Newt Gingrich: angry gays promoting secular fascism

LGBTRepublicans

As you can see, the meme of the violent gays is out there, and Newt Gingrich and Co. are more than happy to stir the pot. He’s the last person who needs to talk about protecting marriage.

From the November 14 edition of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor:

O’REILLY: OK, now, the culture war. I know you’ve been flying around the country, and you’re doing stuff. In the last three or four days, this is really nasty stuff. I mean, you know, hyper—we’re gonna show you some of the video. A woman getting a cross smashed out of her hand. We had a church in Michigan invaded by gay activists. We’re gonna show you the video on Monday of that—we have exclusively. We had a guy in Sacramento fired from his job. We had boycotts called on restaurants.

I mean, it is getting out of control, very few days after the election. How do you assess that?

GINGRICH: Look, I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion. And I think if you believe in historic Christianity, you have to confront the fact. And, frank—for that matter, if you believe in the historic version of Islam or the historic version of Judaism, you have to confront the reality that these secular extremists are determined to impose on you acceptance of a series of values that are antithetical, they’re the opposite, of what you’re taught in Sunday school.

I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment.

Replace “gay and secular” with “Christian” and see how much FUN you have!

Comment #1: Lindsay  on  11/18  at  02:22 PM

They are lying.  It’s fucking obvious that they are lying.  2008 proved that the electorate is made up of enough educated people that you can’t win an election just by lying through your teeth for three months.  Let Gingrich rant about gay fascists and when Rachael Maddow gets a hold of the issue she’ll tear it to shreds.  This is another political loser for the GOP.

If anything, we’ll get to highlight the disparity between what they are saying and what the reality on the ground is.  The Nazis didn’t parade through the German capital to win marriage rights.  Gays aren’t “policing” the neighborhood in nice brown shirts and throwing people in internment camps.

If Gingrich wants to make an analogy, he’ll have better luck comparing the Rainbow Coalition to the Black Panthers, and I’ll happily sit back and watch how far that gets him.  There are certain stereotypes and presumptions about gay people.  They’re effeminate.  They’re weak.  They’re cloistered and elitist.  They are not gun-totting, violent extremists.  Flip on a prime time soap opera like Brothers & Sisters or Boston Legal.  Do the TV gays strike you as the militant radical extremist variety?  Turn on your cable news.  The flamingly gay fashion reporter?  The tie-died San Fransisco hippie guy on the street?  Do these strike you as Hitler material?

Give me a freak’n break.

Sometimes I want to go all Ann Coulter and say:  “Fascism?  You call that Fascism?  Let’s show them some real fascism!”  Then I realize that we secular types really don’t have the power to implement fascism, even if we wanted to.

In any case, the tendency of the Right to project its own fantasies onto us is so obvious that it’s scarcely worthy of comment.

Comment #3: Captain Bathrobe  on  11/18  at  02:28 PM

Well, Newtie, there isn’t an actual “gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment”, but there sure is a Republican and Religious Fascism that has been imposing its will on the rest of us and has used violence and harassment to achieve its goals.

We just threw the Head Fascist and his good buddy George out on their asses.  Maybe we can do the same for you, you despicable worm of a man…

Comment #4: MikeEss  on  11/18  at  02:29 PM

If a bogus ‘80s-vintage “culture war” narrative is all they have left, guys like O’Falafel and Gingrich must be feeling pretty desperate these days.

On the same note, the American Family Association is now selling this lovely Christmas ornament—the perfect replacement for your neighbour’s Obama lawn sign.

At least American conservatives are finally ending the flimsy charade that they’re not appealing to irrational and frightened bigotry.

Comment #5: Gracchus  on  11/18  at  02:34 PM

He is absolutely correct.  I, for one, want to force Newt Gingrich to marry Bill O’Reilly.  I am prepared to use harassment in order to make this a reality.

Comment #6: Jake Squid  on  11/18  at  02:34 PM

Apparently the series of values that I learned in Sunday School and the one’s Newt learned were completely different.

Oh right, he learned HISTORIC Christianity. The kind that thought slavery was AOK, subjugated women, and forbid poly-cotton blends. He seems to have missed the part that says “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Something that may make you lulz.

Comment #8: Zifnab25  on  11/18  at  02:40 PM

Good ol’ Newt, always good for inflammatory rhetoric—now gay secularists = radical islamists?  Whew!  It is a rhetoric that will resonate with some, but those folk are irredeemable anyway.

IIRC Garry Trudeau always depicted Newt as the bomb with the burning fuse in “Doonesbury”.

Comment #9: MiddleageLiberal  on  11/18  at  02:44 PM

Wait, Newt’s defending traditional Islam now?  OMG NEWT IS ADVOCATING ISLAMIC EXTREMISM FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

In other news, the Gingrich family Thanksgiving will take place at an Atlanta, GA area Perkins’ Restaurant.  It will last for about fifteen minutes until the manager asks them all to leave because they are disturbing other customers.

Comment #10: Maureen  on  11/18  at  03:01 PM

You gotta love how these nuts so casually, and carelessly throw words around, like “fascism.” I wonder if they really know what the word means. If they did, they wouldn’t use it, other than to falsely vilify a person or group of people, beating the drums of hate and divisiveness.

I’d like to know where O’Reilly and Newt have been for the last 30 years, as an extreme, right-wing, authoritarian, intolerant (aka fascist) mass of people in this country, known as the religious right, have tried (with some success) to “impose its will on the rest of us,” some times with violence and harassment. How many gay men and women have been verbally harassed, beaten up, and in some cases killed by the real fascist nut-jobs out there?

What we’re witnessing currently does not compare!

Guys like O’Reilly and Newt disgust me.

Given how divided we seem to be on issues like this, maybe it’s time we split up the country into 2!

Comment #11: WATCH US EXPLODE!  on  11/18  at  03:12 PM

“I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it.”

ZOMG! You mean that a group of people committed to an at-the-time unpopular idea can advance their views for decades until the point where enough people and their representatives in government can create laws that reflect those ideas?

Thank the LORD that has never happened and never will.

Jebus, every time I start thinking that Newt is a wrong-headed but basically intelligent guy, he sets me straight.

Oh come ON, Lindsay.

Everyone knows that the First Amendment gives Christians the right of Freedom of Speech Without Reprisals!  Only people unfairly—and with disrespect!—responding to that proper use of the First Amendment can be said to be harassing anyone.

Sheesh! rolleyes

“Love thy neighbor as thyself”

When it comes down to it, I’ll bet a lot of those fundies secretly hate themselves, so their treatment of everyone outside of their head oddly fits.

Comment #14: Lindsay  on  11/18  at  04:05 PM

...We had boycotts called on restaurants.

OH DEAR GOD NOT THE BOYCOTTS!!! “First they boycotted the Jews…” (I’m sorry, did I just Godwin the thread? O’Reilly made me do it.)

Comment #15: Bagelsan  on  11/18  at  04:14 PM

Actually, I guess the whole initial premise Godwin-ed the thread. Apology withdrawn…

Comment #16: Bagelsan  on  11/18  at  04:15 PM

gracchus—that season lawn kitsch. wow. looks like it’s on fire and everything. how appropriate for the target demographic.

Elise: Yep. I daresay the most rabidly atheistic Pandagonians are better Christians than most self-identified Christians, in terms of putting Christ’s actual ethical teachings into action.

Comment #17: wapsie  on  11/18  at  04:16 PM

Zifnab -

That’s brilliant.  Someone please make a post about that so we can discuss it at length.

Comment #18: Seraph  on  11/18  at  04:18 PM

Does anyone besides me literally laugh at loud at the very thought of the phrase “Gay Fascism”?

Comment #19: Ben D.  on  11/18  at  04:37 PM

“Does anyone besides me literally laugh at loud at the very thought of the phrase “Gay Fascism”?”

That idiot Jonah Goldberg wrote a book with the title Liberal Fascism, which is such a stupid and self-contradictory title it sounds like it should have come from The Onion.  But some people took it seriously…

Comment #20: MikeEss  on  11/18  at  04:46 PM

But the phrase Liberal Fascism is just stupid. “Gay Fascism” sounds…unbelievably hilarious. It is beyond parody.

Comment #21: Ben D.  on  11/18  at  04:47 PM

Oh noes! Harassment! People will be sending strongly worded notes! How can Gingrich possibly stand up to such an assault?

Comment #22: paul  on  11/18  at  04:48 PM

Newt Gingrich is still relevant?  Come again?

Comment #23: Em  on  11/18  at  04:57 PM

Does anyone besides me literally laugh at loud at the very thought of the phrase “Gay Fascism”?

Historically, there was a close relationship between fascism and homoeroticism (if not outright homosexuality, as was the case in Ernst Rohm’s SA boy’s club). I’m sure Prof. Gingrich knows about that version, but with a Know-Nothing audience it’s more expedient to promote visions of Harvey Feirstein and Rupaul and the “Queer Eye” guys plotting to take over the country and pollute our precious bodily fluids.

For my money, the funniest gay fascists were Bob and Cedric from Seinfeld. “Who? Who doesn’t want to wear the ribbon?!” If they want to scare their mouth-breathing audience, Gingrich or O’Falafel ought to hire that pair.

Good point about the former. It is the latter version that is lol-worthy.

Comment #25: Ben D.  on  11/18  at  05:13 PM

The homoerotic overtones have been mentioned.

“See the nice boys, dancing in pairs
Golden earring golden tan, blow-wave in their hair
Sure they’re all straight, straight as a line
All the gays are macho. Can’t you see the leather shine?

You don’t want to sound dumb, don’t want to offend.
So don’t call me a faggot, not unless you are a friend.
Then if you’re tall and handsome and strong
You can wear the uniform and I could play along…”

Comment #26: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/18  at  07:00 PM

The uniforms will be FAB-U-LOUS!

Comment #27: pablo  on  11/18  at  07:16 PM

Maybe they meant to say “Gay Fabulism”... Newt and Bill would make some couple, no?

Comment #28: Big Bad Bald Bastard  on  11/18  at  07:43 PM

“Les boys got leather straps
Les boys got SS caps…”

Comment #29: Rebecca  on  11/18  at  08:42 PM

Jake Squid: the idea of Gingrich and O’Reilley marrying could lead to the idea of them kissing and…other stuff. That is a singularly unpleasant image to have in one’s head.
I wonder how Newt’s lesbian sister feels about being likened to a fascist?

Comment #30: Bill S  on  11/18  at  09:07 PM

Well the idea of a fey, tie-dyed clad Hitler does sound right—for Springtime For Hitler.

But can I just say I love the cluelessness involved in asking people who follow traditional Judaism or traditional Islam to think about what they learned in Sunday School? I think he was kind of switching who he was speaking to there, but he didn’t clearly transition.

Comment #31: Samantha Vimes  on  11/18  at  11:45 PM

asking people who follow traditional Judaism or traditional Islam to think about what they learned in Sunday School?

That they were all going to Hell, presumably. But in the face of TEH GIGGLY GAY GAYZ Newt presumes they will grin and bear it as just one of God’s little quirks.

Comment #32: sunsin  on  11/19  at  03:33 AM

Did someone mention “Springtime for Hitler”? The new one had the fabulous John Barrowman (with dyed blond hair) being the main singer… and oh, is Hitler flaming in this!
