Wingnuts long for a nuclear holocaust

So this video has been making the rounds, and my initial urge was to bucket this kind of rhetoric into same right wing tendency to allow their overactive, violent, hypermasculinity-worshiping imaginations to get the better of them.  Which it totally is in no small part.  They ache for war because of the drama, which makes them feel alive and important.  It’s not a coincidence that there’s a huge market on the right for 9/11 memorabilia, because the day was experienced mostly as high drama, with the tragedy of it only slightly mitigating the wingnut enthusiasm.  Which isn’t to downplay the danger of this at all, because as the recent spate of domestic terrorism shows, right wing fantasists can and do drift into acting out violent fantasies.  And frankly, I think more would if they weren’t such cowards.  Then again, if they weren’t such cowards, they might not be so drawn to violent fantasies to make them feel less cowardly.

But after watching this video a few times, I realize that what Glenn Beck and Michael Scheuer mean when they say that Osama bin Laden is their last hope as a savior, is that they mean as the savior of the Republican Party.  Which I find interesting, because I’ve argued for a long time that neocons and Al Qaeda may be sworn enemies, but functionally they have a codependent relationship and really rely on each other for their own justification for existing.  In that sense, they’re working together for each other.  But I never thought I’d actually hear a wingnut basically come out and admit this.  But there you go—-they get it.  Osama bin Laden is both an enemy and an ally, and they’re practically begging him to attack us so that they’re relevant.

Again, my fear here is that this sort of open longing for terrorism will help push someone, domestic or foreign, to take them up on it.

You think you’ve seen it all.  I can’t believe this.  Oh I know that Cheney and the rest of them desperately want an attack on our country - it’s been so obvious.  But that they’d come out and actually state this.

A second attack would be the One-Size-Fits-All gift to the right wing. I remember talking to a republican friend after 9/11 (who I thought was just a fiscal log-cabin type) and he declared that “If there was another attack like that, there would be a mass slaughter of the Jews in this country, because everyday Americans would no longer be willing to pay the price of having to support a bunch of Park Slope Jews deciding they wanted to live in the Holy Land.”

(Or something to that effect—it was a while ago and frankly I was stunned to hear someone say that).

Remember: When 9/11 happened, you had Jerry Falwell trying it on as an excuse to remind everyone that the REAL enemy was the feminists and the homosexuals.  We started a whole war on the premise that the hijackers were from a country that 0% of them were from.

For Beck and the other TV pundits, another 9/11 would be a perfect excuse to wage war on the Democrats. “Why aren’t you keeping us safe” ... who the hell was in charge when it happened? Dickhead.

Comment #2: Mighty Ponygirl  on  07/01  at  06:01 PM

I had thought that if one was feeling charitable, some of the Cheney-style desire for an attack could be explained by the anxiety of waiting for the other shoe to drop. I mean, if you’re positive, POSITIVE, that it’s coming, then I can imagine wanting to get it over with. (And if we’re really trying to accord the benefit of the doubt, hoping it takes longer to happen is actually cowardly—like, what, better your future children should suffer than that you should?)

Except never mind all that.

Comment #3: Cavity Lee  on  07/01  at  06:05 PM

I think it may be a part of human nature to want to insert oneself into drama. I lived in New York on 9/11 and saw plenty of people of all convictions making fools of themselves, some in the name of revenge, some in the name of politics, some in the name of commerce, some in the name of mercy.

However, I do note that these wingnuts take this natural desire to the next level when it comes to battles and wars, and one gets the idea when dealing with them that being the victim of more and bigger attacks would make their lives complete by justifying all of their bizarre convictions. I think the same forces are at work with the evangelical whackjobs that Amanda called out earlier today.

Comment #4: David B.  on  07/01  at  06:09 PM

I don’t know if the open-longing is really any more dangerous, but I am so appreciative that they finally came out in the open about it.

A right-wing domestic terrorist trying to make his attack look like it came from Muslims is a real possibility, though. There was a bank robbery gang that Tim McVeigh was close to (accumulating cash and weapons for the coming race war), and the leader referred to himself as “Commander Pedro.” Think about that recent home invasion on the border, too—targeting drug dealers, so that the prime suspect is other drug dealers.

But then, there are nutters who are sure bin Ladin was behind Oklahoma City, too. It doesn’t take much.

Comment #5: humanadverb  on  07/01  at  06:27 PM

What are the deeper meanings of this?

This man who said this was the head of the CIA task force on bin Laden.

In this segment, he is saying bin Laden is a powerful political tool.

Benazir Bhutto may’ve been assassinated because she was trying to tell the world that bin Laden had been killed. While it may not have been the reason for her assassination, it was something that she had said and would say.

If Osama bin Laden is dead, and this neo-liberal/neo-con says he needs to attack America again, <u>WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN!?</u>

It explains a whole lot of the behavior from the Left Behinders, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all to find that to be part of the motivation.  What fun is it having dramatic things just about to happen that never actually happen?

“The only chance for our country” to do WHAT?!?

They never say. And no one ever asks them. And no one ever asks Glenn Beck, New Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, etc. ...

And by the way - notice that Glenn Beck says that last weekend he was thinking about what he would do if he were Osama bin Laden. That’s fine, actually, but it sounds a lot like the “understanding” that we were told we’d be strung up if we showed our mortal enemy.

Comment #8: RickMassimo  on  07/01  at  06:45 PM

Well, OBL’s targets were NYC and DC.  Unless these GOPIdiots have some advance warning, they’re likely to get taken out in the next big terrist hit.

Maybe they plan to be matyrs, not TV pundits?

Comment #9: CParis  on  07/01  at  06:55 PM

Hey, maybe we can get Glenn Beck to ride the bomb like Slim Pickins did!

Comment #10: Magis  on  07/01  at  07:08 PM

Firstly, this is patiently dumb.  Americans weren’t just pissed at the Republicans for being ineffective.  They were pissed because - while being ineffective - they squandered trillions of dollars while engaging in national kleptocrasy.  Would a terrorist attack change the fact that Republicans are giant crooks?  Or that they repeatedly sabotage economic initiatives and health care reform?  Would it make their failures in Iraq and Afghanistan any less glaring?

I think if we suffered another attack, the Republicans would go into yet another screaming conspiracy-laden hissy fit and do their damnedest to drive off any potential political gain they could collect.  You might see the makings of a third party, as people look for someone who CAN promise security.  Or you might see the nation come together again - as it did after 9-11 - behind the CinC, and further ostrasize the minority party - as it did after 9-11.  :-p

Comment #11: Zifnab  on  07/01  at  07:10 PM

I would like to think if we were attacked we would NOT lose our minds a second time.  That randomly attacking a country that had no part in the attacks wouldn’t be our first, best option.  That raiding the treasury for the VP’s interests wouldn’t be priority 1.

I can’t stand it if we return to the Rainbow of Terror.  Oooh, bad news for W?  Let’s make it Orange!

Neo-cons won’t be happy until we nuke someone again.

Refreshing honesty from the batshit crazy wing of American politics.  But remember, these folks are serious and legitimate.  They’re on the teevee after all.  They’re part of the range of acceptable opinions.  Single-payer advocates - now those people are extremists.

Comment #13: libdevil  on  07/01  at  07:25 PM

Yeah, watch over a thousand people die in the collapse of a huge building in front of your eyes ... spend days listening to the roar of military jets and sirens ... go downtown to help out as you can ... put up “missing” posters on behalf of a friend looking for her relative ... and when the wind turns, smell the noxious air usually associated with Baghdad or Sarjevo or Grozny over a peaceful and prosperous American city.

That’s the least these egregious scumbags have to have done before they can start telling me that another 9/11 would be a good thing. Assuming, that is, they even have the guts to explain what that good thing is…

“The only chance for our country” to do WHAT?!?

If we’re gonna take power, we need something big ... something crazy and unthinkable ... like, y’know,  some Commie nut burning the Reichstag down…something that would force Germans to demand that their government protect them effectively, and with as much violence as necessary.

Scheuer must love the 9/11 Twoofers as much as I loathe them, because he’s sure doing a lot to bolster the motive aspect of their shaky case.

Overthrow the <strike>negr-</strike> socialist who inexplicably took over the country and institute a strong government which will unite and protect the nation.  Perhaps with snazzy back uniforms and lots of marching.

BLACK uniforms, goddamit!

I blame you for my spelling and HTML errors, Caren!

Zifnab:

No, of course it wouldn’t. But make no mistake about it, it would put them back in power.

That’s all they really want. Mind you, they don’t give two shits about actually using that power for anything, good or bad. They’re perfectly content to let the whole world go to hell as long as they can wipe their ass with gold leaf and have lots of subordinates to order around. For someone with no imagination and nothing worthwhile to live for, the acquisition of power for the sake of acquiring power is entirely its own reward.

Scratch the surface of an American neo-conservative, and you’ll find someone who’s too lazy and stupid to be a proper nihilist, but thinks dressing in black and being grumpy all the time is fucking awesome. It’s no coincidence that fascists love them some Nietzsche.

Comment #17: Dan, Grand High Emperor of Bananas Foster  on  07/01  at  08:13 PM

Obviously that’s what they’re telling themselves, but I don’t know if it’s true- it’s at least as likely that people would rally behind Obama. It’s a pretty sad fucking commentary on the state of the Republican party that they have to openly pray for a “miracle” nuclear attack that will magically drive everyone into the arms of John Boehner.

They are seriously like degenerate gamblers- the only move they know is to keep doubling down on longshots and pray for a miracle score.

Of course no one ever asks them.  That’s because the people who hear that dog whistle already know what it’s all about: Eliminating everyone to the left of Joe Lieberman once and for all.  And then Joe Lieberman, and Arlen Specter, and Colin Powell, etc., etc.

And then they can get down to the real work at hand — getting rid of all the atheists, and the Jews, and then other non-Christians, and then Catholics, and then Mormons, and slowly weed Christianity down to the bare Southern Baptist essentials.

Later, of course, the last two Genuine Conservatives will duke it out to decide which is the holiest…leaving only one insane wingnut left standing on the graves of the rest of humanity…

Comment #19: MikeEss  on  07/01  at  10:06 PM

This kind of right-wing anti-patriotism is eerily reminiscent of the old ultra-Catholic, Republic-hating French right, from the anti-Dreyfusards through the WWII collaborators (the latter of course relished the opportunity furnished by the Occupation for doing the kind of thing MikeEss is talking about.) That’s the level of sheer insane fascist hate we’re dealing with here.

Comment #20: Steve LaBonne  on  07/01  at  10:43 PM

I swear, these turds are the HIV of the body politic.  They want to trigger yet another autoimmune response that destroys their host and makes exploitation more possible.  Fucktards.

Comment #21: Ms Kate  on  07/01  at  10:44 PM

If they were serious about destroying the financial base of the taliban and some of their ugly friends, they would be advocating a wallaby drop in the poppy growing regions.  The wallabies eat the poppies, get stoned, and flatten things in a circular pattern.

this is a big problem in the Big Pharma growing regions of Australia.

There is that. It’d be one thing if they were to have any grace about it at all. But if there were another large-scale terrorist attack (or even a small one), they’d restrain themselves for maybe half an hour before someone started screaming, “SEE!! HAHAHAHA!! TOLD YA!!!! WOOOO!!!”

I wonder whether they ever look in a history book to see whether their darling Winston Churchill talked this way while Chamberlain was prime minister.

Oh, why am I asking?

Comment #23: RickMassimo  on  07/01  at  11:43 PM

Gee, and here I thought it was supposed to be those dirty awful liberals who were secretly praying for another terrorist attack which they would use to discredit the President.

Oh, I get it: these guys aren’t *secretly* praying, they’re out in the open about it.

Comment #24: Dr. Psycho  on  07/02  at  12:19 AM

Wow. This is pretty gob-smacking. At one point I considered Scheurer to be someone with a rather brutal, but usefully coherent, view on the “Global War on Terror” or the “Overseas Contingency Operation” or whatever the hell it’s called nowadays.

But now he just seems to have taken that view, wrapped it up in a bloody shirt, and run with it straight off the top of Empire State Building. Holy Mother of Christ, Scheurer, get a grip!
