Yes, I Still Exist

PandagonPersonal

It suffices to say that between exams and various personal issues, I’ve been virtually absent lately.  After next Monday, that should change.  For those of you who are cursing this news, I look forward to antagonizing you in comments repeatedly.

Anyway, the long-awaited redesign should come at the beginning of the year.  And to that effect, our new header/logo is after the jump.  For the first time in Pandagon’s long, panda-themed history, we’re going to have a black and white design…which is kind of remarkable, when you think about it.

Comment #4: Danica Lefse Queen  on  12/08  at  06:36 PM

it makes me think the name of the website is “Pandagain”

Comment #5: jamesf  on  12/08  at  06:39 PM

I love the look but @5, yeah - it doesn’t look like an O. You need a tubbier bear.

Comment #6: Alkaloid  on  12/08  at  06:40 PM

Can we have some evidence that believers in “Jesse Taylor” aren’t operating from a faith-based perpective?

Comment #7: seeker6079  on  12/08  at  06:42 PM

Damn. I was so hoping you’d use the Pistols For Pandas logo.

Comment #8: Sarcastro  on  12/08  at  06:50 PM

Remarkable?  But, see, ummm, urrrr, pandas are sort of black and white, and…

I still miss the beer can.

Comment #9: Magis  on  12/08  at  06:55 PM

I guess I thought his head works as the “O” more than his stomach.

Comment #10: Amanda Marcotte  on  12/08  at  07:00 PM

I second the vote for the fatter bear, to make it more like an “O.”

Comment #11: Luke  on  12/08  at  07:03 PM

Love it.  The super-panda is amazing.

If it’s really confusing people though, perhaps he can be the first “A” in Panda.

Comment #12: libdevil  on  12/08  at  07:04 PM

Who is (are) the designer(s)?

Comment #13: Cris  on  12/08  at  07:19 PM

If you put him inside an Atlasphere, s/he’d look like an O, be even more heroic, and piss off the Randians.

Comment #14: Mighty Ponygirl  on  12/08  at  07:27 PM

You were holed up creating a Bill Mantlo-Alpha Flight concordance. Admit it!

Comment #15: dooflow  on  12/08  at  07:40 PM

I still think I liked the panda-in-a-bathtub theme best.

Comment #16: bomberE  on  12/08  at  07:44 PM

I second emmit.

Comment #17: The Pale Scot  on  12/08  at  08:05 PM

But but but it’s not black and white.  It’s black and white and red, er, in the cape area.  And all over.

Comment #18: oldfeminist  on  12/08  at  08:33 PM

I like it.

That said, if the head is the “O”, then it needs to be bigger.

Otherwise, make the belly bigger and rounder so the limbs are less sticky-outy.  Less “A” more “O”.

I like Panda as it is, but for letter-use, roundify.

Or leave as is and move to the middle A position—perhaps with longer legs.

(OK, I’ve got to go.  I’m generating language too much.  Brain is not properly engaged.)

Looks good, except that such a dark drop shadow doesn’t work with such dark lettering. Winds up making the text look a bit muddy. Would suggest trying a lighter shadow, if one is indeed necessary.

Comment #20: jpaul808  on  12/08  at  09:14 PM

Typeface makes me think of the movie 2001.  Not a bad thing,  just sayin’.

Comment #21: idiosynchronic  on  12/08  at  09:17 PM

I love the drop shadows on the letters, far more than I should.

Comment #22: Mark Temporis  on  12/08  at  10:41 PM

Hey, can we drop shadow SuperPanda?

Comment #23: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  12/08  at  11:26 PM

Drop shadowed SuperPiratePanda in an Atlasphere!

Comment #24: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  12/08  at  11:29 PM

I still miss the Panda with the ball. But I can get behind this.

Comment #25: BStu  on  12/08  at  11:49 PM

Can you maybe redesign the site such that it looks like a Totally Boring Work-Related Thing, and not a fun blog?  That would be very helpful.

Comment #26: The Opoponax  on  12/09  at  12:12 AM

For the first time in Pandagon’s long, panda-themed history, we’re going to have a black and white design…which is kind of remarkable, when you think about it.

Dude, the motherfucking cape is red!

Comment #27: PhysioProf  on  12/09  at  12:32 AM

I think it would look classier…in a brandy snifter!

This is kind of a tough crowd.  I feel for the designer(s).

Comment #28: emjaybee  on  12/09  at  01:15 AM

Sweet.

Comment #29: brandon  on  12/09  at  02:16 AM

Let the saying suffice . . .

Comment #30: teac  on  12/09  at  03:16 AM

Should also add a favicon

Comment #31: Zarquon  on  12/09  at  04:07 AM

Is that Panda wearing a monocle?

Even those who disagree with you aren’t cursing the news!

I like the idea for a black-and-white design, since they’re often crisper.  The new logo looks good, but I echo the comments that the bear doesn’t necessarily remind me of an O.

Comment #33: Dana  on  12/09  at  09:14 AM

Is that Panda wearing a monocle?

the eyes are different sizes in a O-o type manner, but combined with the eyebrow, it looks a little like a pirate eyepatch to me.

Hence my SuperPiratePanda comment.

I like it, even with SuperPiratePanda being more A-like than O-like.  My critiques are only with love!

Comment #34: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  12/09  at  10:10 AM

Not a fan of the drop shadow, FWIW, but the super-panda’s cute.

If anything, may I suggest the redesign be much less bordered-box-in-box-in-boxy? The great teacher of information design, Edward Tufte, would classify the way the comments are formatted (just to take one example) as evidence of his “1+1=3” rule; the eye perceives the space between the boxes/lines as an object as well, making it harder to see the content.

I do UX / UI design for a living so if you need someone to bounce ideas off, I’d be more than glad to offer feedback.

Comment #35: AJ Kandy  on  12/09  at  12:32 PM

Great logo work.  Cheers to the designer.  I’m looking forward to seeing how you change things.

Comment #36: ice weasel  on  12/09  at  02:12 PM

Oh, and the drop shadow isn’t terrible, it’s just too dark.  Ask your designer to lighten it up a bit and see if that doesn’t work better.

Comment #37: ice weasel  on  12/09  at  02:12 PM

I can hardly see the drop shadows on my crummy monitor.  Maybe they show up better on a flat-screen.

I like the Panda, though you might get twitted for it looking so mad (“PMS Panda” was an early thought).  Progressives should be mad though, at this point, so it works for me.  You could maybe superimpose it over the “o” that it’s supposed to represent, that might fix the a/o issue.

What’s the cape for?  I like it, just wondering.

Comment #38: liberalrob  on  12/09  at  06:40 PM

I would completely lose the drop shadow.  Simpler is most often better.

Comment #39: Sidwood  on  12/09  at  10:52 PM

Liberalrob—seriously? Did you just tell the new logo to “Smile, honey, don’t spoil your pretty face?”
