Randall Terry: predicts ‘random acts of violence’ ahead over health care legislation

Womb control advocate Randall Terry was really working hard to rachet up the level of crazy to stratospheric heights at his latest presser, this one regarding health care reform legislation. In fact, he has developed ESP—if the bill isn't rejected he sees violence ahead. Not just any random violence, mind you, but acts we haven't seen in this country since the Civil War, including violent "reprisals against those deemed guilty".

Christian at Right Wing Watch introduces the video of Terry with this observation:

At a typical Randall Terry press conference one can expect to hear all sorts of overheated rhetoric about abortion – that it’s murder, that abortion clinics are places of "mass genocide," and so forth. But in recent weeks, he has amped up his rhetoric to insane new heights over the healthcare legislation before Congress, which he claims would pay for “child-killing.”

At today’s press conference, however, Terry was quick to point out that he has supposedly been a "non-violent" leader for 25 years, and he ridiculed those who accuse him and other right-wing leaders of "stirring up domestic terrorism”:

Earlier this week Terry called for the rejection of the bill and warned of "violent convulsions" of a level that hasn't been seen since the Civil War if the bill is passed.

These fringers are frightening.

You know, if it was an Islamic fantasist making these statements instead of a Xtian fantasist, he’d end up in Supermax custody instead of the podium of the National Press Club.

What Gracchus said.

If he is given access to the NPC he’s not fringe, he’s accepted into the mainstream.

At least those injured in the random thuglican anti-american violence will have health care.

Comment #3: Ms Kate  on  07/22  at  01:08 PM

You’ll forgive me if I’m rather pessimistic about getting health care done. That said, Terry is dangerous.

Comment #4: BrianX  on  07/22  at  01:11 PM

I hate to break it to Terry but he, and most other Americans, are already paying for abortion through existing health insurance pools and their taxes.  Medicaid pays for abortion services, at least it does in my state.

Is Terry warning or threatening? As for violence, bring it on. They are not strong enough to win, so it will only weaken them.

It’s way past time for a RICO investigation against these people.

Randall Terry, a class act as always.

Great family values there, R.T.

Terry should be more careful about making terroristic threats so soon after the murder of Dr. Tiller.

Comment #9: bananacat  on  07/22  at  02:44 PM

He’s making clear what he can get away with.  It’s a play for more power among the nutjob set.

Comment #10: Punditus Maximus  on  07/22  at  02:50 PM

Randall Terry INCITES random acts of violence.  I assume he thinks he can garner more power and money if these acts occur.  Or perhaps he believes he can acquire more power based on our Government’s *response* to these acts of violence.

I think the entire Right Wing, from FOX to the NRA and “Christianists” are prodding their base into committing violent acts such as Dr. Tiller’s murder, the police in Pittsburg, and so on.  When the day comes that the DOJ arrests Cheney or Rove, the “Rightists” are hoping for armed insurrection.  They may even get it, though I doubt it will be successful.  Their attempts at organizing the “Tea Bagging” flopped like a dead fish.

Comment #11: Kwillow  on  07/22  at  03:47 PM

catgirl,

Why should he? Not only was Dr. Tiller’s assassination most effective (clinic closed), it was also pretty much repercussion-free. Dr. Tiller’s accused assassin is mailing pamphlets justifying the killing of Ob/Gyns from jail as we speak, and before Dr. Tiller was even laid to rest President Obama appointed Alexia Kelley to head a DHHS group tasked with abortion-related policy recommendations.

They tried to use the ballot box to get their way.  That almost worked (I bet Scalia and the rest of the ConservoNut wing of SCOTUS already have a America-to-Gilead transition plan ready to go).  Now they have no other choice but to reach for the ammo box

As another great advocate of law-and-order and control over people once said, “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun…”

Comment #13: MikeEss  on  07/22  at  04:14 PM

As long as he just predicts it, shaking his head ruefully at the damage that will be done by the people’s righteous wrath, he’s legally in the clear. But if half of his staff isn’t undercover FBI agents by now, they’re not doing their job. (One nice side effect of right-wing terrorists being mainstreamed is that your typical close-cropped law enforcement typing doesn’t have a lot of trouble blending in…)

Comment #14: paul  on  07/22  at  04:18 PM

Ema, I just meant that he should be more careful about making threats because someone might take him seriously and he could get into trouble, although I realize it’s not very likely that will happen.

Comment #15: bananacat  on  07/22  at  04:30 PM

Woodrow Wilson was a complete bastard with no redeeming qualities (the W of his day) so I dont like to quote him
But when the German ambasador told him he couldnt go to war because a hundred thousand Americans of German decent would risre up in revolt if he did, Wilsons reply was that we had at least that many lamposts to hang them from

Comment #16: jefft452  on  07/22  at  06:54 PM

If I said “If Randall Terry keeps making threats like that, someone’s going to shoot him” on television, it’d be incitement and a threat, and you know he’d be screaming the loudest to get my dangerous self in jail.

So, why can he say the same thing and be fine?

Comment #17: Antigone  on  07/22  at  07:31 PM

“So, why can he say the same thing and be fine?”

It’s Okay If You’re A Rightwing Religious Nutcase (IOKIYARWRN)...

Comment #18: MikeEss  on  07/22  at  07:41 PM

Shouldn’t that headline be “Randall Terry promises random acts of violence if demands are not met”?

Comment #19: preying mantis  on  07/22  at  09:41 PM

How is this any different than what he always did?  Terry gets mad when people get health care, and has a terrorist meltdown.  Yeah, sure, it’s gonna be like the civil war.

Comment #20: saraeanderson  on  07/23  at  03:12 AM

The FBI is way too busy infiltrating Burning Man to be involved with Terry’s group.

Comment #21: Punditus Maximus  on  07/23  at  04:27 AM

How nice of of Randall Terry and Operation Rescue to… warn… us of future violence if we do not do as they say.

It was also nice when Osama Bin Laden warned us, but hey, it looks like you can actually get away with it if you say you’re all about Jesus.

So, why the FUCK am I not hearing about the FBI busting down his door and beating the everloving hell out of him?

Comment #22: StarStorm  on  07/23  at  04:36 AM

And he calls himself a Libertarian. My ass!

Comment #23: whiskeytangofoxtrot  on  07/23  at  05:21 AM

Randall Terry clearly shows the symptoms of a deepening antisocial psychosis that would, were he an out-of-work drifter, place him at the top of any local police department’s watch list. It’s their support of pro-violence thugs like Mr. Terry that shows the Right-to-Life movement is nothing more than another collection of criminals hiding their anti-democratic agenda behind the seemingly laudable goal of protecting human life.

BobbyV on 07/23 at 02:37 AM

Only if their (the unemployed drifters, that is…) rantings were directed against the moneyed establishment. Out-of-work drifters who rail against the people Terry rails against might be watched,

a) because these guys are often a bit loopy and thus might eventually redirect their rage, so watch, or:

b) because they are potential recruits for a vigilante mob. Those come in handy sometimes.

Remember, right after 9/11, the first group the FBI investigated was a commune of Israeli lesbians in NYC, suspicious because they worked for peace with the Palestinians…

And were, you know, lesbians.

Seriously—and while I no longer have a cite for the above, IIRC it was a serious (if underplayed) news item—when I was working a security job, I had to take the California Homeland Security training (twice…). And in their dramatized examples of who to be suspicious of, a middle-aged lady with animal rights bumper-stickers was right up there with a couple of Middle-Eastern looking guys with accents and a truck full of fertilizer and diesel fuel…

Gotta get our priorities straight here. Can’t be wasting time worrying about White Men of God…

Comment #25: Mark Foxwell  on  07/23  at  09:01 AM

Dude, what the fuck?!

Don’t you remember Janet Napolitano’s memo about right-wing extremism? I suppose I’m on her shitlist because I’m a “disgruntled veteran” who votes third party. Left-wing and right-wing extremism are equally shit. It doesn’t matter if you’re an eco-terrorist or an abortion clinic bomber. Don’t pretend that your side and only your side of the political spectrum is being shit on. When conservatives are in office, they go for the lefties. If a liberal’s in office, go what, they go for the conservatives.
