Saturday night straddling dork and cool

Music

I found a karaoke DJ that only has indie and punk songs.  So that’s our Saturday night plans.  Potential songs to sing:

And I made Marc promise me he’d sing this:

What, no Zombina and the Skeletones?

And the bonus nigh-incomprehensible My Teenage Stride video.

Yes, Amanda, I love you for your politics… but I adore you for your videos.  “That’s When I Reach For My Revolver”... best song ever.  Well, except for maybe “Academy Fight Song.”  And if I had to pick just two videos from all-femme trios?  Yep, that be them.

Only indie and punk? Really? But karaoke was made for the cheesy songs!

Comment #3: Erin  on  09/13  at  11:30 PM

Oh it’s still cheesy to watch music nerds nerd out.  I’ve done the other kind, a lot.  It’s time for a night with no groaners.

That’s excellent. This is karaoke where I stand a decent chance of knowing the songs.

Is that the “official” video for Rebel Girl?

Because it’s exactly like the imagery that runs through my head when I hear that song.

Well, the imagery that runs through my head when it’s not me starring in my own 70’s style exploitation/martial arts extravaganza complete with faux Japanese “teriaki” font lettering.  Somewhere between Pam Grier and Cynthia Rothrock.

Okay, this is the second time I’ve done this in response to you posting a video.  The first time, actually, it was the *other* video on YouTube for “Rebel Girl” (the awesome Chinese ballet).  But!

I played the first video, and thought, “Man, I’ve heard this song.  I think I really like this band.  Who is this?  ... wtf this is Sleater-Kinney?”  Similarly, it ended with “wtf this is Bikini Kill?” last time.  They’re bands I had recommended to hell and back when I was in high school, so I never listened to them because my friends liked them.

So I’m gonna go see what Sleater-Kinney stuff I can dig up on yon internet.

Has anyone ever mentioned that Sleater-Kinney Road has two exits off the 5 freeway in Olympia?

So, you hung out with people you didn’t trust.  Nice.

SK: Rickenbacker and….Dynelectro?  Cooooool.

And it’s “I-5” in local parlance.  We don’t do the “the NNN” highway nomenclature here in WA.

Well, yeah.  It was high school.

And I was a teenager and really susceptible to thinking that anything that’s hyped a lot must suck.

God, I would KILL to do Sleater-Kinney at karaoke. The cheesy standards are all good and well, but one can only do ‘Love Shack’ so many times.

Comment #11: Ursula  on  09/14  at  02:40 PM

It does not straddle the line.  Karaoke is always on the dork side. It’s like writing fiction - unless people are paying you, it’s just a form of masturbation.

Then again, I find myself wearing a thumb-drive around my neck, so I am hardly in a position to lecture about being a dork.

Gosh, I have a lot of friends who I trust to be good friends but whose taste isn’t exactly my own.  I can’t see that it’s a big deal.
