Values at the Values Voter Summit - Obama as a Muslim Aunt Jemima

UPDATE: FRC must have received a lot of blowback because it’s issued a press release to respond to this bigoted tripe. See it below the fold.

The Values Voter Summit is taking place this weekend, and along with the usual bloviating and bible-beating rhetoric, we have the high-minded Dominionists of Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council sponsoring a booth at the convention selling this item, which it calls “political satire.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed “offensive material.” The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama’s policy positions but had not examined them closely.

Fomenting an Aunt Jemima stereotype along with the Obama-as-Muslim smear in one nice package—what would Jesus do? Some of the luminaries of the right attending and speaking at this conference include:

Most see this for what it is, others, well…

I have always known the the Focus on the Family group was conservative, but I didn’t know they were choosing to act as a surrogate for the Ku Klux Klan. There is absolutely NOTHING funny about this.

At least the racism is right out there on the table for all to see in the light of day. Values Voters?! KKK values, apparently. Make no mistake about who these people are.

Take mercy on these poor bastards and explain what satire is so there won’t be any more embarrasing acts like this.

Sadly, the modern-day version of the party of Abraham Lincoln has come full circle to revert to selling racism in a box for $10. Pathetic.

They can’t find anything concrete that’s wrong with Obama—no smoking gun, so to speak—so they resort to this garbage. I would be embarrassed to be a Republican if this is an example of what they’re like. Most of them are clueless as to what real life is like.

I’ve always said that if this country is to be attacked by an enemy, it will be by domestic nuts like this, not foreign. Think Timothy McVeigh.

I have never understood why debasing another person makes one feel good about yourself? Are you saying your supporters are nothing but moronic racists….or is that just the segment you wish to appeal to? Dems wish Obama would “hit back” But do you want our candidate to roll in this gutter?

This is such a…non-story. This is just liberals looking for something to be offended by.
posted by Average_Joe on Sep. 13, 08 at 2:44 PM |

“No story”? Things like this need to be covered. This type of behavior needs to be brought out into the light or it will never stop.

This kind of racist garbage has no place in modern America, let alone in an election. The white trash fringe that find this sort of thing amusing need to slither back under their rocks now.

Why do these people not represent the truth about Obama. Represent him for what he is proven to be: A black racist on Sunday during his church services as Reverend Wright savagely attacked white America. This went on for twenty years. Plus his financial support to violent ex-weathermen members Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn to the tune of three hundred thousand dollars of taxpayer money. How can a black racist and a supporter of violent terrorists of the past become the President of the USA? Wake up people and vote your conscience.

the Muslim tie-in doen’t make sense…but what is RACIST about it? Now before you get all riled up with a reply - think first and look at the image. Other than the headwear depicted, it’s a caricature, plain and simple. Just like the beady eyed, Dumbo-eared ones we’ve been seeing of GW the last eight years. Just because he’s black, doesn’t make him immune to caricature’s. And if he isn’t muslim (?), than let the ones that created the image wallow in their own stupidity for insinuating that he is. Intolerant, cpunks2?? Take a look in the mirror, my friend.

UPDATE (Sat, 10:45 PM). Here’s the damage control press release from FRC:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 13, 2008
CONTACT: J.P. Duffy, (202) 679-6800

Statement by Family Research Council Action Executive Director David Nammo September 13, 2008

We strongly condemn the tone and content of materials that were exhibited by one of the vendors at this weekend’s Values Voter Summit.  The materials represent an attempt at parody that crosses the line into coarseness and bias.

The exhibitor contacted our reviewer just days before the Summit by email and described material that sounded like it was devoted to political flip-flops on policy issues.  When the content of the materials was brought to the attention of FRC Action senior officials today, they were removed and the exhibit was dismantled by the vendor at our insistence.  It is our responsibility to fully vet materials that are offered at any event we cosponsor, but we are deeply dismayed that this vendor violated the spirit, message and tone of our event in such an offensive manner.

The Values Voter Summit represents a coming together of many long-established organizations that work across denominational and ethnic lines to celebrate and promote the family and a culture of life.  We reject any communications that divide and distract us and frustrate these principles. Bishop Harry Jackson’s High Impact Leadership Coalition, Gary Bauer’s American Values, and Alliance Defense Fund join us in rejecting this material.

Not that deplorable racism peddlers like this are likely to be affected by email from those opposed to their actions, but if anyone wants to email the company that produces these items, the address is: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Let’s not be hasty, here… I have long sought the secret to tastier waffles!

Comment #2: norbizness  on  09/13  at  06:13 PM

Wow.  Even most of the people I know who start out any discussion of race with “I’m not a racist, but…” would be disgusted by this.

Comment #3: an anonymous kate  on  09/13  at  06:14 PM

Yet another racist anti-Obama item.  I think I’m already over-saturated.

While I’m glad to read that other people are disgusted too, apparently whoever made this didn’t hesitate to throw it out there and the Values Voter Summit people didn’t get interested enough to do anything about it for a couple days.

Nice to know (again) what kind of people some of my fellow citizens really are…

Comment #4: MikeEss  on  09/13  at  06:34 PM

Another day, another misuse of the word “satire” by the Right…

Comment #5: Nicole  on  09/13  at  06:58 PM

I sure love those Republican values.

Comment #6: keshmeshi  on  09/13  at  07:14 PM

Two wrongs (in this case, looksism is the second one) don’t make a right, but I think Stephen Baldwin should consider getting hit in the face with a shovel on a less-regular basis.

Comment #7: Johnboy  on  09/13  at  07:18 PM

I like the commenter who said that if you ignore the racist imagery, it’s just a caricature, so why is everyone getting so upset over a simple caricature of a politician?

Gee, could it have something to do with the turban on his head that you want to pretend is not there?  If your visual analysis consists of ignoring parts of the image, it’s not really much of an analysis as a desperate search to find something, anything to defend the image.

Comment #8: Mnemosyne  on  09/13  at  07:21 PM

Wonderful. More of those awesome Christian values we keep hearing about. I love being lectured on my immorality and lack of fitness for membership in the United States by these people.

Oh, hang on. Someone made a bad pun about General Petraeus’s name! LIEBRALS!!!!! OMGWTFBBQTTFNTGIF!!!

Comment #9: Ross Lincoln  on  09/13  at  08:20 PM

Is there something really, really fucked up going on with the TN Republican Party? I mean even more than MOST state Republican Parties?

They were the ones, IIRC, who made that horrible YouTube-esque anti-Michelle Obama ad earlier this year, too. Who is running that outfit?

Comment #10: Ben D.  on  09/13  at  08:29 PM

I do think emails to the company serve a purpose.  Shame.  Only when people realize that certain things are racist (and not simply funny) will they be forced to examine the underlying source of their racism.  Of course many will be too stubborn and ignorant to ever admit it, but others will have the chance to question their actions and emotions.

I got my Dad to stop saying n*****r and that simple action made him think about what the word meant and why he felt the way he did.  Strangely, over the course of the next few years, he gave up on trickle-down economics and calling all minorities lazy welfare queens.  (I don’t claim to be the catalyst for all this, but he was forced to admit some facts when they were put in his face.)  He went from being a complete Ronnie fan to sticking a Kerry sign in his yard.  Yup.

Comment #11: Ann  on  09/13  at  08:39 PM

It looks more like OJ Siompson then Barack Obama!  Is that on purpose too?

Comment #12: Allison  on  09/13  at  10:27 PM

There is absolutely NOTHING funny about this.

Oh, C’mon! Of *course* it’s funny!! That’s why they sold out.

Comment #13: Robert__Zimmerman  on  09/13  at  10:29 PM

Why are people who do not have any values holding a Values Voter Summit?

Comment #14: Luke  on  09/14  at  12:26 AM

And, of course, no rethug would get upset if a dem started selling “Slut Sausages” with a pic of Palin showing how she can eat one in two bites.

Hush, R_Z, it’s the adults’ turn to talk in this thread.

Comment #16: The Dark Avenger and Guardian of 10 Gold Chow Mein  on  09/14  at  12:53 AM

Guys, where do you think the Klan WENT?

In the 60s, after Brown, Segregationist Academies flourished, under the umbrella protection of “private church schools.”

Even today, in the Memphis classifieds, “Christian” is a codeword for “white.”

The Religious Right is as racist as they ever were, but they are seldom so open about it. Usually they hide it under talk of Responsibility. And they’ve diversified into misogyny and homophobia, since it’s at least acceptable to hate gays (80% of the voting public does) and not acceptable to openly hate blacks.

Comment #17: Angelia Sparrow  on  09/14  at  01:08 AM

But Lou Dobbs LOVED the waffles! Why, I’m sure that if you drop CNN a line, they’ll encourage Lou to discuss this at length.

My wife will love this!”

Clutching his prize.
