This Just Might Be A Terrible Column

ColumnistsMedia

imageI’m torn about whether this John F. Harris article is terrible.  On the one hand, it’s like a hall of mirrors…of stupid.  It’s a reporter discussing all the things that he and his ilk could be saying about Obama…but aren’t yet.  Harris proposes 7 narratives that Obama hopes doesn’t catch on, which, technically makes sense - I certainly hope that one of seven largely contradictory and largely unsupported narratives based largely on insider gossip and what seems like random interactions with people who may or may not be in the Obama Administration.  The narratives are:

1.) He thinks he’s playing with Monopoly money

2.) Too much Leonard Nimoy

3.) That’s the Chicago Way

4.) He’s a pushover

5.) He sees America as another pleasant country on the U.N. roll call, somewhere between Albania and Zimbabwe

6.) President Pelosi

7.) He’s in love with the man in the mirror

So, Obama is a too-logical, frivolous narcissist who bullies people around as they push him over (particularly Nancy Pelosi), and he also hates America.  QED.

What Harris wants this to demonstrate is the terrible position Obama has found himself in, having frittered away all of his goodwill with

the American people

the Washington press corps.  What this actually demonstrates is that the Washington press corps literally makes shit up, and that covering the leader of the free world allows ample opportunity to take one interaction, one event, and spin it into the very definition of a presidency simply by focusing on it ad nauseum.  The reason the media is so distrusted is precisely this - Harris has written what’s little more than an effective holdup note, letting Obama know that if he steps out of line there’s a myriad of ways in which he will be made to pay.

There should be some shame on Harris’ part for writing a story that’s basically admitting his job is sitting around throwing darts at a board, deciding what inane shit he wants to say today.  However, I’m pretty sure he’ll be on MSNBC all day tomorrow, discussing the serious and deep import of all the ways in which Obama is losing at everything.  And the best part is that it actually helps to cover up the actual issues with the Obama Administration, because Spock jokes are so much more fun to repeat for 16 hours a day on cable news.

Throwing darts at a board requires some actual skill. John Harris throw darts at his office wall, which is covered with RNC press releases.

I lost count what with all the time travel, but didn’t Spock save the galaxy like a bajillion times? He’s super competent, gets all the ladies and has a bitchin’ ride, so…. where’s the problem in this comparison?

Comment #2: Keith  on  11/30  at  07:52 PM

Politico <3s apophasis.

I get many chuckles out of someone in the Washington press corps calling someone else a narcissist.

Comment #3: Alison  on  11/30  at  08:38 PM

This merely extends Obama’s dual nature, present since his (Hawaiian AND Kenyan) birth. Obama is both black and white, African and American (not to mention Asian), Christian and Muslim, Vulcan and human, rich and poor, animal and vegetable, etc.etc. Now he is both bully and pushover, an egomaniac willing to let Pelosi bask in the limelight, and a free-spender who realizes we’re in too much debt to continue to be the world’s policeman.

When in the eff did…Pelosi ... wait… what?
It’s that whole scared of the vagina reich-wing moonbat crap rearing it’s ugly head again.
To be fair they’re scared of EVERY vagina but just like to scapegoat a few.

Comment #5: Danica Lefse Queen  on  11/30  at  09:16 PM

To be fair to the press, they went easy on the Republicans, so now they have to overcompensate. Makes perfect sense.

Comment #6: bay of arizona  on  11/30  at  09:17 PM

No, it’s not a holdup note, because there is no right course Obama can take in Harris’s world. If he does anything to avoid being labeled a pushover, he gets tagged for being a gangsta. If he shows emotion, he’s a frivolous wimp; if he’s calm he’s inhuman.

I think that this is a perfect opportunity for the White House press office and for someone like media matters. “Today the Washington Post went with #3 on the Harris Spin Dial, but the New York Times went with #5. Fox News, meanwhile, went with 1-7 inclusive, even the ones that contradict each other, plus a side order of islamophobia.”

From the Politico article:

Many, though far from all, of these same people [economists and buisness leaders] now agree that these actions helped avert an even worse financial catastrophe. Along the way, however, it is clear Obama underestimated the political consequences that flow from the perception that he is a profligate spender.

So the reality is that he probably put out the fire that was raging when he took office, but the perception that he’s profligate is more important. Got it.

There are some people so dumb that I just don’t enjoy sharing my country with them.

Comment #8: Bitter Scribe  on  11/30  at  10:12 PM

Like bay of arizona said, the media is compensating for it’s lack of criticism of the Bush administration, which in itself was a result of compensating for it’s constant nit picking and scandal mongering during the Clinton years.  Of course, when another Republican is elected they’ll realize the error of their ways and go easy on them.  The main stream media in this country are just shills for the corporate power structure.  Their job is to make sure that nothing happens to upset the status quo.

We have gone from a Democratic landslide to the latest polls which suggest that forty percent of voters who identify themselves as Democrats don’t plan to vote in 2010.  The press feeds our feelings of hopelessness, but if we lose Congress in the mid-terms it will be our own fault.  We can’t do anything to change the minds of Republicans about Obama, but we can at least try to keep a majority in the House and Senate.  Democrats who are deserting the party because they think Obama have betrayed them somehow are not paying attention.

Comment #9: G Porgey  on  11/30  at  10:38 PM

You’re definitely right on all accounts. But I think the list is really revealing of the exact things wrong with our press corps and how exactly we got things like the Bush presidency supported on the back of non-stop media pimping.

Specifically #2, #5, and #6.

#6 is obvious of course. The overwhelming cock dominance of the Washington Press Corps which is not only overwhelmingly male but often reveals itself to be absolutely terrified of vagina. A great example of this was a while back when MSNBC was dithering for months onto years over hiring Rachel Madow even though she was by far and away the favorite guest on Olbermann and the most popular. Combined with the way Tweety and Pat Robertson can never be fired. Especially Tweety who has so much vagina fear I was expecting him to wave a crucifix around when forced to be on the same panel as Maddow for the inauguration coverage.

#5 of course is the reason for the vagina fear. Basically the absolute need for America’s position in the world to be the constant “my cock is really big” reinforcement for all of those men in the media. This gets behind why there is no war worth not supporting and why diplomacy or winding down wars are “unserious ideas” not worth investigating. The absolute glee the media had over embedding and playing soldier and the overly insane belief in American Exceptionalism manifests itself in crystalized form with that sentence. Not only does it echo the Rapturist Cult’s “UN = bad” nonsense, but the very bad narrative that would just sink him would be if America was just another country in the world. What? We are just another country in the world and maybe it would help if we acknowledged that instead of believing our massive space cock will somehow protect us from global concerns like global warming or terroristic religious groups of all faiths.

#2 though is the kicker and the answer to the why Bush questions. The Village hates, hates, HATES smart people. They can’t even pretend that they’re really just bothered by what they are trying to infer, because they went apeshit for a month earlier this year over the word empathy. What they despise is someone actually intelligent who believes that their job is not to entertain our children of the press corps like Bush did, but actually solving problems and thinking about what we can do to fix our mess of a country. I imagine that’s half of it.

The other half of course being the obvious. Smart people make them look dumb, make them feel dumb. Sure it gets run through a narrative of “the people” want someone “just like them”, but this is just more revealing. With Bush, they could say to themselves as very serious people that they were smarter than the President and because the public voted for him (on the back of their pimping), thus they were smarter than the american people as well who would take whatever narrative they wanted to sell and eat it the moronic cows. This meant they could believe themselves to always be the smartest in the rooms, the libertarian zeitgeist of being the only one who knows what’s really going on so they never have to examine their worldviews for connection to reality or sanity.

But a smart president? They’re obviously smarter than they are. Sometimes they even point out incredibly stupid questions or at least don’t preen over how great the questions are. And if the public wants someone smarter than them in charge, or worse if the public is smart enough to think the nerd is more “Real America” then the public isn’t buying their shit anymore. They might ask questions, the uppity bloggers. They might mock the glorious media and worse, there might be inklings in the back of the media masters’ heads that maybe that tiny fraction of the public might be bigger than they suspect. Maybe there is a big demand for journalism that involves actual work and it’s the end of the free ride. Maybe they don’t know everything already and actually have to study things and can’t just spit out a bunch of talking points from the school of “my daddy says”.

It is the single greatest threat to their penis. Above even women and America no longer being used as a symbol of their penis, which is why it ranked so much higher only topped by the usual number one (whatever Republican meme is currently hot right now).

And it’s the main reason why our media network is so fucked. And also why I love Rachel Maddow.

Comment #10: Cerberus  on  11/30  at  10:54 PM

As a person of a non-USian persuasion, I am saddened but not surprised that #5 is seen as a point with which to attack Obama.  Because Maude knows what the world really needs is a US that sees itself as a part of the world community where diverse voices have validity.

I noticed that all of the citations in the article were of the opinions of other Washington journalists.

There’s real news on the Yahoo! front page? Because all I usually get are a few headlines huddling like frightened ducklings under a wing of celebrity rumormongering bullshit.

Besides, this is just typical flogging of tired memes. If Obama really practiced the “Chicago way”, this guy would be picking his teeth out of his morning bowel movement tomorrow, and everyone knows that there’s no such thing as too much Leonard Nimoy.
