Next entry: When the mask slips Previous entry: The selfish revolution

The all-or-nothing mentality

Did you hear that Michelle Obama ordered a single meal that was unhealthy?  I know!  This is quite possibly the worst bout of hypocrisy ever from a major political figure and certainly reason for her to shut up forever about how kids should eat their vegetables.  By the way, telling kids to eat their vegetables has magically, throw the magical corrupting power of touching the Obamas, gone from something that was about as uncontroversial as telling kids to pick up their room to quite possibly the worst thing a human being could ever do.  I suppose now patriotic Americans should not let their kids eat anything that comes directly from the ground at all, just to be safe.  Yeah, that zucchini looks harmless enough on the plate, but I've heard that consuming that shit will turn you into a liberal, and better dead than red and all that.

Sure, some may say that Obama has, in the past, never once suggested that occasional treats are forbidden to herself or her family, or even that occasional treats are bad for you.  In fact, some might point out that her "everything in moderation" attitude closely resembles the advice offered by medical professionals when it comes to eating healthy.  Some even suggest that the occasional treat keeps you from feeling deprived, and allows you to maintain a most-of-the-time healthy diet.

But those people are nuts!  Everyone knows that this is America, and in America, it's all or nothing.  Your weight should be either ballooning rapidly or you should be losing dramatic amounts of weight in short periods of time, a la "The Biggest Loser".  Screw this "healthy lifestyle" crap.  Only hippies do that.  You should either be eating the typical American diet of junk food all the time, until one day you vow to lose weight, go on a fad diet, lose a bunch of weight while being angry and undernourished and deprived, slip up one day and eat a donut, decide you're a terrible sinner and give up completely on eating well and instead go right back to eating crap three meals a day.  Anything else is un-American.

Which is why all these wingnuts are up in arms.  Michelle Obama is breaking the rules!  The only way to feel after you eat a treat is to beat yourself up, decide that you're a sinner beyond redemption, and give up trying to eat healthy forevermore.  But Obama doesn't seem to play that game.  She occasionally has a treat and then goes right back to promoting healthy eating.  She planted a vegetable garden at the White House, and the White House chef uses it for all the big state dinners and what not they have going on there.  It was fun reading some of the menus! I read about potato and eggplant salad, red lentil soup, chopped salad, tuna tartare, petite filet, pea salad, ravioli, wild ramp puree, pear salad, orange glaze carrots with mushrooms, roasted potato dumplings (what a good way to reduce the fat in them!), chick peas and okra, green curry prawns, jicama with oranges, herb green ceviche, and beef with mole. All very tasty sounding, but alas, not a chocolate shake or French fry to be seen.

It was actually kind of fun for me, would-be foodie that I am, to watch some of the videos of White House chef Cris Comerford  prepare state dinners.  This one was cool:

I have a sneaking suspicion that Michelle Obama is who she says she is: someone who takes exercise and nutrition seriously, and because she takes it seriously, allows herself the occasional treat and shuns the binge-and-purge norm that's foisted on us by the junk food and diet industries.  I suspect she doesn't eat hamburgers every day.  I suspect all this because as a member in good standing of the liberal elite, I know my people.  And that's just how we are.  I'm not only like that, but a whole bunch of my friends are, too.  We eat crap on occasion, and it's okay, because we mostly eat well.  I also suspect it because, let's face it, Michelle Obama looks like she's a frequent gym attendee.  In theory, one could be hitting the gym as much as she clearly does while eating like crap.  But I'm really hard-pressed to see how, especially at her age.  I'm a lot younger than her, and I've eaten junk food for three meals a day for even just two to three days, and even that was enough to make the return to the gym less than ideal.

In fact, I'd argue that Obama is a really good model for getting out of the toxic American binge-and-purge approach to food.  She's modeling what non-disordered eating looks like.  I think the reason it's so shocking is that Americans have such a disordered approach to food that we can't even deal with it when we see someone who lives the "healthy most of the time, treats occasionally" lifestyle recommended by, oh, every science-based nutrition program imaginable.

Looks like a double post.

I agree with all of this.

In addition, though, conservatives really like to scrutinize every action the Obamas take, to a degree that previous presidents have never been subjected to. Golfing, making both official and unofficial visits to various places, bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia - these are things pretty much every president in memory has done, but when Obama does them, it’s further proof that he’s an America-hating failure!

”...these are things pretty much every president in memory has done, but when Obama does them, it’s further proof that he’s an America-hating failure!”

Let us not forget that B. HUSSEIN Obama married that crazy hippie-chick harpy with the toned arms who’s trying to load all good Americans into cattle cars to take to FEMA camps where we’ll all be forced to eat quiche and arugula salads with imported balsamic vinaigrette dressing while washing it all down with some evil craft brew made in the back of some cool local restaurant, instead of eating a thick, bacon-wrapped steak, some mashed potatoes with sodium-heavy and fat-ridden gravy, and washing it down with a Bud Lite, like all good Americans would do.

This country has seriously gone off the rails, and we need somebody like Michele Bachmann to put us back on the path to righteousness…and real American food…

I’m just glad that a bastion of radical-leftist liberality like the Washington Post is watching everything Mrs. Obama eats so we can call her out on her egregious hypocrisy…

Comment #3: MikeEss  on  07/11  at  06:45 PM

Yeah, if Laura Bush told kids to eat their veggies, it’d be staggeringly uncontroversial. But Michelle Obama is not only a Democrat, but blackity, and hence, OMGWTFBBQ.

Comment #4: Scott  on  07/11  at  06:46 PM

@4

Another problem with Michelle Obama’s healthy eating initiative is that it doesn’t provide enough opportunities to bomb brown people, arrest brown people, or destroy the livelihoods of brown people. Why can’t she back something productive, like arresting brown people for non-violent drug offenses?

Comment #5: Triplanetary  on  07/11  at  06:54 PM

I’m a fan of Ms. Comerford’s work. She may well have been the best hiring of the entire Bush Administration (She was hired as WH Executive Chef by Laura Bush in 2005). She teamed up with Bobby Flay on an episode of Iron Chef America last year to compete against Emeril Lagasse and Mario Batali. Comerford and Flay emerged triumphant.

Comment #6: DTGslu2K  on  07/11  at  06:55 PM

This all boils down to white/christian (read: Real Americans) saying “I will NEVER do what a black person tells me to do!”.

They will never acknowledge that a black person could ever have any sort of authority over them. Even if its just a FUCKING SUGGESTION, they see it as a black person telling them what to do.

Comment #7: Mark  on  07/11  at  07:05 PM

@Triplanetary: Actually the Clinton White House was treated to very similar, ridiculous levels of scrutiny, from the idiocy of Travelgate in the early days to the lies about removing “W” from the keyboards at the end.  Having any sort of Democrat in the White House is apparently some sort of fundamental violation of all that is most sacred about the Greatest Nation on Earth®.

There is something new here and it, naturally, involves race. I’ve always suspected that much of the horror about Michelle Obama’s dietary suggestions involves some folks’ hatred of having a black person tell them what to do ( see that Mark beat me to this observation).

Comment #8: Ben Alpers  on  07/11  at  07:36 PM

@MikeEss: Any idea where I can go to get on that train. That actually sounds kind of awesome.

No one can or should ever expect anyone to eat healthy every single second of every single day? It’s sort of why we call things like donuts and candy “treats” and not “diet”. Yet the right drags out the nirvana fallacy again. “You might want to eat something besides arugula every so often, so you may as well just eat deep fried Twinkies and wash them down deep fried Mountain Dew!”

Comment #9: JThompson  on  07/11  at  07:47 PM

Actually, that’s almost exactly what I had for lunch yesterday. Oops.

Why can’t she back something productive, like arresting brown people for non-violent drug offenses??

That’s Eric Holders’ department:

Just days after the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) insisted that there is no medical value to marijuana, the White House appeared to contradict the position, saying in a report that there may actually be “some” medical value to “individual components of the cannabis plant” after all.

The statement was just a small part of the Office on National Drug Control Policy’s yearly update on the progress of the drug war and its goals moving forward. Overall, the document only serves to affirm the federal prohibition of marijuana and what it calls “‘medical’ marijuana,” which it still views as illegitimate.

But a single passage, under their “facts about marijuana,” seems to loosen a bit from the generation-old line that there is no value to cannabis whatsoever.

“While there may be medical value for some of the individual components of the cannabis plant, the fact remains that smoking marijuana is an inefficient and harmful method for delivering the constituent elements that have or may have medicinal value,” the report says.

Still, today’s medical marijuana patients and proprietors don’t have much to cheer in the report, as it goes on to insist that smoking the marijuana plant itself is harmful and dangerous, especially for teens, and perpetuates the largely discredited “gateway drug” theory.

You laugh now, but you won’t be laughing when a phalanx of jackbooted gov’t thugs accompanies Michelle Obama to your home where she will personally smack the cheeseburger out of your hand and order your backyard grill melted down for scrap.

Also, what Mark said.

“OMGWTFBBQ”

I’m totally stealing that…

Sort of OT, but I am so entranced by the idea of potato and eggplant salad.  I did a little desultory surfing around, but can’t find a recipe.  Anybody know of one I could try?

What kind of effect has TV Chefs / shows such as Jamie Oliver had on how american children eat??
In the UK they mad a big fuss about him but he didn’t really do that much since kids eat what they’re given, if they get served a burger at lunch they eat it, if they get served a healthier alternative, they might not enjoy it as much but still eat it as they won’t go without lunch…

This would be funnier if Obama hadn’t announced that he’s gonna gut Social Security today.

Her husband is trying to steal my SS (and he’ll get it) and force me to wait two more years before I can go on Medicare, if I’m still alive.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about Michelle Obama’s dietary choices.

And she’s a liberal now?  Not if she’s anywhere near her husband’s ideology she ain’t.  Just because a bunch of crazy cons hate you, doesn’t mean you’re a liberal, nor does it mean I owe you a defense, nor does it mean I give a shit.

I give a shit about surviving.  And her husband has just vowed to make that much more difficult.

Comment #17: Daisy  on  07/11  at  09:52 PM

Ok, I could overlook it when Obama ordered some fancy mustard.  But a woman eating a treat without being consumed with guilt?  That’s just too much.  I need a fainting couch, stat!

Comment #18: bananacat  on  07/11  at  10:18 PM

In a sane world people would say well, whatever Michelle Obama’s doing, it’s clearly working out p. well, since she is obviously in pretty decent shape.

But no, we’re in the stupid fucking world of crazy shit, where everything’s stupid and crazy all the fucking time.

Comment #19: Dan  on  07/11  at  10:30 PM

@bananacat—exactly.  God forbid a woman eat fatty food without it being a PR stunt (a la the skinny actress who demonstrates that she’s a real person by eating, or talking about eating, cheeseburgers or pasta) or the beginning of a shame spiral.  Until Yoplait makes a cheeseburger flavor, we’re not supposed to eat it without self-flagellation.

Comment #20: Kit-Kat  on  07/11  at  11:45 PM

I’m also guessing that, like most healthy eaters, Mrs. Obama didn’t eat every last french fry on that 1700 calorie plate.  People who aren’t food-obsessed can stop eating when they’re full, even if the plate isn’t clean yet.

Comment #21: gretchen  on  07/12  at  02:00 AM

anoNY2, if all you can come up with is an extraordinarily stupid comment, it would probably be best for you not to say anything at all.

Comment #22: Tyro  on  07/12  at  08:07 AM

Do we really have to do this?  Can’t we just be a reasonable country for once and not flip out about this?  Is that so hard?

Comment #23: preying mantis  on  07/12  at  08:39 AM

Amanda has demonstrated here time and again that one doesn’t have to have to be a top chef or cook to eat healthy, so I don’t see your point, anoNY2.

As for the bottle of wine, it isn’t the product, it was the fact that it cost 350$ and demonstrated the cluelessness of Paul “Voucher to pay for insurance instead of Medicare but it’s still Medicare” who thinks that putting sacrifice on the backs of the poor and elderly is not only good politics, but good public policy as well.

Comment #24: Dark Avenger Guardian Chow Mein  on  07/12  at  08:45 AM

@anoNY2:  A valiant attempt at trolling, but unfortunately unsuccessful.  While there are legitimate reasons for many people being unable to eat healthy, particularly the poor, for most people it’s just laziness.  And let it be noted that that includes myself.  There’s nothing stopping me from cooking for myself and eating healthy except inertia on my part, and I’m not going to criticize Obama for suggesting that people need to eat healthier, just because I don’t particularly want to go to the trouble.

Comment #25: progrocker  on  07/12  at  08:50 AM

Right, progrocker.  I’m the same way.  I could cook more and healthier and I often resolve to, but unfortunately I am often too lazy.  Sometimes people genuinely are too busy or too poor to afford the kitchen space and tools and such, but a lot of the time when people don’t eat well, it is because of factors that CAN be influenced by education.  We shouldn’t always be nay-saying efforts to influence the culture around food.

Comment #26: GumbyAnne  on  07/12  at  09:53 AM

At least the top commenters on the WP are correctly pointing out this idiocy of this.

Still, I have no energy to register just to point out what a great job the reporter is doing keeping “those people” in their place.  You wouldn’t want them to get uppity.

Comment #27: cynickal  on  07/12  at  10:47 AM

Oh, yes . I hadn’t thought of it in quite that way but that’s exactly it.  And it’s incredibly refreshing to see.

Comment #28: brenda  on  07/12  at  12:09 PM

@anoNYC: It’s not the wine (which was a pretty obvious violation of Congressional ethics laws, of course), but the company.  Bad, cruel, stupid people spending time with other bad, cruel, stupid people.

Comment #29: Punditus Maximus  on  07/12  at  01:23 PM

Comment #27: GumbyAnne on 07/12 at 09:53 AM

And maybe we could make it easier for everyone to eat healthy food by demanding it more as ready-to-eat or fast food.  If more people who have the time to cook do it in a healthy way, then that changes the tastes of those who eat it.

Make healthy meals “normal.”

Comment #30: oldfeminist  on  07/12  at  02:49 PM

Mrs. O got her burger from the new Dupont Circle location of Shake Shack, owned by chef Danny Meyer who also owns the Union Square Cafe. There are long lines in NYC for these burgers and they are pretty tasty. I think the fries and burgers are better (and less pricey) at In-n-Out but SS is pretty good and I love the pagers they give you that vibrate when your order is ready!

Remember when another black lady (Oprah) said she doesn’t eat burgers? The beef industry sued her. I thought having a burger was as patriotic as wearing a flag pin.

Comment #31: BerkeleyMom  on  07/12  at  02:50 PM

While there are legitimate reasons for many people being unable to eat healthy, particularly the poor, for most people it’s just laziness.

I agree with GumbyAnne that education is important, but I am also sick of the shaming for supposed “laziness.”  It’s true that when I get home, I’d rather heat something in the microwave than spend an hour cooking something and cleaning up the mess, but I also only have a few hours between the time I come home and the time I go to bed.  I need that time to relax and unwind after work.  It’s not lazy to be burnt out after working 8+ hours, 5 days a week, and it’s truly American (in all the worst possible ways) to shit on people for not being on their feet, working themselves to death for all of their 16-18 waking hours.

Comment #32: keshmeshi  on  07/12  at  03:21 PM

Remember when another black lady (Oprah) said she doesn’t eat burgers? The beef industry sued her.

They sued her not because she said she didn’t eat burgers, but because she was fanning the flames about BSE and promoting people who were spreading complete bullshit about the safety of the beef supply. Given Oprah’s support of pseudoscientific bullshit woo, it could have been corn or carrots that caught her attention instead if there was someone she listened to who was babbling on about it.
