Sad, sad, sad, first that he is so obsessed with this scene, and second, that he tries to hold this up as what GLBT are about, every one of us, 24/7/365.

I went to IML this year, and there were, in fact, lots of straight (or straight appearing) folks there, mixed in with all the gay leathermen and the wandering vanilla folk. And there was also (not surprising Labarbera didn’t mention) a delightfully large showing of leatherwomen, both as vendors and as attendees.

What LaBarbera conveniently leaves out is a whole bunch of stuff, like the fact that every entrance to the hotel had signs saying that the hotel was closed to everyone not attending IML, that the hotel was sold out (usually sells out nearly a year in advance), and to get in to the event - to see all these videos and so forth, you had to show a legal photo ID, pay a donation to the Leather Archives and Museum, and sign a waiver specifically listing lots of graphic things (including but not limited to, etc) that you were likely to see if you did go in, and that none of it bothered you. You then got a wristband that indicated you’d done all of the above, which you had to show repeatedly to get in. All the videos were limited to within the confines of the designated (and patrolled) area.

So there is zero chance of an unsuspecting person wandering in off the street and happening across any of the stuff he is complaining about.

On another note, he only mentions the sadists who attended IML. From my experience as a Top, there were far more masochists attending. If he can’t get his basic facts straight….

Oh, and, while I didn’t notice any Satanic stuff going on, there was a Christian worship service on Sunday and a couple of sponsored Pagan and non-denominational spiritual events.

One thing he did get relatively accurately - I sure wouldn’t want to have to do the laundry for the hotel after IML. However, at 6 bucks a beer, the hotel could certainly afford the housekeeping bill.

The booze prices were the real obscenity of the weekend. But all in all, a great time. Highly recommended for anyone in the area next year. I guarantee, nobody will pee on you without your consent. Can’t make the same promise at a Cubs game.

The thing that really struck me was this phrase:

the “Water Boys,” a group that advocates orgies involving men urinating on and in one another.

Now, not all Tops are sadists, and not all bottoms are masochists.  But do you know of any sadistic bottoms or masochistic Tops?  It sounds inconsistent to me, but people come in all flavors, so enlighten me if you would.

But it’s not just the ones who get paid to hate people who are different from them. It’s the everyone of the wingnutty persuasion, even the ones who ostensibly have better things to do.

My wife and I spent Memorial Day weekend next door at the Swissotel. The Mr. Leather crowd seemed like perfectly nice neighbors to us.

Your average “family friendly” hotel in a wholesome vacation spot like Orlando or Branson has probably seen triple the amount of fecal smearing as any hotel that has hosted Int’l Mr. Leather.  Those folks tend to be pretty conscientious with the plastic sheeting et al.  Unlike your average kid in the poo = finger paint stage.

Interesting question. The common wisdom doesn’t involve the concept of sadist/masochist, but more that while being a dominant top or submissive bottom is more common, there are plenty of dominant bottoms and submissive tops - they just have to look a bit harder for each other. Those dualities are pretty well established.

The dominant bottom (or, probably a bit more common, the predominantly Top who also likes to be Done To), would certainly, for the duration of a scene involving pain play or other such, count as being masochistic, while to the degree that they are in charge and directing the action, still count in many people’s mind as being a top. So in that sense, yeah. I would count as one of those tops who periodically enjoys ordering the boys to hurt me (in the good way). But I don’t self-identify that way. Still primarily a sadist, and still primarily a top, regardless of what the videos show.

Doubtless there are folks out there who do in fact self-identify as sadistic bottoms or masochistic tops, but I can’t quite imagine what it is that they might be up to.
