The award for best post title goes to…

FireDogLake’s Swopa, for this:

John McCain Orders Up an Acme Self-Hoisting Petard

With all the shakeups since he entered the presidential race, it’s been hard to know who’s running John McCain’s campaign… but I’m gradually becoming convinced that it’s Wile E. Coyote.

The whole thing is good, and calls attention to a new Obama campaign-related web site: Low Road Express. The conventional wisdom used to be that the fact-checking approach to fighting smears was useless because it lends credence to them, but the internet’s the perfect medium to reverse that concept; if any campaign can do it, it looks like being Obama’s.

Love the bit about fighting smears, but must you promote Swopa’s inaccurate understanding of the expression “hoisted by your own petard?”

It’s McCain that’ll be hoisted, not the petard, so a self-hoisting petard doesn’t make any sense; unless “self” appears here as an awkward way of saying “person,” akin to the “self” in “self help” and different from the “self” in “self-cleaning ovens,” which is exactly what a “self-hoisting” petard sounds like.

Oh, and dear people of Pandagon, if you encounter the ubiquitous (and dreadful) “hoisted ON his own petard,” please, for the love of all that is right with the world, beat the speaker to death.  Preferably with their own shoes.

Actually, you’re right, and I hadn’t noticed that. I don’t believe, however, that Swopa’s title represents the misuse of the expression but the torture of the word “self.” In my head, I was reading it as a short way of saying “petard designed for easy self-hoisting” as in a petard which allows oneself to hoist oneself more easily than the standard petard. Although even that doesn’t work, since any petard is by definition an easily hoisting one, unless it’s a dud.

Sounds more like the work of Daffy, not Wile E- constantly splutteringly angry at a calm and cool competitor who outwits him at every turn, and utterly despicable…

Raise your hand if you also can’t wait for Porky to come out in November and declare, “That’s All, Folks!”

I’m waiting for McShame to hold up a sign saying, “How about ending this campaign before I lose all credibility?”

Overtly using race in a political campaign is like poison gas. It may work, buts its also just as likely the winds are going to blow it back to your front lines, killing you in the process.

IOW, McCain is getting incredibly desperate very early.

No, no. Barack Obama is Bugs Bunny, Hillary Clinton in the primaries was Daffy Duck.

John McCain is Elmer Fudd.

There’s letters seal’d, and my two schoolfellows, Whom I will trust as I will adders fang’d— They bear the mandate, they must sweep my way And marshal me to knavery. Let it work; For ‘tis the sport to have the enginer Hoist with his own petard, an’t shall go hard But I will delve one yard below their mines And blow them at the moon.

A “petard” is a bomb.  In a siege, combat engineers would dig below the wll of a city, plant a petard, explode it, and the way would be open for an infantry attack.  All petards are necessarily self-hoisting.  A common response was countermining—blowing up the other side’s mine before it was ready . . .

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead, anywway.

Self-hoisting petard works.  Don’t think of it as a petardt aht hoists itself but as a petard designed to be used in self-hoisting.  Consider pruning shears, which are designed for pruning.  Self-pruning shears wouldn’t prune themselves, hat would make no sense.  They’d be a haircomb for Ents.
