Who’s holding the sword now? is the title that this post was originally going to have

Every once in awhile, I get an urge to write a post about Christianity. This being Pandagon, I usually treat that urge the same way internet Randians treat the urge to develop a modicum of self-awareness. But I’m all out of weed…

The above was the opening of a short post which grew wildly out of control and wildly aimed at the wrong audience, so instead, here’s the best fan trailer ever made:

Just to stick with my intended theme: Jesus Christ, they have to make this movie.

I love all things Green Lantern.

Ch’p!

That is, indeed, an awe-inspiring trailer. Now we need to get someone to make the movie for real…

Also: Fan trailer for a Legend of Zelda movie.

You big tease.  I wanna read the original post.

Comment #4: GumbyAnne  on  05/24  at  10:04 PM

I’m going to have to send this to one of my friends… he’s such a huge Green Lantern fan he’ll pee his pants.

Comment #5: Vail  on  05/24  at  10:19 PM

Huge lantern fan here. I alternate this: < http://www.stylinonline.com/hatgreenlanternclassic.html > with my Marine Corps Barracks Cover for hats… favorite cover is green… have an action figure in the orginal packaging…

This was awesome.

So far DC has converted to film better than Marvel.
Except for Ironman.

I noticed at the end they teased the up coming Captain Tightpants movie
:D

I saw some bits from video games, some bits from the “Justice League” cartoon, some bits from “Star Wars”—but where did the stuff from Oa come from? What Nathan Fillion movie was that from?

Love a good fan trailer.  smile

Comment #8: Scott  on  05/25  at  12:12 AM

Wow. That was a fan trailer? No way! Unless it’s Fillion angling for the part.

Oa itself is, I believe, Coruscant with some digital editing. There were several moments from the new “Star Trek” - it was disconcerting watching the new movie right after seeing this trailer because I kept saying “hey, it’s Green Lantern again!” And Augustlet, who just watched the trailer, identified several moments from, of all things, Adam Sandler’s “Bedtime Stories.”

cynickal, I find myself compelled to defend Marvel, who’s had good films (Blade, X-Men) great films (X-men 2 and Iron Man, Spider-Man 1&2;). The reason a lot of the others, say, X-3 and Fantastic Four, or that rancid piece of shit Spider-Man 3 and that other piece of shit Wolverine, sucked balls is more to do with Fox than Marvel. Iron Man rocked because Fox had nothing to do with it and it was all Marvel producing their own product and getting it right because they UNDERSTAND their product and they got good people to write/direct it. It will be great to see what Marvel can do with X-Men and FF when they get their rights back.

And I’m guessing you didn’t get to read the original Justice League script, just be happy that that fell through for now wink.

Comment #11: UltraMagnus  on  05/25  at  02:02 AM

Oh, and the Captain Tightpants part at the end is from the instant classic “White Noise 2”, which I only know because of YouTube comments, which appear to occasionally be good for something after all.

And for my money, the imperfect but enjoyable Incredible Hulk which, despite not actually making much more money than its predecessor, nonetheless performed the unheard of feat of rescuing an entire franchise from a high-profile flop. I suppose that may have happened before, but I’ve never heard of it.

It’s almost impossible to believe now, but Eric Bana was pre-signed for two sequels to the Ang Lee Hulk. Two!

Well, Hollywood studios have always been inclined to do that, since X-Men, where that entire cast was signed on for three films. It’s just to ensure that no one gets money hungry if there’s a hit. In the case of Toby Macguire, when he tried to use his Seabiscuit “injury” to weasel more money out of Sony that’s when they were going to cancel his contract and cast Jake Gyllenhaal. Whether or not they had any intention of doing it, it worked cause Toby went back to work with no pay increase.

Now, if there’s even a remote chance of a film turning into a franchise actors are signed on for three movies whether or not the movies happen. Unfortunately for Christian Bale, he’s obligated to do Batman 3, even if Christopher Nolan ditches the franchise.

And I personally thought Eric Bana should’ve been given a second chance as Bruce Banner.

No, I know. I kind of oversold my amazement, really. I was more just marveling at the level of fail the first Hulk delivered.

How is this different from Batman Begins’ achievement?

Yeah, I see I was unclear. I meant that a first-time-out flop kills a franchise. Examples.

Comment #19: Auguste  on  05/25  at  04:51 AM

I wouldn’t have believed Fillion as Hal Jordan until now. Sold.  So totally sold.  Stupid me, I even dug the New Frontiers version of Jordan and didn’t even put two and two together.

It’s nice to see those tight-ass hipster douches of Pajiba not on this thread dissing the idea of Green Lantern.

Comment #20: idiosynchronic  on  05/25  at  08:36 AM

Another idea for a film or TV franchise was resurrecting Roddenbury’s Gary Seven and making it as creepy and as awesome as post-modernism can.  I think the time of opportunity passed though.

Comment #21: idiosynchronic  on  05/25  at  08:41 AM

As far as DC movies vs. Marvel movies: I’m a complete DC fanboy, and I really do think Marvel’s kicking DC’s ass when it comes to film. Marvel has had a ton of movies, some bad, some very, very good; DC has had “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” “Superman Returns”... and that’s about it.

Comment #22: Scott  on  05/25  at  09:07 AM

I’ve never been a big comic book movie fan, but I would go see this movie.  When I was a little girl, The Green Lantern was my fave.  Mainly cause my brother and all his friends were into Batman and Spiderman and all that and I didn’t want to look like I was copying.

I was sorely disappointed when I realized this was in no way a real trailer.  They need to make this fucking movie.  It’s compelling shit.

I never liked Green Lantern that much for the same reason I didn’t like Superman: he’s too powerful.  The Power Rangers are just as compelling when you get down to it: gee, will they manage to all get together and push the button to become the super powerful super protector robot that is accompanied by electric guitar and lots of sparks?  Yes.  Will Superman stop being so sensitive and do what he must?  Yes.  Will Green Lantern use his damn near infinite powers for good?  Yes.

Yeah, yeah, I know: I’m missing the inner turmoil of those no-longer-teenagers, the guy with his planet destroyed, and the dude in the green mask who isn’t Kato.  Whatever.  I’m missing the truly evil arch-enemies they have, whether it’s the bald guy, the Sinestro yellow fellow, or the dubbed guys in foam rubber costumes.  Again, whatever.

Maybe I’m too old to get excited by superheroes.  I’ll regain my nerd cred at the midnight showings of The Hobbit, I guess.

Wow, quite an impressive video short by fans.  But, was it me or did I see Humpty Dumpty in a superhero costume in there?

That’s an old Silver Age Green Lantern named Galius Zed (who I had to look up because I couldn’t remember his name—there are an insane buttload of Green Lanterns out there). He wasn’t an egg—just, um, round.

Comment #30: Scott  on  05/25  at  11:45 AM

I was thinking over a Starman movie, and hanging up on the little problem of there already being a very popular movie called “Starman”, and thought maybe we should film James Robinson’s Jack Knight character and just call him “Green Lantern”, but I have changed my mind: let’s see Nathan Filion playing Hal Jordan, test pilot / Korea veteran / Green Lantern of Sector 2814 saving Venusian cavemen and shaking hands with President Eisenhower and everything.

Comment #31: Dr. Psycho  on  05/25  at  01:22 PM

Ok, seriously?  EricJG isn’t even trying anymore.  Posting random links or random song titles on various threads has to be one of the definitions of trolling.  (Granted, I’d rather scroll past that than his screeds defending torture.)  I’d like to see him tossed back under the bridge.

So, what are the chances that they’d make this flick with Nathan Fillion?  I don’t know much about Green Lantern, but I’d see the movie for Fillion!

Comment #32: Karinna A.  on  05/25  at  01:24 PM

seriously, up until the point where it was Mal falling on the Serenity from “Out Of Gas” (in Firefly, of course) i thought that this was real.

and despite the other scenes from Firefly/Serenity… it’s very convincing.

and Green Lantern was one of the few DC comics i liked!

and “Captain Tightpants”!!!! AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment #33: denelian  on  05/25  at  07:30 PM

Damn, too much caffiene and cigarettes, and way too little sleep, and looks like I’ve had a few “Glenn Beck” moments. Sorry about that. Will promise to behave in the future. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone.

Comment #34: EricJG  on  05/26  at  03:51 AM

I want the Cap’n Tightpants Green Lantern!

Christ Pike just isn’t going to cut it.  I needs me some Fillion in spandex!

I’ve always been more partial to John Stewart as Green Lantern, not the least bit because I get so. frigging. tired. of superheroes all being white.  Also, I have a warm fuzzy place for him because of the animated Justice League and JLU.

Comment #36: Godless Heathen  on  05/26  at  04:44 PM

That’s ironic, because Stewart was originally introduced as a ‘substitute’ for Hal Jordan when he was injured or unavailable. I remember a Christmas JLA when Stewart was going to use the ring to create some money for some inner city youth, and one of the JLA had to tell him “That’s what the Guardians call a no-no”.

I think DC is leaving boatloads of money lying in a huge pile for not immediately doing an OMAC movie.  Just graft the origin story onto the “New Bodies for Old” storyline.  Bam!  Instant classic film.

Comment #38: stogoe  on  05/26  at  09:24 PM

i do hear you on the whiteness of superheros.

which is why AlphaFlight was so cool, while it lasted - various ethnicities, a woman for a leader for a huge chunk of it, a gay man...
sigh.

the only “superpeople” i can think of who are obviously non-white tend to be bad guys, at least part of the time…
i am trying really hard to think of some superheros who are not white. erm… Green Arrow’s son is half asian of some sort, bt tends to be drawn white. and, erm… Shaman… ok, i don’t really read comic books anymore, so i have no clue what’s current. are there any prominate non-white heros in Marvel? aliens don’t count unless they are living on earth and passing as human.

Comment #39: denelian  on  05/27  at  01:58 AM

T’challa, aka The Black Panther, Brother Voodoo, and my own favorite, Talisman.

This is from xkcd.com for your boyfriend, denelian.

Comment #40: Dark Avenger Guardian Chow Mein  on  05/27  at  02:43 AM

Storm, Luke Cage (who most people consider has been fully reclaimed from his exploitative origins, right?), Monica Rambeau*  plus Samuel L. Jackson just signed a 9-picture deal as Nick Fury. smile

* Okay, I know she’s not “prominent”, but Nextwave is just about the best damn superhero comic ever published, so I have to put in for her nonetheless.
