Next entry: President Renegade Previous entry: Reagan Always Wins.  Always.

The future of the Republican party?

This guy and the McCain/Palin rally mobs are all that will be left of the GOP if they don’t remake their party ASAP.  Back in October Michigan Messenger uncovered the fact that at least two Republican precinct delegates were tied to white supremists. One of them was Randy Gray of Midland. Well, since the election didn’t go his way, Gray decided to put on the sheets and hold a protest of the country’s election of its first black president.

An image of Gray has now surfaced in the Midland Daily News (online edition at OurMidland.com). The newspaper said the image shows Gray, 30, protesting the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States. And to top it off, Gray is dressed in his KKK robes while standing at a busy intersection in Midland. His protest was held in front of Garber Chevrolet at the corner of Eastman Avenue and Saginaw Road in Midland and lasted 15 or 20 minutes.

Police told the Midland Daily News that Gray was exercising his First Amendment rights. What was Gray’s protest about?

I feel white people feel more oppressed,” he said. “We’re basically told as white people we can’t have any organizations. We’re ruled by communists. “It’s not just about Barack Obama. It goes deeper than that.”

According to the Midland Daily News report, Gray then went on to say the election of Obama to the presidency was the impetus for him to make the walk on Wednesday. The report fails to note that Gray is Michigan GOP precinct delegate for Midland.

W. T. F ?!

Comment #2: Kristen from MA  on  11/10  at  06:50 PM

Funny me. I thought the KKK qualified as a “white organization”.  I didn’t realize that it had been banned, that they are not allowed to meet, to share ideas or to establish groups.

Oh wait..

Comment #3: melaka  on  11/10  at  06:53 PM

It does make one wonder if they can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Somebody should tell him that the hood makes him look like an even bigger prick ... unless that is the point of wearing it.

Comment #6: Ms Kate  on  11/10  at  07:12 PM

Oh, and isn’t wearing white like living in a glass house ... or were there no convenient dog park garbage cans nearby?

Comment #7: Ms Kate  on  11/10  at  07:13 PM

I always thought the hood made them seem very “pope-like”. Ironic, since they don’t have a very high opinion of catholics.

I was going to say 30 seems young to be an employed racist, but looking at his video, he appears to be pushing 40. Is he lying about his age, or just suffering the effects of constant, irrational fear? Also, broken government our forefathers would be proud of.

Comment #10: Foster  on  11/10  at  07:33 PM

NO white organizations? How about….eveything?

Such people tend to also be pacifists.

Comment #14: Alex, FCD  on  11/10  at  07:50 PM

You can’t judge a party by the most extreme of its supporters.  Farrakhan said in the last day or two that Obama was wonderful.  So what?

Comment #15: MIddleageLiberal  on  11/10  at  08:02 PM

It’s a shame Fred Phelps wasn’t standing on the sidewalk next to him.  Now THAT’s America!

In Midland, Michigan? Only if you bused them in from Ann Arbor.

Comment #17: mythago  on  11/10  at  08:12 PM

You can’t judge a party by the most extreme of its supporters.

Wouldn’t a GOP precinct delegate be better characterized as a party representative vs. an extreme?

Comment #18: ema  on  11/10  at  08:16 PM

Something that has always confused me about the Klan.  Where do they get those outfits?  That thing looks to be professionally made.  Do they go to specialty tailors, or are there off the rack Klan robe boutiques?

Comment #19: Fatman  on  11/10  at  08:26 PM

Fatman, head to the Mother Jones website for answers - click or search on “Aryan Outfitters”.

Comment #20: Ms Kate  on  11/10  at  08:27 PM

I have to say, I like it better when the KKK don’t cover their faces.  That way they can be appropriately mocked.  I mean, jeez, if you’re a backwards idiot ignorant fuckhead, at least have the courage to show your face in public as a backwards idiot ignorant fuckhead.

Comment #21: LauraB  on  11/10  at  08:31 PM

Chhhht! Stop telling them how to fix this…

On the contrary.  We want them to fix this.  Because “fixing this” means moving away from the repressive party of bigots that they’ve been for so long.

For decades now, Republicans have been running on fear of the Other: brown people, gays, libruls, etc.  Oh, sure, taxes come and warmongering goes, but fear of the Other has been their stock-in-trade.  Vote for us, or the Brown People will invade your neighborhood.  Vote for us or the Gays will take over your church’s Bible school classes.

And this time, it didn’t work.  It didn’t work because the Other is now a large portion of the electorate, and because people are more familiar - and thus more comfortable - with the Other these days.

For a while, they’re not going to admit this.  They’re going to make Bush and/or Palin and/or McCain their scapegoat.  They’re going to blame the economy.  They’re going to try to think of new tactics that will bring them back into power without requiring them to make any real changes.  And they’re going to spend some time in the wilderness as a result.  Rural, white, conservative Christians just aren’t enough of a base to win anything anymore.  Only when they change their platform to get back in step with the American mainstream will the “fix this”, and that means a GOP that doesn’t have racism, sexism, homophobia and religious bias woven into its very fabric.  Or it means a GOP superceded by a new conservative party.  Either way, it’s a good thing for this country.

Comment #22: Seraph  on  11/10  at  08:35 PM

Just curious where does it say in the article that he is GOP delegate?  or is that just more shit that you have made up. Pamsy?

@cookie:  > Just curious where does it say in the article that he is GOP delegate?  or is that just more shit that you have made up. Pamsy?

“Pamsy” did write:  “The report fails to note that Gray is Michigan GOP precinct delegate for Midland.”

Reading comprehension, anyone?

Comment #24: Michele  on  11/10  at  08:54 PM

Clicking on ALL the links is a good thing, cookie.

Readers of Ed Brayton’s blog are familiar with this story.

On the other hand, you may just like to say really stupid things. In that case, fire away.

Comment #25: gwangung  on  11/10  at  08:55 PM

Quite right, cookie. If you read both articles, it’s clear there is a possibility they could be discussing two different men both called Randy Gray who both live in Midlands, Michigan (population 41,000) and who are both members of the KKK but only one of whom is the GOP delegate.
Sheesh, talk about jumping to unfair conclusions! Pam reminds me of that policeman who was so mean to me when my long-lost identical twin sister robbed a bank and hid the money in my bra.

Comment #26: MissPrism  on  11/10  at  08:56 PM

Dont you think the reporter doing the story out of that town would have put in the story that he was a GOP delegate?  Why would they leave that out? So I am supposed to believe Pam, that he’s a GOP delegate?  How exactly does she know that but the reporter from that town doesnt know it?  I guess lesbians have super secret abilties to know that kinda stuff.

Comment #27: cookie  on  11/10  at  08:59 PM

MissPrism: Yeah I hate when that happens, except my long-lost evil identical twin sister stole a panda from the zoo and then hid it in my bra. Kinda similar, though.

Comment #28: Pannadol  on  11/10  at  09:03 PM

@Seraph: Win.

I’m looking forward to seeing the Republican party self-destruct post this election.  Racists outing themselves as if flung from their closets via catapult is but one of the entertaining spectacles that await us.

Comment #30: L33tminion  on  11/10  at  09:43 PM

Dont you think the reporter doing the story out of that town would have put in the story that he was a GOP delegate?

If the reporter was competent. Or not a friend of Gray.

You’re assuming facts not in evidence.

And you still haven’t clicked on the other link, I see.

It can wait a few months (years?) before they stop being stupid.

Comment #38: Sirkowski  on  11/10  at  11:49 PM

I am kinda surprised with how many people do not question the notion that the GOP somehow must survive.  Not just survive, but continue to be one of the two equally powerful parties.  But the math on that does not add up.

Comment #39: Coturnix  on  11/10  at  11:54 PM

Neither - it’s Python.

Comment #41: Larry  on  11/11  at  12:43 AM

You know, guys who parade around waving flags while wearing the sheets are the least of our worries.  We know who they are and what they are doing and that they are batshit insane is public knowledge.  This guy is all hood where he isn’t all mouth.

The ones to worry about: the quiet and polite guys who are hard core hate racists that follow orders ... the Terry Nichols’ of the world.

Comment #42: Ms Kate  on  11/11  at  01:18 AM

Ohhh my ... if it isn’t Troll House Cookie!  Finally recovered enough from the post-election ass whuppin to drag itself to the computer, eh?

Comment #43: Ms Kate  on  11/11  at  01:21 AM

The funny/fun thing I’ve noticed about this election, Ms Kate, is that more and more of those quiet bigoted asshats seem to think it’s safe to come out of hiding and start shouting about how they truly feel.  I think they started seeing ppl getting away with it in footage from McCain rallies posted on YouTube, and suddenly thought they were normal.  The asshattery just snowballs from there.

Which is kind of good, I suppose, because now we can all see who those fucksticks are.  Then again, seeing that there are still so many such fucksticks is scary, and disheartening.  I kept hearing about how much Klan action there was just outside Baltimore (where I grew up) throughout the past month or two, and… goddamn, my blood just ran cold.  I don’t even live there anymore.

It’s easy to point and laugh at these ridiculous fools from a distance, but I worry.  Though we laugh, there are no doubt people who feel directly threatened by these cretins.  What are we, as a society, to do when these people are deciding it’s safe to act out again?

Sorry to be such a downer, but methinks that Klan people coming out proud, with masks up, does not bode well.

Comment #44: misskatee7511  on  11/11  at  03:10 AM

This is nothing more than the Southern Strategy reaching its full fruition.  All of the Southern, conservative, racist Democrats ran to the GOP beginning in the mid-1960s and thereafter through the next three decades.  The GOP is now overrun by right-wing Southern conservative Christians whose agenda has always been segregation and repression.

Yes, Randy Gray is not a Southerner but he is a kindred spirit.  You don’t see much overt Klan activity down here in Mississippi any more, but we all know these people are still around.  They’re just under cover.

The answer to your question is “yes”.  It’s what they wanted.  They welcomed the racists in order to achieve raw political power.  They got it for awhile, but now all they’re left with is fundagelicals and skinheads.

Farrakhan isn’t an activist in the Democratic party and hasn’t campaigned for anyone.  This guy was a delegate- that’s a bit more involvement in the party than just voting Republican.

Also, David Neiwert at Orcinus noted that he had been a volunteer coordinator for the Ron Paul campaign until the Paul organization discovered his Klan association and fired him.

Dont you think the reporter doing the story out of that town would have put in the story that he was a GOP delegate?  Why would they leave that out?

Um, maybe to avoid embarrassing the GOP in their town?  Does it really seem far-fetched to you that a reporter, or likely the editor or publisher, didn’t want to lose access to the mainstream Republicans who run their town?  Do you think it’s unheard-of that local press has ties to local politicos?

Of course, such things never happen in the national press: why, every TV news network was entirely forthcoming in their disclosure that their independent military analysts were on the Pentagon payroll, right?

Hopefully he was holding a sign that said “No money down.  Low, low, low financing!!”.  I’ll bet he brought in more business than the inflatable Graber Chevrolet klansman normally brings in.  Hey, when it comes to selling cars, sometimes you have to try something new…
