No matter what else he said tonight, I will say that Afghanistan is NOT Vietnam. Just drop that comparison, it’s so stupid on so many levels. For one thing, we don’t have a draft like we did in Vietnam! We weren’t attacked from Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh actually had good intentions, and was a nationalist leader supported my most of Vietnam—unlike the Taliban. Etc. Leftists who make every war “Vietnam (tm)” are as bad as wingnuts who make every tinpot dictator “The Next Hitler (tm)”.

The Taliban must have some popular support to be doing as well as they are. The idea that they aren’t popular at least among Pashtuns seems like wishful thinking.
I was impressed, again, by how well Obama does this and I’m firmly in the F him for not being Denny Kucinich camp.
Obama’s locution of ‘violent extremism’ is better than ‘war on terror’ but it’s still bad. It’s still a way to conflate the guys who attacked us on Sept. 11 with a lot guys who didn’t, but at least it doesn’t include an insane response to that in its very name.
Also, Vietnam was in the jungle, and Afghanistan is mostly desert.
While the two are clearly not identical, there are certain parallels. Still, if you really want, we can compare it to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan instead.
