Numbers Time!

38% of Americans don’t think or know if Obama was born in America, and 39% want government out of Medicare.

40% have a positive view of Sarah Palin

It’s not so much that I’m implying that 40% of our nation should be restricted to the use of safety scissors and kept out of movies with loud explosions as much as I am drafting the Constitutional amendment to do that as we speak.

50% of Americans are below average intelligence, so it figures.

To be fair, if I’d gotten this poll, I probably would have hung up when I got to the Medicare question (#3).

Q3 Do you think the government should stay out of Medicare? If yes, press 1. If no, press 2. If you’re not sure, press 3.
Yes ................................................................. 39%
No…................................................................ 46%
Not Sure…....................................................... 15%

It’s a bullshit question.  The people you’re going to get completing the poll are most likely either predisposed to not thinking it’s a bullshit question—I don’t even want to think about how many of the Nos and Not Sures might think that Medicare is just as in need of government intervention as Humana and BCBS—or people with the patience to put up with it.

Wow, those are some high numbers. I was expecting the usual 25% of Know-Nothing morons, with maybe another 5% of low-info/no-info voters.

The American public education system and the MSM come through again! /headdesk

Perhaps 40% of our population should be sent into a field to play with scissors and loud explosives?  Let’s get those death panels started!

As H. L. Menken observed, no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

I agree with preying mantis.  The questions probably skewed the respondents.  Most other surveys show only about 25% wingnuts.

The 23%ers are now the 40%ers?  Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Remember that book, “The Dumbing Down of America?”

The seeds were sown and the crop is in.

That survey question reminds me of a phone poll I got during the height of the ‘if we don’t restrict freedom the terrorists will win’ craze; “Do you think the (conservative) Howard government is doing enough about terorrism?” Yes/No. I paused, and obviously wasn’t the only one, because the pollster sighed, and said ‘I know.’

I love the people who are convinced that Obama was born in France.  I can’t figure out if it’s a joke answer or if some people really believe that.

And I’m upset that apparently no one’s answer was “Krypton.”

40% of Americans are goddamn idiots. This is really old news isn’t it?

Comment #11: Mark  on  08/20  at  02:33 PM

Back in early 2001, I picked up a call from a Republican pollster (calling my father, a registered Republican, just to be clear).  He decided to poll me and the questions were very similar to what Stephen Colbert asks:  George W. Bush, great president or greatest president?  At that time (May 2001), my partisan distaste for Bush was kind of beside the point; he’d spent his entire term thus far on vacation, so I gave the pollster the most negative responses possible.  The shock in the guy’s voice was very amusing.

My guess is that it’s half a joke: i.e., for all they care, Obama was born in France.

In other words, 40% of Americans are victims of self-inflicted power drill lobotomies from trying to release the demons (e.g. forbidden thoughts of gay sex) from their wicked minds.

If I were asked whether the government should “stay out of Medicare,” I’d interpret it as a question as to whether the government should change Medicare, much as the gov’t tried to change Soc Security four years back.

It is a lousy question, but the fact that the numbers track so closely to the Palin numbers…
