Vitter and Craig co-sponsor Federal Marriage Amendment

The “I’m not sh*tting you” news of the day. Here are two guys who should have hung their hypocritical heads in shame after embarrassing their party, but they just can’t help themselves - they hate TEH GAYZ that much. (PageOneQ):

Two United States Senators implicated in extramarital sexual activity have named themselves as co-sponsors of S. J. RES. 43, dubbed the Marriage Protection Amendment. If ratified, the bill would amend the United States Constitution to state that marriage “shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.”  Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID), who was arrested June 11, 2007 on charges of lewd conduct in a Minneapolis airport terminal, is co-sponsoring the amendment along with Sen. David Vitter (R-LA).

In July of 2007, Vitter was identified as a client of a prostitution firm owned by the late Deborah Jeane Palfrey, commonly known as The DC Madam.

Here’s the full text of S. J. RES. 43. The critical language:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.

As far as I’m concerned, this is a great development for the Democrats, who can hold up Craig and Vitter as the poster children for the kind of pious hypocrisy that cost the GOP the House and Senate in 2006. Thanks, boys for your whoring and cruising around to remind everyone why you and your womb controlling, LGBT-hating party need to be bounced out of power.

Sponsor:
Sen Wicker, Roger F. [MS] (introduced 6/25/2008)

The full list of co-sponsors, no surprises here:
Sen Allard, Wayne [CO]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Brownback, Sam [KS]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Craig, Larry E. [ID]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Enzi, Michael B. [WY]  - 6/26/2008
Sen Inhofe, James M. [OK]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Roberts, Pat [KS]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Shelby, Richard C. [AL]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Thune, John [SD]  - 6/25/2008
Sen Vitter, David [LA]  - 6/25/2008

NOTE: At the end of the article…

A voice mail left for Craig spokesperson Susan Irby went unreturned. Attempts to contact Vitter’s press secretary Joel DiGrado were unsuccessful.

What?! They don’t have anything to say about the sponsorship of the bill? Don’t they want to hold a joint press conference?

Ah, let’s have a Big Larry flashback audio mashup by David Guggenheim of The Michelangelo Signorile Show:

The Toe-Tapping Diaper Play Marriage Amendment Act of 2008?

I knew you weren’t kidding - you just can’t make this stuff up!

On the one hand, this is insane. On the other hand, since I haven’t been able to tell the difference between a Republican senator and a Democrat senator for several years now, I’m terrified this thing will pass.

Comment #2: Faye  on  06/27  at  04:18 PM

Somewhat OT, but I’m always amused that the GOP convention logo, because it looks like the elephant is taking a dump on Minneapolis.

Click on that logo for some interesting variations of it. smile

I think that the Minnesota reception of the RNC should be organized around the Vitter-Craig Marriage Amendment. The whole town should be plastered with Vitter-Craig posters, buttons, bumper stickers. A group. A web site. A spokesman. Events. Speeches by Vitter and Craig.

Comment #5: John Emerson  on  06/27  at  05:15 PM

So, John, it would be called the Vitter-Craig Marriage reception?

Comment #6: Samantha Vimes  on  06/27  at  06:10 PM

I’d figure this was a joke if I didn’t know it was true.  How stupid do you have to be to play right into the hands of your critics by being hypocritical douches?

Comment #7: Damian  on  06/27  at  06:16 PM

What’s the next step beyond shameless? Are we going to have to invent a word to describe this?

Comment #8: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  06/27  at  06:53 PM

“Are we going to have to invent a word to describe this?”

No, we already have a word for it: posturing. The liberals will mock it, the conservatives will embrace it, but ultimately, this will probably be the last anyone hears of it. This is particularly applicable to proposed amendments to the Constitution.

If you want another descriptive phrase, try “water under the bridge”.

Comment #9: jed  on  06/27  at  07:20 PM

Wait, you’re serious?  I think the word I’m looking for is “flabbergasted”.

Comment #10: BadKitty  on  06/27  at  07:25 PM

I’m assuming the slogan will be along the lines of, “Sure, what we did was bad, but gay marriage is, like, infinity times worse!”

And some morons out there will nod and go, “Well, they’ve got a point there.  Two fellas getting married is much worse than visiting a hooker.”

Comment #11: Mnemosyne  on  06/27  at  07:26 PM

I think this is actually a very clever strategy by the GOP designed to put parodists and satirists out of business.

Comment #12: libdevil  on  06/27  at  08:54 PM

These guys must really hate The Onion.

Comment #13: paul  on  06/27  at  10:37 PM

The GOP really does hate their base.  But they like to use them.

For example, rich, blue state Republicans don’t give two shits about Roe. Abortion will always be legal in the blue states. But if the fundies want poor, red state women to head to back alleys in exchange for votes, that’s fine with them.

Most Americans are not gay. Therefore, Republicans can throw gays under a bus for little or no cost.

The real Republican party is all about rich people who don’t want to pay their taxes. Never forget this.

Comment #14: wayward  on  06/27  at  10:51 PM

Sanctimatrimoniousness?

Comment #15: Ms Kate  on  06/28  at  12:07 AM

Somehow, I get this distinct thought of seeing Bobo and Chuckles running a campaign to illegalize facepaint.

And am I being filtered? If I am, I wonder what I did…

Comment #16: StarStorm  on  06/28  at  03:36 AM

don’t we ALREADY have fucking federal DOMA

Comment #17: denelian  on  06/28  at  06:36 AM
