Robert Novak denies hit and run, even as witness saw victim on his car

Perhaps it’s time to take the keys away if The Compassionate Conservative Prince of Darkness couldn’t see the cyclist he just hit on the hood of his vehicle. Think Progress:

Novak initially “drove away from the scene,” but turned around when “a bicyclist stopped him and said, ‘You hit someone.’” Novak claimed: “I didn’t know I hit anybody.” But Washington DC’s local ABC affiliate interviewed the bicyclist who saw the incident. WJLA’s Suzanne Kennedy reported live from the scene:

I just spoke with the bicyclist about three minutes ago. He tells me that the pedestrian was actually splayed across the front of Novak’s convertible, and that there would be absolutely no way Novak would have not known that he had hit someone.

He was misquoted. What he actually said was “I didn’t know I hit anybody important. Otherwise, don’t bother me peasant.”

Wow.  He thought he could get away with it.  If he can get away with treason, why not hit-and-run?

Go bicyclists!

Who’s surprised?  Note: Denying the obvious is considered something of a virtue in his sphere.

I love it when people who should know better try the Bart Simpson defense: ‘I didn’t do it!’ or ‘It wasn’t me, man!’

I don’t love it so much when I realize they often get away with it…

Um, sobriety test?

Holy crap this is Ted Kennedy at chappaquidick all over again.

First, Novak needs to have his licence suspended pending a re-test or at least an eye exam if we are to take him at his word. What’s the age that mandatory annual re-testing takes place? (and does it in Washington)

Second, if the press can dig up an article where he talks about hating pedestrians within a 2 hour span, why can’t they manange the same degree of research when talking to the men who are running for president?

Comment #7: kodiak  on  07/23  at  02:42 PM

If the eyewitnesses are on-the-mark, he needs to be charged with attempted vehicular manslaughter in addition to leaving the scene of an accident.

Comment #8: Scott  on  07/23  at  02:54 PM

Actually, it doesn’t any more—that requirement was eliminated last year.  Never mess with the senior citizen’s lobby.

One small correction: the word is, the person Novak hit was a pedestrian (crossing at a crosswalk with the walk sign); the bicyclist in the story was a bike commuter who chased down Novak to tell him to stop.

Comment #9: cminus  on  07/23  at  03:01 PM

These right-wing scumbags will say or do anything at any time to maintain what they perceive as their comfort. Fucking shitheels.

Comment #10: PhysioProf  on  07/23  at  03:03 PM

Hopefully the pedestrian wasn’t seriously injured, and Novak will be prosecuted for his attempted crime.  What the hell, he thinks he can get away with anything, and when he gets caught, he just claims ignorance.  I’m beginning to see a pattern.

I suppose if Novak gets indicted, Bush can pardon him.  Rule of law, my ass.

How many times has an insect splattered on your windshield without your being aware?  Robert Novak is a national treasure- lay off!

Comment #12: JL  on  07/23  at  03:27 PM

The degree of these guys NOT being in the reality-based community is scary.

Comment #13: Samantha Vimes  on  07/23  at  03:29 PM

Nice to know he brings to his personal life every bit of the honesty and scrupulous concern for others that he practices in his journalism.

Comment #14: Bitter Scribe  on  07/23  at  03:38 PM

Well, he didn’t shoot somebody in the face, and despite the obvious reckless disregard for a human being and gross negligence on his part, I’ll lay five to one odds that he’ll totally get away with it and his insurance company will pay a pittance to the poor victim who will probably be left with a lifetime injury.

Comment #15: Mezosub  on  07/23  at  03:46 PM

You really don’t have to “see” anything to know your stiffly sprung and extremely rigid sports car has hit something. I’ve driven more than my fair share of Corvettes and I can guarantee you he knew he’d hit something.

I’ve also been cited by police more than my fair share of times (although never for hit and run), but they always made me sit in back.

Comment #16: Sarcastro  on  07/23  at  03:55 PM

Bob Novak footage found! Must credit Auguste!

(They don’t make Corvettes like they used to.)

My God, some of the Politico comments are disturbing.

I see the Liberal Blood thirty smell the fresh blood lap dogs as usual are out there blasting Novak or any Conservative no matter what thee issue small or large . Even before the facts are known . Even by a Liberal former Proscesutor here ..... He reminds me of the liberal DA in the Duke Players were not Guity scam to get relected in a black n-hood . DC is all Libearl ! If Novak is guilty .......fine . Clinton should have kicked out for lying like Nixon was !!! This reminds me of the MAIN STREAM MEDIA TELLING US Bush , Chaney , Scooter Liddy and Karl Rove outed the meaningless CIA office worker when it was always Colon Powell’s lap dog Dick Armitage known for a year before the Special JERK OFF was hired . He was gotten for a mis-statement among Thousands , 78 Million dollars later and three years . No liberal in the media said I am sorry . Wouldn’t it be interesting if the man he hit was a J walker I see in DC all the time personally . I don’t believe Novah hit him on purpose because he thought he was a Oboma supporter ! “

“If this had been a certain ultra-liberal Democratic senator instead of Novak, the headline would read: “Obama raises pedestrian from the dead”.”

“Citations are issued, in this country, with the presumption of innocence.

Mr. Novak, if he desires, will have his day in court where he’s presumed innocent unless (not until) he’s proven guilty, oh thou of the left-wing lynch-mob.

Nooses are unacceptable unless fashioned for white (or red-) necks, is that it?” <—Except that the presumption of innocence does NOT apply outside a court of law.

You might be jumping to conclusions there:

D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter said the victim was taken to George Washington University hospital with minor injuries.

Emphasis mine.

Comment #19: Dana  on  07/23  at  05:42 PM

Isn’t Novak a bit…OLD… to have an obvious mid-life crisis car like a ‘Vette???

Comment #20: louise  on  07/23  at  06:07 PM

So what, Dana?

The newspaper reported that a fire department representative  stated that the victim sustained minor injuries.  Is a fire department representative a medical doctor?  Where did the fire department representative get his information?  The EMTs in the ambulance?  They’re not doctors either, and not in possession of all the medical facts so soon after an accident like this one.

Returning to the point, I’d just like to mention that just because someone doesn’t have any visible injuries on the outside of their body (lacerations, contusions, profuse bleeding from an exposed wound, etc.) by no means negates the possibility that the person could be suffering from serious internal injuries that can only be detected by extensive medical testing.

On a more personal note, when a relative was struck by an SUV whilst crossing a city street, she didn’t have so much as a bruise on the outside of her body, yet, some CT scans discovered a very serious hematoma, such that her brain was bleeding and the pressure was causing brain damage that manifested as seizures.  She couldn’t work for almost four months, and her hospital bill alone was nearly 72K.

This is not to say that I don’t think Novak’s insurance won’t pay for the victim’s medical expenses, but he strikes me as the type who would make someone sue him civilly to recover all the lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of consortium, and other damages that he inflicted, even if he did so strictly through his inattention.

Comment #21: Mezosub  on  07/23  at  06:13 PM

Count Novakula seems like the type that thinks that pesky things like “laws” are for the little people. I’ll be interested in checking out the video where someone said he looked out of sorts.

Comment #22: LanceThruster  on  07/23  at  06:26 PM

Novak: “He’s not dead, that’s the main thing.”

I’ve been hit by a car in a very similar situation (crossing at a crosswalk where I had the right of way) and I can testify that to the victim, not being dead is most certainly not “the main thing.”  It is NOT FUN to be hit by a car, regardless of how minor your injuries might be.  It is scary and it has a long term emotional effect.

Comment #23: Susan  on  07/23  at  06:34 PM

Novak could try claiming the pedestrian hit his car instead of the car hitting the pedestrian.  You know, the way that guy ran into Cheney’s shotgun…?

And then Novak can sue for damages — to his car…

Comment #24: MikeEss  on  07/23  at  06:46 PM

If the victim complains, maybe Michael Savage can tell them “You’re a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”

...

Comment #25: MikeEss  on  07/23  at  06:51 PM

And CNN reported that:

“It was a slight clipping. The pedestrian hurt his shoulder. It was a slight injury, nothing serious,” the police spokesman said.

Why is it that everyone jumps to conclusions because Mr Novak is generally conservative?

It was an accident, people, something that any one of us who drives could have tomorrow.  There are no political overtones in this.

Comment #26: Dana  on  07/23  at  08:38 PM

And, of course, Miss Spaulding’s title, “Robert Novak denies hit and run,” is completely inaccurate.  Mr Novak said that he hadn’t known that he struck the pedestrian, but in no way denied that it occurred.

Comment #27: Dana  on  07/23  at  08:40 PM

Well, as a pedestrian who was hit while obeying the walk light and using the crosswalk, I can tell you there’s no real recovering necessarily, even from “minor injuries”.  My neck will never be the same.  It just won’t.

Dana, the pedestrian was in his 60s.  If he gets pneumonia while recuperating, not that uncommon when healing from a hip injury, he could die.  Jess saying.  “Minor injuries” can have serious consequences.

I’m hoping the guy’s okay and fully recovers.  Then I hope Novak’s license is revoked.  It’s a shame the Sun-Times won’t yank him off the editorial pages.

It just boggles my mind that he would keep driving.  No sense of responsibility or decency whatsoever.

Comment #28: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  07/23  at  08:43 PM

Oh Dana, you are so cute when you turn into an apologist for the lamest sort of privilege on the right.

If it was your mother, father, daughter, son, wife, grandparent ... would these specious and tortured excuses still apply?

Didn’t know he had hit someone?  Oh puhleeze.  If so, then he is unfit to drive in any case.

Comment #29: Ms Kate  on  07/23  at  08:50 PM

Quite a few olagers have struck pedestrians.  The police usually remove the license on the spot.  Guess being Novak means Bush has your back.

Either he is lying or he didn’t know.  Either way, he should be taking the bus from now on.  Perhaps his wifey (23 yo cheerleader) can drive the car now.

Comment #30: Mold  on  07/23  at  09:10 PM

Mr Novak said that he hadn’t known that he struck the pedestrian, but in no way denied that it occurred.

So what you’re saying is, he was denying it until the press, and a witness, got involved.

Since it’s impossible he didn’t know he’d hit a guy, to say that he didn’t know is, in fact, a denial.

Comment #31: Chet  on  07/23  at  09:32 PM

If not having been convicted is sufficient moral qualification for high public office, why shouldn’t not quite having committed vehicular homicide be a sufficient qualification for being a pundit?

Comment #32: paul  on  07/23  at  10:18 PM

It was an accident, people, something that any one of us who drives could have tomorrow.

Well, not so much for those of us who yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks.  We aren’t going to have those kinds of accidents.

People who rave about pedestrians?  Maybe so.

Comment #33: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  07/24  at  11:18 AM

What Caren said, Dana; people who pay attention whilst they’re driving simply don’t have these sorts of accidents because they do things like slow down or take action to avoid the person entirely, thereby not striking the person with the vehicle.  It’s called an “exercise of reasonable care.”  The opposite of negligence.  Look it up sometime.

Oh, and I don’t care for the way that you refer to Pam as “Miss Spaulding.”  In public discourse nowadays, we refer to all women as “Ms.” whether we know their marital status or not.  The fact that you refer to her as “Miss” when she has made it amply clear in previous posts that she is married seems condescending…the way middle-aged white men in the south used to refer to adult African-American women as “girl.”  Kindly cut that out, please.  Kaythanxbai.

Comment #34: Mezosub  on  07/24  at  12:51 PM

Novak will probably point out that the pedestrain/victim is but one individual in the “nation of whiners” that Phil Gramm talks about.

Quitcher bitchen’ and walk it off! Be thankful that my paint can be rubbed out.

Comment #35: LanceThruster  on  07/24  at  12:55 PM

Mr Novak said that he hadn’t known that he struck the pedestrian

Get real, Dana. You don’t hit a person on a bicycle and have them on your hood without noticing. Don’t you consider it undignified to say nonsense like that?

Comment #36: atheist  on  07/24  at  01:15 PM

Unfortunately, it now turns out that Novak may not have seen the bicyclist depending on what kind of brain tumor he turns out to have.  It’s entirely possible that his vision is impaired because of it.

Novak may be a douchebag, but I wouldn’t wish a brain tumor on anyone.
