Spare The Rod, Jail The Everloving Shit Out Of The Child

Christian conservatives in Georgia are protesting a new law that would protect child prostitutes by giving them counseling and entering them into diversionary programs rather than imprisoning them.

But, you see, this is a huge problem.  Active intervention designed to benefit, say, a 13-year-old who started prostituting herself because her parents kicked her out of the house or because the guy down the street threatened to kill her if she didn’t go have sex with some of his friends is a terrible idea.  And why is that?

Some opponents said the bills amounted to decriminalization, which amounted to legalization. And would lead to more prostitution, not less, they said.

“Decriminalizing that means the police would have absolutely no interest in it at all,” said Sue Ella Deadwyler, who writes a Christian conservative newsletter. “They wouldn’t arrest the girls, they wouldn’t pick the girls up, they wouldn’t protect them from influence on the street from the pimps and the johns. It would be an absolute cultural upheaval in our state. Never in the United States, as far as I known, has juvenile prostitution been legalized.”

You know what would probably protect girls more than giving them a criminal record?  Arresting the people who are raping them and profiting from their rape

But no, that’s crazy talk.  Instead, apparently, the only thing that stands as a bulwark between a flood of teenagers deciding to go out and get beaten by pimps so that they can make $100 a night is the threat of arrest.  After all, it’s working so well now, you know?

I can’t help but point out that they’re probably motivated by the same thing that causes some groups to stone rape victims to death, which is this belief that a woman de-virginized has no value at all.

I don’t get it.  How is this decriminalizing prostitution?  From the description it sounds like the girls are still arrested but instead of being prosecuted they will receive social services.  It’s sort of like sending drug addicts to rehab instead of jail but the police are still involved initially.  I just ... I mean ... how can they hate women/girls so much?

My god. They really hate everyone but the Precious, Sweet White Fetuii don’t they?

This is just plain, pure madness. This is “Take Old Yeller out behind the woodshed and blow his poor, rabid brains out” madness. People making these kind of lunatic arguments should have to wear a sign warning everyone to stay the hell away.

The only problem here is that we haven’t privatized the prison systems sufficiently.  Once a company can make $10k+ a girl, locking up minors for prostitution, we should see a huge uptick in arrests and prosecutions.  Sticking a legion of 13-year-olds in privately run jails will stimulate the economy and clean up the streets.  It will also make the 13-year-old prostitute a rare and valuable commodity - like heroin - and increasing a prostitute’s street value will price a lot of the riff-raff out of the market.  Free Market capitalism will then step in and resolve the problem.

Besides, seriously, if you’re going to shoot meth while having sex with an under aged prostitute, shouldn’t you at least have the confidence that you’re engaging in an activity of the social elite, rather than lowering yourself into the ghetto?  Massive incarceration of minors will really add some class to what has historically been an entirely too accessible institution.

And having the middle class shoulder the tax burden for throwing the lower class in jail, while the upper class turns an obscene profit is good for the economy.

“Jail the 13-year-old tempresses!”

I mean, seriously, how much more transparent can their perversions get?

Comment #6: RickMassimo  on  02/02  at  01:32 PM

Neocons’ “tough on crime” stance even applies to 13-year-olds? Incredible. I mean, if you take the image of the stereotypical prisoner - a tough, remorseless, grim male - it’s easy to see why people think rehabilitation is useless. They’re wrong, in no small part because not all prisoners are like that, but at least I can understand their thinking. But declaring that it’s better to lock up a child than rehabilitate them?

...Incredible.

Seriously, my mind is so blown I have to double post. Not all adult prostitutes are doing what they’re doing by choice. A surprising number of them are victims of human trafficking, most of the others are forced into that line of work by drug addiction or boyfriends who turn out to be pimps, among many other things. But because they’re fallen women, no longer pure, conservatives don’t give a shit about them. They might as well be common criminals, even if they were kidnapped and forced into prostitution, as far as conservatives care.

I mean, that’s their feelings about adult prostitutes. But to believe that a child is solely responsible for becoming a prostitute and should thus be locked up?

...Incredible.

Comment #8: Triplanetary  on  02/02  at  02:44 PM

There are a lot of things I’d like to say here, most on the subject of how dumb it is to try to apply Victorian sexual morals nowadays, and how victim-blaming does not solve the problem.  Even on the topic of rehabilitation after conviction is a sentencing question, not a legality question..  But I seriously doubt I could be coherent, so I’m just going to go dig the cat out of the laundry and weep for humanity a bit.

Comment #9: fluffster  on  02/02  at  03:23 PM

But what if the child prostitutes are white?

Surely they wouldn’t want THEM locked up.

Comment #10: Mark  on  02/02  at  03:24 PM

Saying that you’re saving child prostitutes from the streets when you throw them in jail is like saying you’re saving your kitten from the street dogs when you throw it into the lion’s cage.

Comment #11: Blue Jean  on  02/02  at  03:30 PM

Never in the United States, as far as I known, has juvenile prostitution been legalized.

And it still won’t be legal. Instead of locking up the victim, the criminals, i.e. the Johns and pimps, will be put in prison.

Comment #12: Olivia  on  02/02  at  03:37 PM

Am super late to this but considering the alarming statistics of rape in juvenile facilities, you could argue that the fundies want these girls locked up so they will have easy access to them.

Comment #13: DC Fem  on  02/02  at  04:14 PM

The thing is people (read: assholes) don’t think of pubescent children as children anymore. Once she’s bleeding, clearly she’s a woman who has all the sophistication and insert other tired misogynistic trope here as those 40 year old cougars. Duh!

Back when I was a teen I heard so much anti-teen rhetoric all around me that I’m convinced it’s a widespread problem. Hell, even the original V (from 1983) has a strong ‘teens are worthless idiots who are sexy and will ruin your family for being the sexy’ message.

Heh, I’ve been appalled by our society’s treatment of teens since I was one (although I never encountered anything as bad this).  Sometimes I’m a little too vocal about it, and my brother once jokingly assured me that someday I would lose my “pro-teen attitude”.  Fortunately, that hasn’t happened yet (although I am still pretty young).

You’re looking at this from the wrong angle. If we rehabilitate prostitutes, how are those guys going to get laid?

Comment #17: Soren  on  02/02  at  05:56 PM

Hey, these are the same people who think that if medical care is affordable people will start overusing it by leaps and bounds. Because sitting in a waiting room, getting stabbed with needles or cut up with sharp knives is another thing that everyone would want to spend their time doing if only it cost less.

Comment #18: paul  on  02/02  at  06:55 PM

Ms. Sue Ella’s argument is not only based on a bill that doesn’t exist, it’s a deliberately wrong reading. If she had any of the human empathy to which she pretends, she’d be proposing changing the bill to block the protections for pimps and johns she claims to be worried about. Instead, she’d prefer nothing be done to help these girls.

I’m always amazed how easily fundamentalists learn to hide their true beliefs. It reminds me of a child pretending he doesn’t dissect squirrels in the back yard.

I seem to recall something about Jesus ministering to prostitutes, but then, Christ did a lot of unchristian things.

Comment #19: Master Mahan  on  02/02  at  07:11 PM

So….apparently the only reason police might be motivated to get 13 year old girls off the streets and out of prostitution is the possibility of another high five for arresting one of the little Jezebels.  Because, according to these fundies, god knows they couldn’t possibly move themselves to be concerned about their welfare otherwise.

Comment #20: jennygadget  on  02/02  at  07:17 PM

“Decriminalizing that means the police would have absolutely no interest in it at all . . . “They wouldn’t arrest the girls, they wouldn’t pick the girls up, they wouldn’t protect them from influence on the street from the pimps and the johns,” is really strange, not to mention very insulting to the police. Apparently the only way to deal with a socal problem is to arrest people (jail the overweight!), and the problem with diversionary programs is that they demoralize the police.

The little 13 year old sluts deserve the punishment, presumably.

“Decriminalizing that means the police would have absolutely no interest in it at all,”

God knows the only reason *I* care when little girls get raped is ‘cause it’s illegal! And I’m sure that police officers, many of whom have kids of their own, will totally be 100% cool with watching teenagers get shuffled around and fucked as long as it’s not breaking any laws!

If anything this would motivate me, if I were a cop, to pick up these kids a lot more often. Maybe I’m giving the police too much credit, but surely not *all* of them prefer slapping handcuffs on 13-year-olds and jailing them to actually, yanno, helping them? It would rid me of any reservations about making an “arrest” if said arrest were in name only and resulted in actual assistance rather than a longer record and slightly more pissed-off pimp.

(Feel free to slap down my optimism now.)

Comment #23: Bagelsan  on  02/02  at  11:43 PM

but then, Christ did a lot of unchristian things.

Did you know that that man, to the best of my knowledge, never killed a single brown person or invaded another country? Sure, his modern fundie family tries to sweep that under the rug (so embarrassing!) and they still like to pretend he was macho like the rest, but even they know Jesus was a total squeemish pussy irl. :p (His 2000-year-long eulogy has turned into a hell of a game of telephone: “What? ‘Throw the slutty bitches in jail’? No, I said ‘love thy neighbor’! It’s not like those sound the same in Aramaic either!”)

Comment #24: Bagelsan  on  02/02  at  11:51 PM

Teens are great. I don’t know what happens to a lot of them as they grow up.

Comment #25: Alix  on  02/03  at  03:27 AM

ZOMG! I didn’t even know the police COULD arrest underage prostitutes. Because… children CAN’T GIVE CONSENT! Therefore they are not prositutes, they are rape victims, albeit rape victims who get money.

I mean, that’s the only logical reading of the laws to me. If you’re under 18 (or whatever the legal age of consent is in an area), you should automatically be considered a sex crime victim and not a prostitute. Or else age-of-consent laws aren’t to protect all children, but only the children of the “right” people. Which is probably how the Christian conservatives would like it to be.
