A Belleville West High School student was beaten aboard a bus on the way to school Monday, and a police spokesman said the beating could be racially motivated.
The 17-year-old victim was white and the teen assailants were black. Police released a video of the beating, which shows the victim being punched repeatedly while other students on the bus gather to watch, some cheering. It doesn’t appear that the victim did anything to provoke an attack and tried only to defend himself. …

But Cracker Barrel also has a long history of discrimination against black customers and workers (they paid $8.7M back in 2004 to settle a groups of lawsuits) so it’s possible that they also attract a, uh, certain element.

Well, he should be charged with a federal hate crime, but I feel the most important thing is that this girl who witnessed this and is naturally traumatized by it, get the help she will need in dealing with this.  She is going to grow up in a differen world than the one we inhabit today.  We have a black president and some thought it meant racism had been eradicated.  What it meant was that we turned a corner in this country and now a black man can be elected president.  But racism is not gone.  however, it is in its last throes and the screaming and raging, and the guns, and the violence, that you see and you hear, that is its death throes.

Am I the only one amused that this happened at Cracker Barrel? Or is that in poor taste?

It’s in poor taste in the sense that the word itself and the name of the restaurant shouldn’t matter, which makes it a cheap (and somewhat racist) joke. If this scum had done this at Applebee’s, same deal.

However, as has been pointed out, Cracker Barrel, independent of the name, has a history of exceptionally poor handling of race (and sexual orientation) issues. Given that they have evidenced themselves as corporately racist, sexist, and homophobic to some degree, it’s hardly a surprise if their customers mirror that.

That “black thug” attended Columbia, Harvard Law, was elected head of the law review by his fellow students, then taught constitutional law at a good university.  He’s happily married with two kids and seems to be a loving father and husband. The thing that people against hate crimes law (who always have oh so principled objectives, dontchaknow) always bring up the idea that we should punish this guy for being a crazed, violent person who beats up a woman because she told him to be careful not to smack a child with a door. ‘Why does it matter why he did it’ they say. Or ‘every violent crime is a hate crime.’

Because as sensible advocates always point out, it’s about the effect on other people. Bet you anything this man is involved in some way with meth.  I hate to say it, let alone admit it, but I live in a part of the country which was once in the running for meth/carjacking capital of the world, and I’ve run across this kind of thing before.

For some reason I can’t figure out, the meth subculture and the white supremacist/separatist subcultures all overlap.  I don’t know why this should be, but the fact remains that it’s so.  (Which throws an interesting light on Mr. West’s behavior.)

It’s also interesting that Mr. West runs an auto body shop.  Meth has the horrible side effect of being able to convince people who don’t know how to fix things that they’re experts in mechanics, so that they take things apart without being able to put them back together again, but for people who do know how to fix things, it can increase—temporarily—their ability to focus and concentrate and stay awake for long periods of time.  Consequently guys who do repair work for a living sometimes find meth tempting to use.

So, the I’m-better-than-black-people thing fits, the choice of occupation fits, and the rage and intemperateness also fit.  Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.

Any reaction to the violence against our president will be used by the right wing as well.  It’s the lesson we should have learned in the ‘60s.
