Republican Sexual Hypocrites, 2010 edition: add anti-gay California State Senator Roy Ashburn

We haven’t seen a new batch of Republican Sexual Hypocrites so far in 2010, but in slides anti-gay California State Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield), who manages a triple play.

  1. After being pulled over for driving erratically in downtown Sacramento at 2AM on Wed., he earned a DUI, reeking of alcohol, with bloodshot eyes, and blew over a .08.
  2. He was driving a state vehicle, owned by the taxpayers at the time. Ashburn immediately won’t be allowed to drive any vehicle for 30 days.
  3. And the conservative “family values” pol, who fought marriage equality, did this after leaving a gay nightclub, Faces, with an unidentified man in the state vehicle.

Let’s go to the video…

Ashburn, a father of four, is a Republican Senator representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties with a history of opposing gay rights.

Ashburn issued a statement on the arrest Wednesday afternoon:

I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”

As Joe Jervis notes, Roy easily meets the Larry Craig gold standard of Republican Sexual Hypocrite:

He also has a 100% rating from the anti-gay Capitol Resource Family Impact group for voting against every LGBT rights bill during his tenure.

Don’t you wonder whether the “unidentified man” in the car knew he was cruising off with a self-loathing homo-hater? If he didn’t, he certainly knows now…

Love it when public officials of all stripes, especially the self-righteously indignant lot that opposes same-sex marriage for no other reason than “Queers is the devil”, fall on their smug lil’ faces.  It’s like Jim Traficant bleating all those years about corruption then it turns out he’s as corrupt as anyone.  Irony, polliticians be thy name.

See, it sounds good, except for the bolded part. A truly remorseful man manufactures his own consequences—in this case either resignation or disavowal of the noxious and bigoted public positions that resulted from his own self-loathing.

Drunk driving, and bad driving in general, is one thing that really bothers me that people don’t take as seriously as they should.  Fortunately there aren’t as many other people around at 2 a.m., but he could have crashed into another car and killed a child who was in it.  Driving is already dangerous enough without adding alcohol into it.  Presumably this man is rich enough that he can afford to take a freaking taxi home.

Seriously, I want to start a campaign to post pictures of the most virulently anti-gay politicians in all gay bars and night clubs. As a public service. His poor date must feel beyond mortified.

Ho hum, another day, another Republican exposed as a sexual hypocrite.

But, until the Republican/Tea Bagger/Wingnut/Nutcase/Religious Reich contingent in America wakes up and realizes they need to pay attention to what their politicians and authorities do and not just what they say, nothing will change.

Unfortunately, problems like this will just indicate to the hardcore loons that they need to apply stricter purity tests, instead of recognizing the same hypocrisy in themselves and correcting their perspective to become more accepting of differences…

I happen to live in his district, but I find this news heartening, just as a few weeks ago the daily newspaper in the county sear ran an editorial cartoon pointing out the absurdity of DADT and not letting gays serve in the military.

The problem is that many of these people have been literally trained since childhood to obey authority and do as they say, not as they do.  You really need to read about Micheal and Debi Pearl to truly understand the extreme they will take this too.

Just a minor question:

Are there any prominent Republicans rolling around habitually ranting against, I dunno, serial killers of truck-stop hookers, or sheep-rapists, or arsonists targetting churches?

Comment #8: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  03/04  at  06:58 PM

Could his last name be any more ironic?  Especially since such folk rarely prepare properly for their escapades?

Comment #9: Ms Kate  on  03/04  at  07:05 PM

No, but there are hoardes of them complaining how many people are riding on other people’s work, not contributing anything and skimming money off real Murricans.

And literally screaming hoardes of them (with badly spelled placards) constantly ranting about how horrible big government trying to micromanage every aspect of their lives while spending money on pointless causes is.

And saying how awful it is that everyone is trying to force their belief systems on the children and stifle freedom of speech and free exercise of religion.

Oh, and porn. Don’t forget porn. The “I am deeply offended that the hotel we had our Purity Conference at didn’t block all the pay per view porn channels” people, and the “I had to rewind 47 times to realize how horrified I was at the smut on that awful show I watch every week is” people.

Projection is alive and well.

It is not known if State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield) drives with a wide stance.

It really never is so much a question of “if” with these guys, so much as “when.”

Comment #13: damnedyankee  on  03/04  at  07:36 PM

Being the guy who doth protest too much is practically a cliche by now.

Comment #14: Hector B.  on  03/04  at  07:38 PM

You can almost pity this man, who hates himself due to how he has been brainwashed if only he didn’t take it out on those whom have not.

Comment #15: Tesla Dethray  on  03/04  at  08:23 PM

When the guy in the bar asked him what he did, I wonder what he said?

Comment #16: Bitter Scribe  on  03/04  at  10:13 PM

!!!!  This LITERALLY had me doing the “Woody Woodpecker” (irony!) laugh, followed by a satisfied, descending sigh: “AAHHHhhhhhhhh!”

Republicans.  Comedy gold.  Closeted comedy gold.

PiaToR, the serial killer Ted Bundy was a Republican volunteer, and managed to stay rotten to the last:

The night before he was executed, Bundy granted a taped interview to James Dobson, psychologist and founder of the Christian evangelical organization Focus on the Family.[96]  During the interview, Bundy made repeated, previously unclaimed statements regarding pornographic “root” of his crimes. Bundy stated that while pornography did not cause him to commit murder, the consumption of violent pornography helped “shape and mold” his violence into “behavior too terrible to describe.” He alleged that he felt that violence in the media, “particularly sexualized violence,” sent boys “down the road to being Ted Bundys.” In the same interview, Bundy stated:

“You are going to kill me, and that will protect society from me. But out there are many, many more people who are addicted to pornography, and you are doing nothing about that.”[97

You know, part of me wonders if this isn’t similar to the Strom Thurmond situation; one more bigot keeping the underclass down so they can take advantage of their superior position. This guy wants his partners to be ashamed of being gay, afraid to come out of the closet to report on his own affairs.

Comment #19: Left_Wing_Fox  on  03/05  at  12:25 AM

I wonder how he reconciled his own homosexuality, I can at least begrudge him a modicum of respect if he was self-loathing enough to destroy his life and avoid granting his sexual desires but to boldly go out and vote against the bills then get a male partner for escapades is just hilariously hypocritical.  This guy is now going to be burned in effigy by teabaggers everywhere and to be fair, I see no reason he should be drummed out of the senate for a drunk driving offense until he is convicted (which is a fair proceeding and follows most state legislature rules.)

To the Ted Bundy remark, you have to look at the psychological patterns of characters such as him.  He has an overwhelming desire to be “liked” and subterfuge.  The ultimate goal is to satisfy his sadistic nature.  That plays well with the right wing religious agenda because once you build confidence you can pretty much do anything you want to the crowd and they’ll still love you.

Comment #20: Xeranar  on  03/05  at  08:18 AM

Please, please, please let him be connected to C Street and the Family.

Comment #21: jfwlucy  on  03/05  at  11:39 AM

jfwlucy:  Unfortunately, while he claims to be a Christian, C street and the Family are based in Washington, although he might be associated with a California branch which would by now trying to disassociate themselves from him at the speed of light…........

His poor date must feel beyond mortified.

I’d guess that would depend on whether or not he was paid up front.
