Your Day In Race

In Michigan, there’s a proposal (#2) on the ballot to permit stem cell research in the state. The “no” side has financed a series of ads talking about genetic research gone amok, presuming that we’ll somehow turn Michigan into a charmingly Midwestern Gattaca if it goes forward.  It also makes the following rather…let’s call it insulting comparison between tiny clumps of embryonic cells and the walking, talking, thinking black men at Tuskegee:

Let Freedom Ring, a Republican 527, is also running ads up here assailing Obama’s “present” votes in the Illinois legislature.  Well, no, actually.  They’re running ads accusing him of loving chicken.

Chicken buttons, that is:

Now, the button in the commercial says “Present”, so they knew what it said.  Why would you take the awkward step of prominently associating a black candidate with chicken over and over again, particularly when there’s another way to refer to it that’s been used in attacks before?  And did you know that we had other black dudes at Tuskegee who didn’t have chicken buttons?  Hmmm?

Incidentally, to let you know how bad the anti-Obama messaging is, LFR has thirteen separate ads posted.  There are 12 days left in the election.

The income tax one is horrid.  Since Barry’s going to let the Bush tax cuts expire, 100% of Americans will have their taxes raised.

Forget about the Obama tax CUTS, he’s going to let the BUSH tax cuts expire!  The rich will pay more!

These are slick ads.  Persuasive, if LYING.

I received two super-horrid robocalls on my answering machine yesterday in NC.  One froma “small town” hick-sounding guy saying that Obama wants to take away our handguns and deer rifles and the NRA rates him as the most rigid senator on gun control.  Oh, and he just doesn’t understand small town people like us.

The other was some Palin-sounding woman, but for the life of me, I cannot remember what she was whinning about.  We got the Ayers/terrorist conenction one earlire in the week too.

Ah, stem-cell research.  Michigan, always with its middle finger firmly on the pulse of the most important issues affecting the state.

How high is the unemployment rate?  Have they hit twice the national average yet?

Op!  I remember now that caffine has hit - how Obama wants to destroy our perfect healthcare system by nationalizing it.

Stem cell research is permitted in Michigan, but the state’s laws on the creation of embryonic stem cell lines are very restrictive, and that’s what this proposal would overturn if it were to be passed.

“Stem cell research is permitted in Michigan, but the state’s laws on the creation of embryonic stem cell lines are very restrictive, and that’s what this proposal would overturn if it were to be passed.”

Which is a good idea if we’re going to try to grow the biotech industry in the state, which would be a good idea with our economy.

We’ve also got a proposal on the ballot to legalize medical marijuna.

No argument from me there, witless chum.  Were I still a Michigan voter, I’d vote in favor of both proposals.  I was just pointing out an extra detail, that’s all.

Support for the Vote NO on Prop 2 is primarily among the Michigan Right-to-LIfe forces. Prop 2 would allow research using the fertilized eggs abandoned following successful in vitro fertilization. These “snowflake” babies are accumulating in the liquid nitrogen tanks of countless fertility clinics faster than Governor Palin’s Saks 5th Avenue credit receipts. Native Michiganders refuse to accept that the state’s once thriving middle-class lifestyle afforded by the Big Three will never return. A YES vote on Prop 2 would allow the exceptional research facilities of the University of Michigan to form the core of what could become a successful biomedical industry providing skilled jobs for Michigan’s educated citizens.
