Next entry: First Draft of Obama Acceptance Speech Revealed Previous entry: Our New Socialist Overlords Begin Assembling The Politburo

PUMAs, eat my poo

Women are actually the winners this election, in no small part thanks to Obama’s influence on down ticket wins.  We saw a complete shutdown of anti-choice initiatives around the country, and in another sign of thing to come, we now have a record number of female members of Congress.  The notion that Sarah Palin is a “feminist” because she has a vagina and a power suit was shut down, as was the idea that we can’t work with pro-feminist men to get our way.  The “all in this together” crowd won out and showed that we aren’t stupid, we aren’t un-feminist, and we will work diligently to improve life for women in this country.  One election at a time.

Seriously, just read these highlights:

  *  Florida: Suzanne Kosmas, an advocate of children’s issues, universal healthcare and alternative energy, beat Abramoff buddy Rep. Tom Feeney.
  * Illinois: Debbie Halvorson trounced concrete magnate Marty Ozinga in a district that has not elected a Dem in 14 years.
  * Colorado: Betsy Markey fought back against nasty personal attacks to defeat KKK-approved Rep. Marilyn Musgrave.
  * Arizona: Ann Kirkpatrick wrested a Dem seat from antichoice mining lobbyist Sydney Hay.
  * Maine: Chellie Pingree, whose daughter is a state rep, defeated Charlie Summers.
  * Ohio: Marcia Fudge will continue as hardworking heir to Stephanie Tubbs-Jones.
  * New Hampshire: Wins by Carol Shea-Porter and Jeanne Shaheen.

eat my poo

Was that really necessary? I’m in a highly imaginative state right now.

The “all in this together” crowd won out and showed that we aren’t stupid, we aren’t un-feminist, and we will work diligently to improve life for women in this country.

So what’s your agenda?  Seriously, put forward five or six pro-woman policies that are appropriate uses of the power of the President - no pink fluffy unicorn wishes.

Comment #2: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/05  at  03:51 PM

Appointing federal judges that are pro-choice, dismantling Bush’s abstinence-only policies, refunding UNFPA, rescinding the global gag rule, and filling Cabinet positions with people who make women’s health and well-being a priority, from Health and Human Services to the Secretary of the State.  Signing into law bills that legalize abortion, increase contraception access, require equal pay for equal work (no stupid deadlines that SCOTUS can use to step around it), and signing a universal health care bill that would mean lower mortality rates from breast cancer and cervical cancer.  Appointing women into Cabinet positions. Are these pink fluffy unicorn wishes?  Because under Bill Clinton, much of this was SOP.

Comment #3: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  04:03 PM

Oh, and sorry that was way more than 5 or 6.  Didn’t mean to overload your skepticism.

Comment #4: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  04:03 PM

Oh, Amanda, don’t get your pretty little head in a tizzy. Anything that has to do with women’s things and doesn’t directly benefit men is the very definition of pink fluffy unicorn wishes!

Comment #5: mythago  on  11/05  at  04:07 PM

For one: Appoint pro-abortion and pro-feminism justices to the Supreme Court and judges for other courts.

Crack down on domestic terrorism.

Support science education and health research.

Comment #6: Scott  on  11/05  at  04:08 PM

Sorry, I was typing while everyone else was hitting “Blaspheme.”  smile

Amanda’s list is better than mine anyway…

Comment #7: Scott  on  11/05  at  04:09 PM

Are these pink fluffy unicorn wishes?

Nope, they’re brilliant.  Query - UNFPA?  How would the President get around state limitations on abortion?

To clarify - pink fluffy unicorn wishes would be things like overturning California’s Prop 8, which I’ve seen suggested - not going to be done by the President.

Comment #8: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/05  at  04:10 PM

Don’t forget, Dina Titus (pro-choice, pro-family and children) beat the incumbent Jon Porter (Bushco stooge) in Nevada.

Having more women representatives is a far bigger gain for women and families than having a token female VP ever could have been.  It’s sad that the PUMAs could not understand that reality.

Comment #9: history_mom  on  11/05  at  04:13 PM

Yes, but an Obama administration could make court appointments (especially to SCOTUS) that would make this more likely.  I haven’t seen anybody suggesting that Obama’s fairy dust will magically wipe away every political reality that liberals don’t like.

Comment #10: The Opoponax  on  11/05  at  04:22 PM

UNFPA has nothing to do with state restrictions. It’s the UN family planning initiative.  The way that we get around state restrictions is to pass federal legislation and to appoint justices who will uphold it.

Comment #11: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  04:25 PM

Yes, but an Obama administration could make court appointments (especially to SCOTUS) that would make this more likely.

That would be an appropriate use of Presidential power, yes - although I’ve seen that as part of a state constitution, it wouldn’t be subject to SCOTUS review.

And mythago - grow up.  I’m posting from a polity which is one of the best around for women’s rights, has its top places held by women, and on Saturday I’ll be tossing up between voting for one of two women as preferred PM.  I’m concerned with what realistically can be hoped for from a pro-woman Presidency (and a pro-gay, pro-peace, pro-environment…)

Comment #12: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/05  at  04:29 PM

These positions are more than symbolic.  They hold a shit ton of power.

Comment #13: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  04:40 PM

Did you see the exit polls? Women really won this election for Obama. That’s as much a repudiation of the PUMA argument as anything.

Comment #14: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  11/05  at  04:42 PM

There are also a lot of lower-level positions that will make a difference, from DOJ and FBI to the department of Labor, the NLRB…

Comment #15: paul  on  11/05  at  04:46 PM

Random: The name Marcia Fudge just makes me think of of Marcia Brady’s delicious homemade fudge that Jan, like everything in her life, is envious of. (The Brady Bunch was syndicated for a long long time.)

And yes, having more representatives in Congress is more powerful than one Vice President.  Palin could not have become Cheney.

Plus, it would be easier to influence a President Obama to push for pro-woman policies than say it would have been for McCain.  I personally will continue to donate to and assist pro-woman organizations.

Comment #16: Shakti  on  11/05  at  04:50 PM

although I’ve seen that as part of a state constitution, it wouldn’t be subject to SCOTUS review.

Sure it would, if there are (federal) constitutionality questions.  The meme that’s begun to circulate that Prop. 8 is immune to SCOTUS review seems to come from folks who misinterpret the adage that a state supreme court is the final arbiter of that state’s constitution.

Comment #17: jfpbookworm  on  11/05  at  05:02 PM

If you’re really all about “we’re all in this together,” take a stick of dynamite, shove it up the butt of the next person who mentions “PUMAs”, and light a match to it.  The phrase has no use whatsoever but to be divisive.

Comment #18: Melinda  on  11/05  at  05:08 PM

Let’s hope that we can add Darcy Burner in Washington’s 8th CD to that list.

Comment #19: Linnaeus  on  11/05  at  05:11 PM

Er, then how does one explain the authority of Loving V. Virginia?

Comment #20: kodiak  on  11/05  at  05:17 PM

It’s true, state constitutions aren’t subject to SCOTUS review or tests of federal constitutionality. Just ask the King of Montana.

Comment #21: Auguste  on  11/05  at  05:19 PM

PiatoR, please read “Loving versus Virginia” if you must.

Prior to that decision, states had both laws and constitutional law backing their bans on interracial marriage.  That single decision wiped them all away because the federal government’s constitution and bill of rights take precidence over the state government.

Fixed that for ya.

not only did debbie halvorson take illinois 11th back to dem power after 14 years, but she is also the first woman to respresent our district in the house. i was so happy to see her win last night, she’s freaking awesome!

Comment #24: jessilikewhoa  on  11/05  at  05:33 PM

I am so happy.  I was actually worried the PUMAs would pull something off.

Query - UNFPA?  How would the President get around state limitations on abortion?

I don’t think UNFPA even provides abortion services.  It’s a general reproductive health organization—contraception, safe birth, repairing fistula, that kind of thing.

And mythago - grow up.  I’m posting from a polity which is one of the best around for women’s rights, has its top places held by women, and on Saturday I’ll be tossing up between voting for one of two women as preferred PM.

Good times, good times!

Sorry, two seperate questions.  What is UNFPA, and how could a President get around state restrictions on abortion?

Add a third question - what steps could a President take to ensure effective de facto access to abortion at the local level even if the de jure battle was won?  As I recall, there’s a Republican strategy to cut off actual access even as they lose teh legal battle.

Feminism by association?  Dude.  Weak.

I don’t call myself a feminist.  I’m just poking at mythago’s assumption that I’m marginalising women’s issues, rather than just trying to get a good grasp around what the President can and can’t do.

Comment #28: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/05  at  06:07 PM

The Federal government could “preempt the field of law” and forbid the states from placing certain restrictions on abortion.  While the states traditional regulate such things under the ‘police power’ the Feds could regulate under ‘civil rights.’

Comment #29: Magis  on  11/05  at  06:26 PM

NH not only re-elected Shea-Porter and elected Shaheen, but Shaheen will be our first female Senator ever,

AND

the NH State Senate is the first US state legislative body to have a female majority.  The first.

Comment #30: may  on  11/05  at  06:37 PM

I don’t think UNFPA even provides abortion services.

Correct.  Bush cut funding out of an ideological opposition to contraception, against the wishes of his then Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Piator, a President can increase abortion access mainly through the courts.  But he could also sign the Freedom of Choice Act.  He could also repeal the Hyde Amendment, but that’s not going to happen.

Comment #31: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  06:38 PM

That’s quite an accomplishment for NH! I wasn’t aware.

Comment #32: Ben D.  on  11/05  at  06:47 PM

UNFPA is the United Nations Population Fund.  They provide basic reproductive health care to women in impoverished parts of the world.

I donated to the 34 Million Friends campaign back in 2002 or thereabouts.  I can’t believe it’s been so long.

Comment #33: killjoy  on  11/05  at  07:03 PM

Hey - would Hillary Clinton as Attorney General be a good idea, or totally batshit stupid?

Comment #34: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/05  at  07:18 PM

the NH State Senate is the first US state legislative body to have a female majority.  The first.

I might have to stop making fun of my state of birth!  Which is exciting, but also troublesome, because what with this whole presidential election and democratic majority in the house and senate, and now this,  I’m running out of snark targets.

Here’s a link, for those who are interested: http://www.nhpr.org/node/18785

Right. And another really screamingly bad thing is Bush administration refused to fund any family planning organization that provided abortion counseling to women in other countries. So all the family planning international aid went to religious types who probably told women to keep their legs crossed and believe in God.

Comment #37: lou  on  11/05  at  07:58 PM

HRC hasn’t had any prosecutorial work or duties since she was involved in a minor way during Watergate, I think a better pick would be Henry Waxman or Patrick Leahy.

I’m posting from a polity which is one of the best around for women’s rights, has its top places held by women, and on Saturday I’ll be tossing up between voting for one of two women as preferred PM

I don’t really care from what polity you’re posting stupid shit, nor do I care that some of your best friends piss sitting down. You have this bad habit of making ‘funny’ comments that are really snotty, and then getting petulant when called on it.  Try acting like a grown-up.

I’m with Scott - crack down on anti-abortion terrorism. Also, start appointing judges who follow the law, rather than judges who say “how high” when their right-wing masters tell them to jump. Paid family leave would be cool, too.

Comment #39: mythago  on  11/06  at  05:39 AM

Sarah Palin..only 5 abortions away from being respected by feminazis.

Comment #40: Larry  on  11/06  at  08:41 AM

Oh god.  Larry figured out our secret feminazi hand shake.  Shit.

I guess we can change the handshake from an on-the-spot abortion to a hysterectomy….any other ideas?

Comment #41: speedbudget  on  11/06  at  09:32 AM

“Pumas can eat my poo”

...I think you use that word more than you think you do.

Comment #42: Mikey  on  11/06  at  09:40 AM

I don’t think that’s a bad idea.  I like having her as a senator, tho.
I think there are fewer people who’d make a good AG than would make a good Junior Senator from New York, and Patterson can appoint someone groovy. So it’s a good opportunity for Sen Clinton to have a bit more influence, and we don’t lose the seat.

My only concern with HRC as AG is that the DoJ needs some serious spring cleaning, and she has a bad track record on choosing good people. Still, she won’t fill it with Falwellbots, and once it’s staffed she would be made of awesome.

Comment #43: pepito  on  11/06  at  10:50 AM

Larry, mastering the CUT and PASTE buttons eh?  Your conservatron masters are pleased….

Comment #44: Eric, Rejector of Memez  on  11/06  at  12:57 PM

It’s weird when right wingers assume “feminazis” want to be Sarah Palin.  It’s like homophobes who think every gay guy wants their cock. Sorry, it doesn’t work like that, and on a certain level, they know it, and they are bitter that it doesn’t work like that.

Comment #45: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/06  at  02:14 PM

I guess if Palin had released her medical records we’d know how many abortions she has or hasn’t had, eh?

Comment #46: mythago  on  11/06  at  03:06 PM

Larry’s mother..only one abortion away from being respected by me.

God, you people really do think that if you’re not forcing your will on other people, they’ll be forcing theirs on you. It must suck to live your life looking over your shoulder all the time.

Comment #47: junk science  on  11/06  at  03:54 PM

Probably.  I’m only human.

Try acting like a grown-up.

Would you care to address your own childish habit of calling people out on shit based on your own misreadings, and then failing to acknowledge this later?

Comment #48: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  11/06  at  06:07 PM

Odd, but I know lots of humans who are able to back down when a “funny” remark is actually obnoxious, and whose lower lips do not jerk in a manner normally associated with knees. But you know, I’m just a female who’s likely fantasizing about Obama’s Pink Unicorn Fluffiness Initiative so don’t mind me.

Comment #49: mythago  on  11/06  at  06:23 PM

I think abstinence only program is absolute scam!  It was a scheme to transfer federal money to Bush friends and base.  It has been proven over and over again the program is not working, yet they pour big money into wingnut programs.

Comment #50: suvorov  on  11/06  at  09:52 PM

I see the feminist movement deeply divided right now.  I’ve been accused of not being a feminist because I’m not doing enough on issues of class or race.  Then, on the very same day, I’ve been accused of not being a feminist, because I didn’t advocate voting for McCain/Palin, as they at least had a woman on the ticket.  It seems to me that feminism no longer has any fixed meaning whatsoever.

Comment #51: Echidne of the snakes  on  11/08  at  02:19 AM
