“This” Is A “Post”

Look, you can sort of understand why conservative organizations insist on putting the word gay in quotes when referencing gays and lesbians.  It’s a term of positive self-identification, and anti-gay bigots are spiteful little assnuggets.

But what I don’t get is why they don’t make a movement to reclaim the word, like feminists did “bitch” or black people did “potpourri”.  Wouldn’t you love to see the word “gay” normalized as a method of pro-fundamentalist discourse?

Dr. James Dobson tells you how to put the gay back in your marriage.

The National Review invites you to its 2008 Gay Caribbean Cruise!

John McCain: As Gay As George W. Bush?

The reason I use these examples isn’t to make a series of bad gay jokes, but instead to point out that they’re rebelling against the use of a word that they have no interest whatsoever in using for any other purpose.  It’s like the jackass at work who insists on calling you Katie for months after you told him, repeatedly, that your name was Karen, and then justifies it by saying he was just putting you in your place.  No part of what he’s doing is okay, and every subsequent part makes every previous part that much worse.

Black people reclaimed potpourri? I thought that was reclaimed by the Scandinavians, who then lent it to the New Jerseyans, only to have it outsourced to India? It’s hard to keep up.

Have a gay old time.

...make a movement to reclaim the word, like…black people did “potpourri.”

Huh?

I heard a story on NPR about some conservative website that automatically replaced the word “gay” with “homosexual” whenever it came up in a story.  Chaos ensued when they ran a piece about an Olympic athlete whose last name was Gay.

See there are these things called jokes.  One type of joke is to play on the audience’s expectations, like making them expect you are going to say one thing and then say something completely different.

Given the frequency with which the fundamentalist community sees its leaders caught with prostitutes of the same sex, you’d think they’d want to reclaim the word if only to deflect some of the coverage.

Sarah MC I read about that on a few blogs… they did fix that specific article, but people still have screenshots and googlecache versions of the original.

and I’m also confused by the potpourri reference. Was it local slang or something??

When Truman allowed “black” soldiers to serve in the same units as whites, it crippled our military.  The doctrine of “racial tolerance” has led to the post-WW2 decline of…

I can’t do it.  I set out to parody gay-bashing wingnuts and realized there are still people who actually believe this about racial integration.

I made myself sad.

I read that as “spicy little assnuggets” at first, which sounded like the worst fast-food menu item of all time.

Surprisingly tasty, actually. They’re at Taco Bell.

Is that why black people punch me in the mouth when I say “Merry Christmas, n****r, here’s some potpourri”? Or is it because it’s a known fallback gift?

I don’ty know why that would bother them, unless you had Christmas music playing in the background: “Don we now our gay apparel”  Let’s face it—this whole Christmas business, with its emphasis on getting “merry” (a known synonym for “gay”), is probably part of the homosexual agenda.
