Pat Robertson: Haiti ‘asked for it’ by making a pact with the Devil

How can a “man of God” be so evil. There’s no other word for it. We can laugh at his multiple blathering of batsh*ttery, but when he steps into the role of God’s Executioner, I cannot think of anything more Satanic than Pat Robertson. (via Political Carnival):

Of course you are, Pat… after you come out with outlandishly despicable statements about why Haiti has had to deal with so much death, so many troubles. See, according to Televangelist Pat it’s because they “swore a pact at the Devil” in order to free themselves from the French. “True story. So the devil said ‘okay, it’s a deal’”. That’s why this horrific earthquake took place. Haiti asked for it. Did you know that? Apparently this Pat Robertson does.

Pat says that medicine and food from his organization are on the way. Presumably his people will also be proselytizing to survivors that they need to turn from Satan as they are given rice, beans and bread, and medicine.

UPDATE: People For the American Way President Michael B. Keegan today condemned the statement made by Pat Robertson

Michael B. Keegan, president of People For the American Way, issued the following statement:

“Pat Robertson’s comments about the victims of this earthquake are reprehensible. Unfortunately, they fit right in with his history of mean spirited attacks accusing his opponents of causing natural disasters and terrorism. To blame the victims of this disaster for what they’ve been through is appalling. Regrettably, Pat Robertson can’t be written off as an eccentric aberration of the right-wing—he’s still a leading figure in the conservative movement.

“At a time when our attention should be focused on helping the victims of this disaster, Robertson’s comments are beyond the pale.”

UPDATE 2: Fox News’s Shepard Smith, the only voice of sanity at that network, called out Robertson, saying “They don’t need that” (Media Matters):

UPDATE 3:

Not to be topped by Pat, Rush Limbaugh proves yet again that he is a boil on the ass of society: “Obama will use Haiti to boost credibility with “light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country”

Hat tip to Right Wing Watch for the shorter video clip.

Seriously WTF?

Plus, if it’s righteous retribution, why is Pat’s organization sending relief?  If this is God’s punishment, then Pat should be gleefully enjoying the pain and suffering of the infidels.

Can his God please Rapture him already?

Comment #1: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  01/13  at  04:54 PM

Clearly, in the mind of Pat Robertson, all of those simple black folk could not have thrown out the rightful white colonial power without diabolic help.

We’re now leaving the mind of Pat Robertson.  Hot showers with antibacterial soap and changes of clothing will be made available.

Comment #2: damnedyankee  on  01/13  at  04:55 PM

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Why?  Whywhywhywhywhy??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

It’s against my ethics to actively wish for another human being’s death, but… ooooooohhhhh the temptation.

What an evil fucking monster.

Comment #3: GeekGirlsRule  on  01/13  at  04:56 PM

Pat Robertson can eat a dick.

That’s about all I have to say about that.

Comment #4: Babieca  on  01/13  at  04:56 PM

My agnosticism is pushed more to the atheistic side whenever I hear Robertson talk.  Mainly due to the lack of a lightning bolt striking him down when he’s done.

Comment #5: damnedyankee  on  01/13  at  04:58 PM

</i>Yawn</i>

Isn’t he the one who said similar things about every other disaster?  He’s an evil man that people tolerate or even defend because he gives out “charity”.  He uses his money and donations to throw his weight around, just like a lot of abusers do.  I’ve heard people insist that we musn’t criticize him because then he’ll stop helping people.

Comment #6: bananacat  on  01/13  at  04:59 PM

Someone’s bearing false witness again!

I assume we are to take his “True story” in the internet fashion of “and then I died. True story.”

Comment #7: maurinsky  on  01/13  at  05:01 PM

The “true story” part of it got me too.

It’s quite telling that he thinks God was siding with the slave owners in the Haitian revolt though.

Comment #8: round guy  on  01/13  at  05:07 PM

Let me guess: he’s talking about the Bois Caiman thing, the voodoo ritual that basically preceded the Haitian Revolution.

Comment #9: JustinCognito  on  01/13  at  05:13 PM

That’s Pat! A fountain of compassion, tolerance and love towards humankind.

Comment #10: pitbullgirl65  on  01/13  at  05:14 PM

Didn’t the Haitians free themselves from the French during the time of Napoleon? In other words, the beginning of the 19th Century?

Boy, God can sure hold a grudge, can’t he?

Also, IIRC, the Haitians were greatly aided in their revolt by yellow fever, which devastated Napoleon’s troops. So the devil uses infectious disease, while God uses earthquakes. I’d have to say the devil is more considerate, since he at least leaves the buildings standing.

Comment #11: Bitter Scribe  on  01/13  at  05:17 PM

I will never understand why people are still surprised by anything that comes out of that doddering old fool’s head.  It’s like acting shocked that ants sting you when you jam your hand in their anthill; their brains can’t comprehend any other behavior

Comment #12: schism  on  01/13  at  05:18 PM

He seriously said “true story” in that?  Dear lord.  He’s impervious to irony.

Comment #13: preying mantis  on  01/13  at  05:45 PM

Agreed, # 12.  He’s a televanglist.  They’re immoral, unethical, and cruel definition.  They make their obscene millions bilking the desperate in exchange for snake oil.  Nothing he says surprises me, he’s a ghoul.

Comment #14: Gypsy Lee  on  01/13  at  05:55 PM

Bile and hatred kept Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms alive well beyond the mean.  I’m betting old Pat will be around spreading his special brand of bigotry for a good (bad?) while longer.

Comment #15: Swedgin  on  01/13  at  05:56 PM

A reasonable person would look at Haiti as conclusive proof that there is no god. Not only is Pat Robertson unreasonable, but a hateful scumbag to boot. I will never forget him cackling along with his fellow scumbag Falwell (now happily a rotting corpse) about 9/11 as god’s wrath on NYC.

Further proof that there is no god: the glacial pace at which Pat’s Korean-War-era dose of the syph has been eating away his pea brain—a real, just god would have turned his grey matter into swiss cheese by 1970.

Comment #16: Gracchus.  on  01/13  at  06:06 PM

So, Robertson is saying that ending Haitian slavery was the devil’s work?

Comment #17: rea  on  01/13  at  06:07 PM

So, Robertson is saying that ending Haitian slavery was the devil’s work?

Yes.

It’s the only successful case of black slaves overthrowing their white masters, and that can’t possibly happen without satanic influence.

Now, why God was unable to defeat Satan in this instance is troubling.  And I’m not quite getting why he waited so long—until after everyone who made the deal with the devil was already dead and in hell—for retribution, but I was just raised Catholic.  Same Name, but Different Sky Fairy.

Comment #18: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  01/13  at  06:16 PM

Did that little girl up to her waist in rubble “swear a pact with the devil?”  Even if it were true, which I don’t believe, Toady’s Haitians are not to blame, no matter how vindictive people like Robertson believe God to be.

Comment #19: Kwillow  on  01/13  at  06:22 PM

Don’t forget Robertson’s comments on the Tsunami in the Pacific.  They were just an act of NATURE- God doesn’t interfere in NATURE.

Comment #20: Kwillow  on  01/13  at  06:27 PM

I think the reichwing is fearful that people will start questioning the existance of God altogether.  An extreme natural disaster in portugal led to such thoughts in Europe - a massive quake/fire/tsunami that wiped out Lisbon and killed many as they sat in church on All Souls Day.

Comment #21: Ms Kate  on  01/13  at  06:28 PM

Do you mean Indian Ocean, kwillow?

Comment #22: Ms Kate  on  01/13  at  06:30 PM

Ah, the good old throwback to Puritan/Calvinist dogma.  God’s going to put you in Heaven or Hell because He/She/It already knows that you’ll end up there, being all All-Seeing and All-Knowing and outside of time and stuff, so you’re going to end up where you end up before you’re even born, damned to free will anyway.  But, of course, the only way WE stupid limited humans know if someone’s among the Elect or the Damned is by what happens to them (you know, if you’re a sinner bad stuff’s going to happen to you) so if bad stuff happens to someone it’s because OBVIOUSLY he/she sinned and is therefore being righteously punished.

So, long story short, if something bad happens, it’s because you’re a very, very bad person.  Bad things happening is absolute proof of sin.

Comment #23: tannenburg  on  01/13  at  06:46 PM

So according to Pat Robertson, black people get punished by god for not accepting slavery?

Comment #24: josesanders  on  01/13  at  07:19 PM

I hate these fucking assholes like Robertson.

Comment #25: Albert Cirrus  on  01/13  at  07:25 PM

One of these days, I’m really going to look forward to saying “God killed Pat Robertson because he sold his soul to Satan for wealth and power.”

Comment #26: Scott  on  01/13  at  07:29 PM

Haiti has been continuously punished by the US and most of Europe for the slave revolt that resulted in its independence, which is why it is one of the poorest nations in the world.

Comment #27: mnsr  on  01/13  at  07:36 PM

The distillation of Robertson’s comments, on FARK, shows the insanity of them:

“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, They were under the heel of the French, you know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. True story.”

It’s like he’s a breathless sixth-grader telling all his friends about a Big Foot sighting. “True story!”

Comment #28: Nil  on  01/13  at  07:41 PM

Attention, Pat: It was MEXICO that revolted against Napoleon III. Haiti revolted against the ORIGINAL Napoleon. If you could get your facts straight, it might help people believe you when you say “True story.”

Comment #29: Bitter Scribe  on  01/13  at  07:58 PM

Pat Robertson could use the phrase “True story” while telling me what he had for breakfast and I wouldn’t believe his lying, hateful ass.

Comment #30: Mark  on  01/13  at  08:01 PM

Incidentally, Limbaugh has this to say about Bill Clinton being named UN envoy to Haiti:

I’m just gonna tell you, if I was named envoy to Haiti, I’d quit government. Envoy to Haiti? You can’t even pick up a prostitute down there without genuine fear of AIDS.

Comment #31: jTuba  on  01/13  at  08:10 PM

Hmm, how would Limbaugh know that?

Comment #32: BetsyD  on  01/13  at  08:12 PM

If there was a hell, that man would burn in it.

Comment #33: kiki  on  01/13  at  08:14 PM

I fucking hope that shitsack gets leprosy and dies a horrible and agonizingly painful death and that he is completely alone in his final hours.

And I don’t feel even the slightest bit of guilt for feeling that way.  Fuck that guy.  Just fuck him.  Worthless piece of shit.

Comment #34: DTG in STL  on  01/13  at  08:37 PM

Boy, God can sure hold a grudge, can’t he?

By my calculations, a grudge about 205 years long.

Though if that’s how long God’s grudges take to kick in, it looks like Pat Robertson may be God’s judgment on us.

Comment #35: Mnemosyne  on  01/13  at  08:51 PM

Robertson knew this would get him publicity in national media, period. Which, of course, is evil.

Comment #36: mythago  on  01/13  at  09:17 PM

“Boy, God can sure hold a grudge, can’t he? “
Talk about your understatements!

“Did that little girl up to her waist in rubble “swear a pact with the devil?” Even if it were true, which I don’t believe, Toady’s Haitians are not to blame, no matter how vindictive people like Robertson believe God to be.”
Keep in mind, this is the same God supposedly still punishing the entirety of humanity for something two people did thousands of years ago. “Vindictive” doesn’t even BEGIN to describe it…

Comment #37: Devonian  on  01/13  at  09:24 PM

“I’m just gonna tell you, if I was named envoy to Haiti, I’d quit government. Envoy to Haiti? You can’t even pick up a prostitute down there without genuine fear of AIDS.”

He’d quit the government if they sent him somewhere he couldn’t buy consent from one of the most vulnerable populations without fear of catching a communicable disease with which they’ve been infected by previous consent-purchasers?

Comment #38: preying mantis  on  01/13  at  09:32 PM

How can a “man of God” be so evil.

It’s part of the job description for the Invisible Sky Fairy’s self-appointed spokesscum.

Comment #39: Nobody in Particular  on  01/13  at  09:50 PM

Well, if anybody would know about sex tourism, it’s Limbaugh. God, what a shitstain.

Comment #40: ginmar  on  01/13  at  09:54 PM

You can’t even pick up a prostitute down there without genuine fear of AIDS.

Um.  Where can you pick up a prostitute without a genuine fear of AIDS?  Amsterdam, maybe?

And I’m pretty sure that Haiti’s AIDS problem isn’t that bad, especially considering its poverty and lack of access to health care.  Black != infected with AIDS, asshole.

Comment #41: keshmeshi  on  01/13  at  09:55 PM

I’m just gonna tell you, if I was named envoy to Haiti, I’d quit government. Envoy to Haiti? You can’t even pick up a prostitute down there without genuine fear of AIDS.

Um…what?

Am I missing something, or did this guy just admit that one of his standards for judging a country is how safe it is to pay for sex there?

Jesus Christ. How do these people get taken seriously?

Comment #42: Bitter Scribe  on  01/13  at  10:34 PM

So I just saw the Countdown clip featuring Limbaugh’s vile words, and I’m just gonna say it.

I wish that thing would have died a few weeks ago in Hawaii.  And I still hope it fucking dies.

Indeed, earth will become a slightly better place to live on the day that Rush Limbaugh ceases to exist.  I will celebrate it’s passing when it comes, and consider it a great day for humanity.

And no, that disgusting glob of carbon doesn’t even deserve the minimum courtesy of being referred to as if it were a person.  Of the 6.5 Billion homo sapiens currently on this earth, it ranks as one of the most despicable.

It is an inhuman fucking monster, and we all would have been better off if it had never been spawned.

Comment #43: DTG in STL  on  01/13  at  11:17 PM

Haiti has been continuously punished by the US and most of Europe for the slave revolt that resulted in its independence, which is why it is one of the poorest nations in the world.

They’re a banana republic sadly.  The US hasn’t punished them for their slave revolt, they allow horrid business practice and such for cheap bananas and other fruits.  The united states has had a long history of loathing our dark citizens but it isn’t as if we loathe foreign dark people.

If anything Robertson deals with natural disasters this way.  Isn’t it every time a major catastrophe happens he says it was their own fault by loving satan and not being christian?  It doesn’t help Haiti that their majority religion is still Catholicism thus a devil religion.  When Robertson drops dead I only pray there is an afterlife and it gives him a chance to last in purgatory to wash his sins clean.

Comment #44: Xeranar  on  01/14  at  01:00 AM

Re: comment #1
“Plus, if it’s righteous retribution, why is Pat’s organization sending relief? “

Robertson is asking his flock to send him money. He never said he’s going to send it to Haiti. At least not without skimming a lot off the top. He’s a grifter using what works best—religion.

Plus—whoever the hell that “Christie” girl is who’s nodding and uh-huhing Robertson in that clip, WTF is wrong with you girl? Do you need a job that bad? Jeebus.

Comment #45: BerkeleyMom  on  01/14  at  01:43 AM

We imposed a decades long boycott of the entire country after the slave revolt, pretty much ensuring that the country never got off the ground economically. A successful slave revolt made slave owners and the U.S. government piss their pants back then, and they did everything to could to destroy the country. This shit doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Plantation owners in the U.S. weren’t looking at Haiti and thinking “That has nothing to do with us.”

Comment #46: chingona  on  01/14  at  02:28 AM

Comment #47: chingona  on  01/14  at  02:28 AM

And I’m pretty sure that Haiti’s AIDS problem isn’t that bad, especially considering its poverty and lack of access to health care.

Haiti does have a real problem with AIDS, with a prevalence rate of ~2%, the highest in the Americas, and even that’s down substantially from where it was five years ago, ten years ago.

Comment #48: Brian  on  01/14  at  02:32 AM

@Brian,

I stand corrected, but it’s still absurd to worry about STDs among prostitutes in one country and not another.  If STDs are a concern, then it’s unwise to solicit sex workers in any country.

Comment #49: keshmeshi  on  01/14  at  03:34 AM

I would just like to point out the <strike>irony</strike> hypocrisy that Robertson most likely labels himself as “pro-life”.  Let’s keep a record of these incidents for the next time that someone insists that “pro-lifers” really truly are arguing in good faith and only care about saving the precious little embryos.

Comment #50: bananacat  on  01/14  at  11:11 AM

“How can a “man of God” be so evil.”

Epic fucking fail, Pam.  Most of the predators and perhaps 99% of the felon population are believers in God.  It TAKES a man of God to talk shit about “pacts with the devil”; we atheists are interested in humanitarian relief, geology, civil engineering, economic development, etc.

I mean I like you Pam, but really.

Comment #51: Bruce Godfrey  on  01/14  at  01:27 PM

As much as I dislike the public forum provided Limbaugh by the MSM, he does provide a valuable service in reminding those naïve souls who believe we’re now living in a post-racial society that we still have a goddamn long way to go before we can join our fellow citizens in a rousing rendition of “Ebony and Ivory.”

Comment #52: BobbyV  on  01/14  at  01:30 PM

And as for Pat Robertson - never speak ill of the dead!

You’re both right:  Haiti does have an AIDS problem, mostly because it was the first place it really took hold in the Americas, but they have had a lot of success in fighting it, so it’s not the AIDS-ridden hellhole that Limbaugh is trying to imply.

Comment #54: Mnemosyne  on  01/14  at  01:38 PM

Bruce Godfrey, #51: THANK YOU. I was trying to be more circumspect about that, since Pam is usually more on the ball, but really… gaawwwrrrrd isn’t what’s needed here, quite the contrary.

Comment #55: Nobody in Particular  on  01/14  at  02:02 PM

You know, everyone made a big effing deal out of Obama’s ties to Jeremiah Wright and his “hate speech.” So why isn’t the mainstream media linking Robertson to the incoming governor of Virginia? After all, McConnell is a graduate of PR’s university. And invited him to his inauguration. Why isn’t anyone pushing for McConnell to condemn his remarks?

Comment #56: louC  on  01/14  at  05:24 PM

Bitter Scribe, comment #29, you’re absolutely right. Haïti gained its independence under Napoléon I, in 1803.  But the Mad Preacher refers to Napoléon III, president then emperor from 1848 to 1870.

From the Pat Robertsons of the world, one DOES expect utter nonsense on non-checkable facts, such as pacts with the devil or creation or non-believers-one-way-ticket-to-hell.  But so blatant a mistake on something so… easy?

Oh well, who am I kidding?  I loved it!
