WOOOOOO!!!!!!

Sports

Un-fucking-believable that the U.S. pulled that one out.  I dedicate this song to the team and all the fans:

Remember to read Pandagoal for World Cup coverage.

And it’s okay to dance around like a dork. We won in the 91st minute after two lousy calls that took goals from us.  If ever there was a time for it, it’s now.

They fucking pulled it off. I think I didn’t breathe for half an hour there. Thank you Landon Donovan and all the rest of the guys for not giving up after another disastrous call. The only way this morning would have been sweeter would be if England had gone out of the tournament altogether. What a disappointment they’ve been.

The thing I loved about these two games is that each team had its destiny in its hands.  If you win, you advance—period.  It made for good soccer.

This is one of those days when I’m glad I work for an international corp. TVs provided all over the building. All games shown. Nobody working and cheering like crazy when your team wins.

Really pleased for the US, sounds like you had chances to spare even without the dodgy offside call. Love the way the entire squad piled on top of each other after the goal!

I watched the England match clutching a cushion. Wonderful first half, so tense in the second. England looked like a completely different team, hurrah. But they still let it go a bit towards the end, and have now paid the price in goal difference. Fingers crossed for Ghana tonight - you guys can have Germany in the next round!

Congrats on winning the group. For a moment there I thought it was us and Slovenia going through and yet you pulled it off.

Not today, old son. We had a bit of that Harfleur spirit today. Squeaky bum time for us English, but a good performance you could believe in.

What Nic said. COME ON GHANA!

I ran into my next door neighbor’s office on the blown offsides call, I was hopping mad! And then I heard the roar from Times Square about 30 seconds before I saw the goal (Univision was streaming on a delay). And then I ran next door again! Awesome, man. Totally awesome.

Grats to my American friends. Am not in a celebratory mood though, as I’m still weeping about Halak being traded to Saint-Louis.

BTW, I think Montreal just got hit by a small scale earthquake…

A 5.4 near Ottawa,  we felt here in Rochester, NY.

I want the US to win it all just to see the wingnut reaction.

Comment #12: Ben D.  on  06/23  at  03:06 PM

If that happened the wingnuts would just want to own it. They are, after all, fairweather fans of America.

Comment #13: Lee Brimmicombe-Wood  on  06/23  at  03:17 PM

Hmmm, that’s possible, but I don’t think so. Remember how they cheered when Chicago didn’t get the olympics?

Their little kulturkampf manual tells them soccer is a Communist plot, and if the US wins it, they’ll just say that this is proof that Obama is turning us into a Soviet Republic or something.

Comment #14: Ben D.  on  06/23  at  03:22 PM

The World Cup is one of the few times I actually support the national team…  Go USA!  (And if Serbia wins and Ghana/Germany draw, all you English will get Serbia.)

Comment #15: James  on  06/23  at  03:26 PM

Apprently it was 5.5 here in Toronto. I didn’t notice a thing (but I was outdoors at the time it apparently happened).

Comment #16: befuggled  on  06/23  at  03:28 PM

Oops, meant to comment on the game. You can see the games all over the place here. Toronto has a huge immigrant population.

Including me. Holy fucking shit is all I can say about the finish.

So the French have forfeited, the US turned up late, and the English have been left to fight the Germans.

Seems familiar somehow…

Hell, they must be confused right now. We beat a Mooooslim nation with an actual star and crescent on its flag, but Glenn Beck has prohibited them from enjoying the World Cup in any way, shape or form, so they can’t even have their little nationalistic thrill.

Comment #19: Bitter Scribe  on  06/23  at  05:04 PM

You are assuming a logical (and chronological) consistency in wingnut thought.  Let me assure you that if the US does lift the cup, we’ll hear something like “we beat them at their game, proving the US is superior at everything.”

Comment #20: James  on  06/23  at  06:36 PM

But they DID cheer when we lost the Olympics to Brazil, remember.

Comment #21: Ben D.  on  06/23  at  06:51 PM

As a non-fan of soccer, I can’t imagine this being true but then again as an educated agent of politics, I wouldn’t be surprised by this action.  USA winning the world cup would make soccer relevant enough not to see the MLS collapse and push the NHL & MLB to renegotiate contracts with ESPN for better position as Soccer becomes the real 5th major sport of America.

So the French have forfeited, the US turned up late, and the English have been left to fight the Germans.

The Russians aren’t in-fighting as far as I can tell so your analogy falls short. raspberry (I dear god, the emails I get from students are rubbing off on me, they emoticon me and now I’m doing it.)

Comment #22: Xeranar  on  06/23  at  07:00 PM

Winning an international competition doesn’t necessarily translate to interest in the “off” season though.

Swimming is a very popular sport to watch at the Olympics, and the USA always does very well in it, but you don’t see non-Olympic prime time swim competitions on ESPN.

Comment #23: Ben D.  on  06/23  at  07:09 PM

I just hope we win the Cuo! Fuck the wingnut or moonbat reaction! Just relish in the moment and get prepared to go to a bar/pub for the USA/Ghana match.

Eh, I meant no offense to fans of the English team. I simply find myself constantly frustrated by them because they possess so much potential to be great and inevitably squander it away with slow play, disjointed passing, and a certain selfishness on the ball. But, hey, they’re a damn sight better than the mercifully-expelled French team! So congratulations to them on getting through, and I hope they show well against Germany.

Comment #26: Mikage  on  06/24  at  09:31 AM
