Stay classy, B&N;.

Barn of the Ignoble?

Comment #2: Ms Kate  on  07/02  at  10:11 PM

What’s weird is that they’re both real books - I sort of assumed some jackass just changed “Islam” to “Terrorism,” but said jackass went and found a book about Islam to use on the terrorism page.

Comment #3: Billingham  on  07/02  at  10:19 PM

And they’re by the same author, too. Cute.

Comment #4: junk science  on  07/02  at  10:20 PM

By the same author?  Howzat? The name of the author on the Islam book sure don’t look like “Anderson.”

Comment #5: Josh  on  07/02  at  10:24 PM

There was no graphic for the book by that title, so they found a “similar” one. Lovely.

Comment #6: Ms Kate  on  07/02  at  10:36 PM

Well, of course, because Islam = terrorism now and forever, amen.

Comment #7: Kathy  on  07/02  at  10:43 PM

They’re not the same author. Sean Anderson wrote the book about terrorism; Ludwig Adamec wrote the dictionary of Islam.

Also, someone’s gonna get a stinging wrist slap for this. snort

Comment #8: madinscriber  on  07/02  at  10:46 PM

They’ve changed the description, too.

Classy. Terribly classy.

Comment #9: Roselyne  on  07/02  at  10:56 PM

It’s still there.  Look up Historical Dictionary of Terrorism.  1st is the right book.  Second is Afghanistan : A Short History of Its People and Politics????  3rd is Historical Dictionary of Ethics and 4th is HDoTerrorism, again, with HDoIslam as the picture.

Classy.  Wish i knew how to save screen shots.

Wish i knew how to save screen shots.

Here is a free program that does it. Once that’s installed and running, you go to the “File” menu, then “Create,” then “Screen Shot.”

Comment #12: asdf  on  07/02  at  11:26 PM

Caren:  “Wish i knew how to save screen shots.”

On a PC it’s as easy as:

1.  Click on alt-printscreen (to limit the screen shot to the active window).
2.  Open the Paint program (start, all programs, accessories, paint).
3.  Paste (control-v).  If it asks if you want to expand the picture, say yes.
4.  Save as JPG.

Comment #13: oldfeminist  on  07/02  at  11:55 PM

Oops, never mind. The jackass has successfully conflated Islam and terrorism in my mind. Good job, jackass.

Comment #14: junk science  on  07/03  at  12:41 AM

As I actually did work in this line of work, I can maybe provide some insight:

The pictures for book retailer websites do not always reconcile well, and often provide best matches possible. This NORMALLY results in things like the picture on display being for a different edition, or sometimes a completely incorrect book with a similar title (“Precalculus” by two completely different authors, for instance.)

the actual titles do match for the first 3 words. “Historical Dictionary of.” The computer system may then try to make a match based on the image name in the profile, and hypothetical keywords matched to the title in the system. From those criteria, and that both books (Historical Dictionary of Islam and Historical Dictionary of Terrorism probably have “terrorism” or “islam” among their keywords) it is possible it was simply an automated match without human oversight.

Of course, it is STILL up, and really, they should have answered the complaint for this faster. It’s also completely possible some jackass set it up deliberately.

Why you need a sanity check that’s a real human.

Try paying one today, please, corporate masters.

You know what I love about the comment threads on Pandagon? Even if I don’t have anything original, interesting or even entertaining to add, I always learn about something that had nothing to do with the original topic. Thank you asdf and old feminist..now I know how to do screen shots. Now if someone could just teach me how to hack the Java shit on my LG Vue phone I’d be all set.

P.S. I am not being sarcastic

Comment #17: shakahi  on  07/03  at  05:31 AM

Thanks for the screen shot info!

For that you might want to peruse the Hack a Day blog for posts.

Oh my, it’s not just B&N;, it’s everywhere.

Comment #20: The Pale Scot  on  07/03  at  11:47 AM

jeezus, GIMP is great. I wasn’t even aware it could do screen shots. I’ve been using the ancient free version (1.0) of WinSnap. Thanks, asdf.

Meanwhile, all the OS X users have been quietly sneering and pushing Command-Shift 3 or 4.

D’oh!

Comment #23: Arakiba  on  07/04  at  01:46 AM

Turns out you were too generous and optimistic taking the screenshot : as of today they still haven’t changed the image, so the original link is still apposite.

Comment #24: Caravelle  on  07/04  at  02:39 AM

As of 9:25 AM EDT, the page is still up; guess no one has noticed yet, or maybe none of their tech people works a holiday weekend.  smile

But look at the price for this book!  $86.25 online price, discounted to $77.62 for B&N;members?  Terrorism for yoru wallet.

Naturally, I saved teh web page onto my ‘puter, for future use.

Comment #25: Dana  on  07/04  at  10:46 AM

*STILL* up, with the wrong cover (the History if Islam)

i am going to send an email. that’s just total bullshit. i don’t care if it’s the 4th of the July weekend - they have to have employees who aren’t drinking and wathing things go BOOM, right? don’t they have offices in Canada or other countries?

Comment #26: denelian  on  07/06  at  03:54 AM

As of 7/7 it has been fixed - and the proper picture shows that it is part of the same series by the same publisher.

That doesn’t make it forgivable, though.
