Snickers and its ad agency court the homophobes - again

What is wrong with Mars, Inc./Masterfoods? Look at this Snickers commercial produced by Omnicon. The accompanying text is from AdAge critic Bob Garfield’s open letter to Omnicon CEO John Wren criticizing this tripe (h/t Joe.My.God):

In January 2007, from TBWA, New York, there was the Snickers Super Bowl ad: two auto mechanics, chewing on opposite ends of a candy bar till meeting in an accidental kiss. The incident struck them as so repulsively gay they commenced trying to cleanse themselves via a chest-hair-ripping display of manliness. The accompanying website offered alternate endings, such as one guy attacking the other with a wrench.

Now, from AMV BBDO, London, another Snickers spot, in which a butt-wiggling race walker is just too effeminate for Mr. T’s liking. The snarling scourge of all things sissified chases after the guy in a pickup. “You a disgrace to the man race!” he bellows. “It’s time to run like a real man!”—whereupon the terrorized wimp is mowed down with a candy-spewing Gatling gun and admonished to “Get some nuts!”

...This letter is to you, but it is equally to your colleagues throughout the industry. Are you so bereft, of ideas and simple humanity, that you must be reduced to stereotyping and bullying? That you must identify an “other” to ridicule, or worse? That you must build a brand on the backs of people who have harmed no one save for challenging a high-school locker-room standard of masculinity?

Bil at The Bilerico Project is incensed—“I will never buy a Snickers bar again.”

You might recall that during the last Snickers dust up, the company trotted out a spokesbot with this corporate defense:

“As with all of our Snickers advertising, our goal was to capture the attention of our core Snickers consumer, primarily 18-to-24-year-old adult males,” said a spokeswoman for Masterfoods, Alice Nathanson. “Feedback from our target consumers has been positive, and many media and Web site commentators on this year’s Super Bowl lineup ranked the commercial among this year’s best.”

As is so often the case with products like this, I already avoid them, so I can’t exactly boycott them. Of course, the company doesn’t know that…

OK, their freedom of speech has been met with my freedom of association. for whatever that’s worth.  Sancto-irritated jibber-jabber of disapproval has been sent to the Snickers folks. 

I can’t say I like/use most of their products, but I’ll miss the Bounty Bars and M&Ms;I pick up off the rack a few times a year.

This is not meant as a defense of the commercial, but apparently race-walkers get that kind of reaction a lot in real life. I don’t mean getting shot at with candy bars, of course, but morons hissing “Hey, queer,” stuff like that.

I was willing to give the Mars people the benefit of the doubt the first time. Not this time.

What truly amazes me is that they didn’t realize just how much funnier it would have been if the racewalker had been faster than Mr. T-in-a-pickup.  And they could have had him eating a Snickers while he left Mr. T in his racewalking dust.  Did the makers of this ad miss a few classes at humor college?  Did they score very low on their Standardized Humor Intelligence Test?

You know, if I were an 18-to-24-year-old male, I might be a little insulted by the automatic assumption that I’m homophobic.  But maybe it’s just me.

Bingo. And for the same reason that Miller Lite rounded up the toughest, most macho retired athletes it could find for its (wildly successful) initial ad campaign: to counteract the fear that young males would find “light” beer, or lemonade, fruity and effeminate.

This is why I couldn’t sit through an episode of “Mad Men,” no matter how much the critics luuuurve it: I just can’t stand to watch assholes being assholes.

Those Mike’s Hard Lemonade commercials were awful, and definitely enough to get me to stop drinking them. I’m surprised they don’t go for a demographic like me: young female who doesn’t like beer, but does like to hang out with young men who drink beer and have something to drink that’s a little lighter than my usual standard, whiskey and coke! It seemed like a pretty bad decision—if your drink is perceived as “girly,” why associate it with people who hate girls, rather than just market it to women? None of the binge-drinking guys I know touch the stuff, much preferring their PBR or Nati Ice for ultimate drunk potential.

Like Incertus, I don’t actually eat Snickers bars very often… but I have no problem claiming that I did and now don’t. What a stupid ad.

I was so fixated on the awfulness of the fate of the walker that I missed the description of teh rest of the commercial.  So the big ad campaign combines the appeal of the drive-by gangsta stereotype with the allure of the gay-bash?

BTW, I suspect Carl’s Jr. may have learned misogyny is bad business. In one of their recent “fake restaurant” ads, one of the women they interview about their fancy burgers said she hated Carl’s Jr because of their ads and wouldn’t want to be in one. While it isn’t a direct apology, the dramatic change in ad style and the fact they scripted or kept in (I suspect it’s all scripted) a criticism of their former ads sounds to me like they learned a lesson.

There is such a thing as bad publicity.

Carl’s Jr. is the same is Hardee’s, right?  I find their ads literally nauseating, because of the excessive zeal with which they show people eating their product.  Way too much amplified chewing and lip-smacking, and it seems like at some point in every commercial food either drips or is spilled.

Like so what, does this make Snickers and Mars evil and intolerant now. It’s an ad you dweeb. They have a right to run any ad they want, especially when they think it might affect a market. Maybe we should not only boycott them, but attack them in the streets and kill those intolerant homohobes , that’ll teach them tolerance.

Open letters ... boycotts ... mass murder ... one of these things is not like the others.

Why wouldn’t a boycott be an appropriate response to the ads?

Ummm… yes, this certainly is a case of Mars being intolerant. Evil is probably a bit strong to my taste. But depicting gunning down someone minding his own business for the crime of being unmanly - bad enough in itself, but the crime was so bad that Mr. T had to come crashing onto the street from blocks away to stop it. Powerwalking looks silly. Sure. But Mr. T is clearly a vigilante tracking down the unmanly wherever they might be lurking. Or waddling. Intolerant? Duh.

Yes, they have the right to run any ad they want. So? They think it might affect a market. Again, so? Well, hello! Turning off a noticeable chunk of the people who might, or in my case, do, buy your product counts as “affecting the market.”

It’s an offensive ad, dweeb.

you people are truly absent of humor. what if it were a chipmunk ?!  you can only see gay. so sorry for the hetrophobes they miss out on alot of real life!!!!!!!!!!!!Next I guess what is needed the guy should have dropped trow and accepted the candy annaly… with a smile..
