Veepstakes!

Democrats suggested today that Senator John McCain may choose Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane of Hazzard County, Georgia, as his running mate.  Coltrane, despite being a fictional character from a nonexistent county, is widely discussed in Democratic circles as being a tough on crime conservative with a long record of executive experience.  “Coltrane is causing fits among many key figures in our party,” said one Democratic operative, citing both Martin Sheen’s advisor from The American President and Martin Sheen’s ex-president from The West Wing.

*GIGGLE!!!!*

(The page you link to, however, seems to lack any such information.  IIRC, Yahoo tends to use the same URL for multiple stories over a short period of time, updating the page with topically-relevent but different information, and it might’ve gotten replaced.)

They’ll have to be more subtle than that if they want to be thrown into the briar patch.

Why is crap like this considered news? At least the sensationalistic bullshit has the excuse of being sensationalistic, this is just mundane crap that means nothing and nobody anywhere actually wants to read.

Not only was Sheriff Coltrane conservative and tough on crime, but he managed things so that Hazzard County was unique in rural Georgia for not containing a single black.  Obviously, this is the man McCain, and the country needs.

Ahhh, but Sheriff Coltrane was good enough to always let the Duke boys escape the clutches of the law.  Of course, they did have that fine automobile to help.

But one thing is obvious: if Mr McCain selected Sheriff Coltrane as his running mate, it would truly be a bipartisan ticket; Sheriff Coltrane and all of the others in authority in Hazzard County were Democrats!  smile

I did see somewhere—maybe the ?Philadelphia Inquirer—a list of when vice presidential running mates were announced.  It seems that, in recent history, John Edwards in 2004 was announced with the most advance notice, twenty days before the convention.  It’s difficult to imagine that we’d see an announcement earlier than that.

The Republican National Convention occurs a week after the Democratic National Convention.  In theory, John McCain might be able to do some strategerizing if he waited until he knew who would be running with Barack Obama, and select his running mate accordingly.

Not only was Sheriff Coltrane conservative and tough on crime, but he managed things so that Hazzard County was unique in rural Georgia for not containing a single black.

Yet, interestingly, the sheriff - the competent sheriff - of neighboring Chickasaw County was a black man.

See, I always thought Bush was Roscoe. The incompetence, the snicker, it all seemed to fall into place. Even Cheney as Boss Hogg.

I’m thinking that they need to improve the tar baby.  ‘Cause Gephardt talks back.
