Senators voted to support gender-based discrimination?

Comment #54: DTG in STL  on  01/23  at  03:34 PM

I’ve got a loaf of bread rising right now.

Ooooh, MAJeff!  Your kitchen smells so good right now.

My grandfather used to make sourdough bread.  It was the coolest thing to come home from school and have warm bread waiting for me.  He also made sourdough pancakes (that were so thin and light the closest thing I’ve ever found are Swedish pancakes) for breakfast everyday.  He was the one who began creating the pancakes in the first place.

Mmmmm.  Miss him lots.  Mine are good, or so I’m told, but it’s just not the same.

Comment #55: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  01/23  at  03:37 PM

Those cookies look pretty good, MAJeff.  Too bad I have to make banana bread today (bananas won’t last much longer) and I can’t have too many sweets laying around the house tempting me.  Can I substitute butter for the shortening?  Because I just like butter better.

Comment #56: ks  on  01/23  at  03:59 PM

Nifty!

And I bet those cookies are good. There’s a pretty similar recipe in the Joy of Cooking that uses butter instead of shortening and goes lighter on the oatmeal and walnuts. Mmm, oatmeal and walnuts…

I dunno.  I haven’t played around with substituting fats, but Crisco does make a butter-flavored shortening, though. The only reason I even have shortening in the house is for the few times a year when I bake the cookies.

I’ve have substituted and used mint chocolate chips during the christmas season, and now I tend to use combos of white chocolate chips with semi-sweet.

OH MAJEFF!  You just made me shout out loud.

I’d just been over at Think Progress, where apparently the Minority Whip is running around telling boldfaced lies—i.e., claiming that more money will be spent on (lawn) grass at the National Mall than on small businesses and doesn’t even mention the cuts in taxes to small businesses.

Then we have the Steve King claiming that a liberal judge might throw out Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s case on a technicality—like not being read his Miranda rights (which the SCOTUS already threw out)—and then another judge might decide he should get political asylum then POW 9/11 MasterMind is on the path to US citizenship!

Then we have Senate Minority Leader flipping out on Employee Free Choice Act.

I’m all bummed at the outrageous lies and obstruction we will have for the next 2-4 years, and that the fight for the truth and for journalists to do even the most basic of follow up hasn’t ended at all, but then I see the gag rule is gone!

At last! Thank God Almighty free at last!

One good thing about YouTube comments… they are a good place to pick up particularly funny bits of stupidity. Schroedinger’s Commenter is alive.

I think this is a good thing, the trolls were really making a mess.
And I use a nom du net.

Oh, and no artificial butter flavor shortenings in my cookies, please.
Artificial butter flavor is a chemical that damages the lungs of the workers in the food factories over time.  I wouldn’t want it on my conscience.

But real butter works fine in cookies; there is a difference in textures, but not everyone prefers the same texture, anyway.

I’ve registered under my name, sans food-aristocrat sobriquet, on accounta so few people still use theirs.  I’ve seen another “Josh” entering discussions here every now and then, and indeed engaging the conversation more substantially than I do:  I hope he’s okay with having to add to his name.

Well, I use a nom du aviation.

Ouch.  Sorry.  I’ll go now. smile

Phoenician: ‘twas Hershele Ostropoler who referred to his pseudonym as a “non de guerre,” rather than a “nom de plume.”

So many nyms I’ve lost track of them all. (Truly. Sometimes I go to “show passwords” on firefox just so I can figure out who the hell I am.)

It’s going to be interesting to see how the ground game goes on the stimulus bill—“Talk to your neghbors about the following local services that your representative wants to shut down…”

Just testing my own login here.

I’ve been tied up with work for the last four days, but want to applaud this, as it will also eliminate the duplicate “James” poster who seems to be a troll.

I am not a troll.

Nom de guerre” being the correct term, per Fowler.

Ahem. the WordPress account that shows up as Hershele is an admin on my blog, so I can stay signed in for everything but actually posting and still kvetch at people on Feminism101.

Done.
