The least surprising reactions in the world pile up

Michelle Malkin put up that picture to discredit Colin Powell.

Her caption is “Gravitas”.

Perhaps she would feel he’s more dignified if he issued his endorsement while dressed as a cheerleader.

I have yet to see a conservative grappling with this that avoids the temptation to race bait.  Malkin comes the closest—-she scolds the race-baiters in her thread.  But then panders on affirmative action, as if there’s no such thing as an old guard white Republican who supports affirmative action.  (There’s plenty.)  And needless to say, the whole point of putting up the picture is race-baiting.  Because, if your only motivation is making Powell look ridiculous, then you’re much better off with a picture of him singing “YMCA” in Indonesia.

Wow.  That picture is real.

Got a broken image link on the first pic, right before “Her caption…”

Collin Powell definitely still has gravitas, specially in the middle east and europe. He also carries a lot of weight among military families. This is about a good number of moderate republicans, not democrats.

We’ll see what the effect of his announcement is

In Wingnuttia, a person is only as good as their loyalty to the cause.  Watch them all drop Powell like a bad habit.

Not that he doesn’t deserve it, but still.

Comment #4: Captain Bathrobe  on  10/19  at  04:12 PM

Colin Powell: I’m a lifelong republican, and within the last five years, that’s mostly meant a series of public humiliations. fuck them.

Comment #5: Indy  on  10/19  at  04:17 PM

So let me get this straight: The secretary of state during the time America entered a war breaks with his party, and Malkin thinks that’s of no consequence?

There seems to be no limit to the ability of these people to ignore reality.

Comment #6: Bitter Scribe  on  10/19  at  04:31 PM

How does the photo in any way discredit Colin Powell?

Comment #7: Luke  on  10/19  at  04:42 PM

Malkin has blocked images referred from Pandagon, it seems. You can still load the image on its own page with a right-click and avoid sullying yourself by actually going to her blog…

And, yeah, it’s every bit as bad as you might think it is.

Evidently, it’s posible to negate a resume featuring stints as natioanl security advisor, chair of the joint chiefs, and secretary of state, by showing that he’s had some unflattering pictures taken of him.

Comment #9: rea  on  10/19  at  04:56 PM

There are definitely things for which good-minded people can point to in order to discredit Colin Powell.

His endorsement of Barack Obama today is hardly one of them.

I’ve flickr’ed the photo in case Malkin cuts links to images from all blogs: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3215/2955062927_cf8a1b0b0a.jpg

The new wingnut meme is Powell didn’t “take out” Saddam Hussein in 1991, so he’s just a limp wristed peacenick. I’m not kidding.

Powell is discredited because he prevented us from being in a quagmire in the 1990s. Yeah. Suuuure that’s a good strategy, wingers!

Comment #12: Ben D.  on  10/19  at  05:26 PM

It seems like conservatives are a little flat footed on this one. I am sure by tomorrow Rush Limbaugh will be explaining that it is Powells “racism” that led him to endorse Obama. Look for that to be the meme of the day from the browshirt wannabes

Comment #13: karl  on  10/19  at  05:32 PM

A better critism might be, Powell endorsed Bush and also endorsed the war. How bad is this guys judgement?

Comment #14: karl  on  10/19  at  05:45 PM

You underestimate Limbaugh—he’s already done it today!

Yeah from here I went over to Yglesias and he has the whole story. Nice to know you can always count on Rush to take the low road

Comment #16: karl  on  10/19  at  05:59 PM

The right wing doesn’t even try to be subtle with their racism anymore.

They just let it all out.

Comment #17: Cat Ion  on  10/19  at  06:56 PM

Gee, I find that far more dignified than, oh, a cheerleading outfit on a 40 something mother of two fit for an Asian fetish website?

Comment #18: Ms Kate  on  10/19  at  09:50 PM

Okay, let’s say that Powell does lack gravitas.  I don’t think he does, but let’s say that Malkin’s judgement of him is correct.  Does it occur to her, I wonder, that a lack of gravitas is no bar to seeing into a matter clearly, and that even the most ridiculous dweeb is bound to make a good call from time to time?  (If looking and acting dorky were an impediment to sound mentation, almost no Gooper apparatchik would ever be right about anything.  Oh, wait.)

I ask you.

Comment #19: bekabot  on  10/19  at  10:39 PM

Sort of like appearing on SNL might lack gravitas?

Comment #20: Mary T  on  10/19  at  10:44 PM

Ms. Kate, how dare you. Malkin was merely offering fan tribute.

Comment #21: mythago  on  10/20  at  12:14 AM

More like fan service.
