Next entry: MP3s, free markets, and mixed economies Previous entry: Michael Gerson: No Longer Putting The Square Peg In The Round Hole

O Brother, Where Art Thou?  And When Art Thou Bringing The Pizza?

When the President-Elect of the United States publicly declaring he’s a devout Christian makes your list of the Top 10 “Christian Bashers” of 2008, you’re probably not nearly as victimized as you think you are.

For instance, did you know that a Christian minister in Michigan was imprisoned for writing an article about how God would punish the judge presiding over his case?  Of course not, because the ACLU is involved.  But no, certainly an ESPN anchor saying “Fuck Jesus” is more damaging to Christians nationwide than Christians being imprisoned for opining on God’s will.  It’s really sad they edited out the Gospel of Stuart Scott, wherein Jesus converts rogue sports anchor Jepthoah Blakeman after scoring nine points on a single drive in Madden 28 AD.  It was moving.

(By the way, how often has WND covered the above-mentioned case?  Never.)

“Group compiles astonishing examples of American intolerance toward believers “

“It is time for the Christian bashing to stop and for Christians to no longer be treated like second-class citizens,” Cass said. “Anti-Christian bigotry is real and growing. Those who engage in it should be exposed and called to account.”

Oh, waah.  Seriously, do these people give a second (or first) thought to doing any of the things on their list to Jews, Muslims, or the insidious atheist?

Being told to get over yourself isn’t bigotry, for as much as they’re desperate for anything to justify their cute little persecution complex.

According to research into President-elect Obama’s own statements about faith, and an examination of Obama’s position on moral issues, CADC has determined that by any biblical and historic Christian standard, Barack Obama is not a Christian, although he claims he is a “devout Christian.”

According to research into the basic tenets of Protestantism… aw, to hell with it. If they haven’t groked the priesthood of all believers by now they never will. Elect a pope already you ignorant bastards.

And while I agree that Edward Pinkney is wrongfully imprisoned, that doesn’t change the simple fact that he’s a deranged fucknut.

“And while I agree that Edward Pinkney is wrongfully imprisoned, that doesn’t change the simple fact that he’s a deranged fucknut.”

And I haven’t seen anything to suggests he’s not guilty of the election fraud charge he was on probation for when he made his Biblical pronouncement. I have seen at least one conservative blog post on this, using the standard conservative frame. I posted that my ACLU $s being put to good work.

That said, I realize probationers are basically agreeing to give up many of their civil rights in exchange for not being in prison, but I don’t believe judges should have the option of imposing any conditions that restricts freedom of speech.

Comment #3: witless chum  on  01/07  at  01:56 PM

OMG! Wingnut Daily really outdid themselves with that one. Bill Mahr must be fist pumping for all the hate he’s getting.
PZ Myers desecrating a host? Let’s see when a semi-famous blogger tosses out a host/cracker (or whatever he actually did) as a fuck-you to religion, that isn’t even close to persecution. Persecution involves people, or property (as in vandalizing buildings), not an act that threatens no one. Like burning a flag, it’s a calculated insult but definitely not threatening anyone.
And insulting Sarah Palin? Are you kidding me? She’s running for office, putting her faith on her forehead (forget her sleeve), making it a major qualification, so it’s pretty much fair game.

Sorry, wingnuts. You’re not being persecuted when you’re the MAJORITY. Idiots.

They did research? And an examination?

Well, that settles it for me!

As for Pickney, deranged or not, I don’t see a whole lot of difference between what he wrote and the ministers, bishops, etc. who are incessantly telling politicians and judges they’re going to hell. I guess the point is, threatening someone with eternal torment is OK, but stay away from threats here on Earth.

Comment #7: Bitter Scribe  on  01/07  at  02:26 PM

I love this line: “CADC has determined that by any biblical and historic Christian standard, Barack Obama is not a Christian”

Who the fuck do they think they are?  They aren’t speaking for all Christians by a long shot.  Are they still hoping to smear him with his Kenyanlicious Muslimity?

And you have to laugh at #5, when they claim that they are being discriminated against b/c they can’t discriminate against non-Christians anymore.  Oh noes!  We have to respect the First Amendment for EVERYONE?  How can that be fair?

Losers!  Barack is still the POTUS-elect.  The Constitution will still be enforced.  Ha ha.  You aren’t moral or a majority, despite owning Pravda and the airwaves.

That is a great one. It actually means, “We HATE Barack SOOOOOO MUCH!!! But we can’t think of anything specific to get him on the list.” That is pathetic. The threshold is so low with these guys that a cartoon of Sarah Palin gibbering is the second biggest Christian bashing event of the year! (Tina Fey has to be disappointed.)
And who the hell is the CADC to make that determination anyway? Judge not, and all that…

Comment #9: histrogeek  on  01/07  at  02:51 PM

“CADC has determined that by any biblical and historic Christian standard, Barack Obama is not a Christian”

Ah, it finally clicked. CADC is so radically out there, that by their “biblical and historic Christian standard” they (True Christians (TM)) really are a very, very tiny minority in the country, and hence in no way a privileged class. Or sumthin. You know, even the Constitution won’t let them “exercise their Religion” to stone the gays and the adulterers.

But a person *was* involved.  Remember, the communion wafer, once blessed, is the *literal* body of Christ.

Personally, I’d like to have some private citizen charge Myers with desecrating a body.  I’d love to be able to point at some official court ruling which said “are you fucking kidding me?!?”

God, basically. That’s who supposed to have the power and right to determine who is and who is not a Christian, not humans.

Actually, I can get behind that.  Threatening someone with Hell, unless combined with other threats, amounts to “You better watch out or <strike>my big brother</strike> God is gonna beat you up!”  There’s a chance that someone might actually act on threats here on Earth.

Ummm, I’m an atheist, but I’m also reasonably sure that the Bible is pretty explicit about thinking you can judge who is really a Christian being a bad idea.

Exactly. Insofar as fundagelicals believe in any god at all (which isn’t very far, from what I can tell), they’ve taped a photo of their own faces over his body.

Does prohibiting a parolee from hexing public officials really infringe on free speech, though?  It seems like you could make a pretty good case for it being the bastard offspring of a public nuisance and an attempt to subvert the criminal justice system.

“Let’s see when a semi-famous blogger tosses out a host/cracker (or whatever he actually did)”
He stuck a nail through it and tossed it in the garbage, iirc. He got a shitload of hate mail for months afterwards (a lot of threats, too. So much for Christian love, am I right?), I think he still gets some occasionally…

Then there’s this one:

INSTANCE #4: Colorado Law Criminalizes the Bible

SB200, a Colorado state bill recently signed into law, criminalizes the Bible. Section 8 of the bill entitled “Publishing of discriminative matter forbidden” makes publishing the Bible illegal because it contains anti-homosexual passages. This is part of a larger effort to criminalize the expression of certain opinions and beliefs.

Whoever wrote this paragraph has obviously never read Section 8 of the law in question, and decided that making shit up would be just be easier. Section 8 is very specific and one would be hard pressed to imagine a situation in which it could be applied to the bible. The section was intended to address publications put out by a ‘place of public accommodation, resort, or amusement’ which state that a long list of categories of people, including gay people are not permitted or welcome at the establishment in question. So in other words a ‘fags need not bother patronizing this establishment’ kind of thing is what is specifically being outlawed.

Clearly they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel to find examples of how they’re ‘persecuted.

Or, as Anne Lamott put it, “You know you’ve made God in your own image when it turns out that He hates all of the same people you do.”

Comment #22: Mnemosyne  on  01/07  at  06:59 PM

Bah! What a bunch of whiny sphincters these people are. Persecution!

I’ve taken a fairly hard line in defense of free speech in the form of my website and videos, all of which are pretty controversial. I’ve been subject to death threats and to having service providers deny me privileges that other people can freely access. I’ve been denied employment at least once over what occurred when an HR person googled my name.

And besides those weightier things, I get called a dumbass on a fairly regular basis.

These things are not – I repeat, not – persecution. Being wrongfully imprisoned or/and tortured is persecution. Being mutilated and maimed (for example, by acid-throwers or gay bashers) for your beliefs, gender, or orientation – these things are persecution.

Being called names, facing criticism, having to argue with service providers over what does and does not constitute a “terms of service” violation – these things are not persecution. They’re the price of admission to the great debate.

Many people here have fought for, and won, the right to express themselves in the marketplace of ideas. These martyr-morons can either do the same or shut the fuck up.

Waitiaminnit—Charles Grassley?  The Christians are allying themselves with Big Pharma and Bloated University Administrations in opposing Grassley’s anti-corruption work on the Finance Committee? Bwahaha.

Comment #24: Josh  on  01/07  at  07:27 PM

This holiday season I went and bought an old hymnal for nostalgia (1940 episcopal, I don’t not-believe in any of that newfangled crap, thank you) and was struck by how thoroughly the standard beliefs are rooted in victimology. Christians are by definition persecuted people, because that’s how they get to be like jesus. Doesn’t matter how much wealth and power they accumulated, they are persecuted. Claiming otherwise is like claiming that water isn’t wet; it simply doesn’t make any sense to them.

Comment #25: paul  on  01/07  at  07:33 PM

I don’t know about that. The modern tendency toward victimhood among fundies has less to do with “being like Jesus” than with an attempt to punk progressives by co-opting evocative terms usually reserved for struggling minorities. They do this to maintain their own ascendency, and to take legitimacy away from the truly mistreated groups that appeal to fairness and equality as grounds for legal protection.

Yes and no. You’re correct that that’s what’s really going on at a political level. But the people in the pews believe it, and the story works because hardly anyone is a True Christian like us. Thousands and thousands of fundagelical bible-believing baptist pentecostal nondenominational churches all over the landscape, each one telling its members that the world is about to end, and they are the elect few. And if your neighbor doesn’t take bible study as seriously as you do, it’s just proof that 95% of Americans are homobortionist secular liberals who recently introduced a bill to ban prayer in homeschools.

Comment #31: asdf  on  01/08  at  12:02 AM

How does one become a homobortionist, anyway?  Do you have to have gay sex while performing an abortion?  ‘Cause that kinda raises the bar…

Christisn sre being persecuted?
they have no IDEA
The followig are persecution.
*your children removed from you home by Child Protective services becaude a nosy fundy neighbor founf out that you are a practising Wiccan. and so is your husband. and CPS had their daughter in foster homes for over a year - because pagans teach their children to worship the devil (i hae never met a pagan who even BELIEVED in the devil, let alone WORSHIPPED It)
*an entire fundy church devoting a month to “your houshold” this means two things. one, that twice a day (morning and evening) a huge chunk of this churh would arive on our front steps and “pray for us” LOUDLY. they filled teh lawn and into the street. twice a day. for a month. amd second, that they had rotating missionaries, who would rotate in groups of three and AT LEAST once a day invade our home and “witness to us”. they also vandalized our house more than once with stckers and graphity that said stuff like “this house has been blessed”. and it seems the cops felt aREMOVING THEM FROM OUR PRIVATE PROPERTY WAS A VIOLATION OF THEIR 1ST AMENDMENT RIGHTS - even tresspassomg, and, what about *OUR* 1sr amendment rights>
*having man sized teenage boys in hockey masks CLIMB OUR 8 FOOT privacy wall, break up our Beltain ritual, attack the participants with what i think are baseball bats, attempt to rape TWO of the participants… and get off scott free as they were “only protecting THEIR right persecute witches”. ok, thats not how the verdict actually read, but it was te effect.
full dislosure - i was in the middle of both the second and third - a resident of the house in the second, so i got about the same “wittnessing” as everyone else, and third? my sisters yard (talk privavacy fene) somewhere around 8 of themwere onloy 13 of us, i was busy being High Priestest for the ceremony so they didn’t attavk *me* at first (i think because i was nakid. i think that is also why they attacked the guys at all, instead of jst threats as they later told police they were going to do - the sight of nekkid men for a religious ceremony that worships a FEMALE GOD? ARGH! and there you hsbr it - 5 concussions, 8 or 9 broken ribs, 3 broken arms and also that cracked clavical…
