Your government, ladies and gentlemen

IOKIYAA:

[Journalist Ibrahim] Jassam, 31, has been in U.S. custody…since [September]. His case is the latest of a dozen detentions the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has documented since 2001.

No formal accusations have been made against Jassam, and an Iraqi court ordered in November that he be released for lack of evidence. But the U.S. military continues to hold him, saying it has intelligence that he is “a high security threat,” said Maj. Neal Fisher, spokesman for detainee affairs.

The Obama administration harshly criticized Iran for its imprisonment of Roxana Saberi, the U.S.-Iranian journalist who was convicted of espionage and sentenced to eight years in prison before being freed two weeks ago. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton criticized Iran’s treatment of Saberi as “non-transparent, unpredictable and arbitrary.”

Non-transparent, unpredictable and arbitrary. Kind of like

Phoenician in a Time of Romans’ sexual technique

everything the Democrats and the Obama administration have done in the last two weeks.

After the court ordered Jassam’s release, Fisher said, new evidence came to light that suggested he was a “high security threat.”

New evidence! Imagine that! It’s almost as if our government is completely full of shit.

other than that - new boss, same as the old boss, or whatever that quote. i am no longer surprised by this nation’s government’s hypocrisy, just wounded…

“New evidence! Imagine that! It’s almost as if our government is completely full of shit.”

Nah, that couldn’t be it.  After all, you can’t be a liar, evil, and in the Government.

And it’s not like we have some mechanism in place to produce whatever “evidence” needed to support whatever we want to do…unless Guantanamo+torture counts…

***

Mr. Obama, what are you going to do about this?  I’m not stupid enough to believe you can snap your fingers and fix the economy, or make N.Korea behave.  But there are many things that are under your control — and who we arrest and how we treat those in our custody are a couple of important ones you control.  We didn’t get rid of the Republicans just so you can do the same things they do…

denelian, it’s a reference (at least I hope it is) to a thread a short while back where Piator was trying to make an analogy between lovemaking and something else, and jokingly making it sound weirder and less potentially erotic every time he rephrased it. Very funny.

See here, and here.

To demonstrate the point, see also this.  Like private parts to the gods are we; they play with us for their pleasure.

However, I don’t regard this slow maundering towards fascism as really appropriate for any sort of humour other than bitter sarcasm.  Your government *is* full of shit, and increasingly obama is looking like just a spray of perfume on the turd.

Comment #4: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  05/25  at  10:49 PM

Okay, which thread was that, I have to check it out.

Comment #5: StarStorm  on  05/25  at  11:13 PM

I’m sure that Obama’s new prolonged detention plan would only apply to people who are a “high security threat” and they’d have a periodic review to assess all the “new evidence”... what could go wrong?

Comment #6: windy  on  05/26  at  12:05 AM

Yeah, Piator, I wasn’t entirely sure I should have done that, but it was too obvious to leave sitting there. And, to paraphrase Shaw, life does not cease to be funny when your entire government imprisons, tortures and kills in your name…fucking bastards.

Comment #7: Auguste  on  05/26  at  12:39 AM

BTW - feel free to cut it down to “PiaToR” if you need to - it’s pretentious enough as it is.

Comment #8: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  05/26  at  01:19 AM

Bastards are better than this, because bastards of victims of fate, while these scumbags choose the fate of others. And they come from us, from this population.

I made the mistake of looking at the comments on an alternet piece on Helen Benedict’s new books about the sexual assault of female soldiers. The comments were full of guys going, “Oh, STFU, women aren’t really soldiers, they can’t do the job, other women have it worse, they get pregnant to avoid work, they’re lying sluts, etc., etc.,”. Meanwhile, when the topic is an American rapist like Steven Green, the comments are fewer, about how he’s evil, strange, not like us, not one of us etc., etc., It seems that American men don’t rape but American women lie about it all the time.

Torture and rape have a lot of similarities to one another. The denial about both is almost identical.

Here’s a review about a powerful book about rape: http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A3VHW9PESLU9RB/ref=cm_pdp_rev_all?ie=UTF8&sort;_by=MostRecentReview

Comment #10: EricJG  on  05/26  at  08:59 AM

What the fuck is wrong with you?

And if that doesn’t reveal what your issues are, I don’t know what does—-Ann Coulter and how Al Gore almost stole the election. Rightwinger paranoia in flower.

Comment #11: ginmar  on  05/26  at  09:31 AM

And a novel is a great book about rape, sandwiched between bitching about Michael Moore and Tom Clancy novels. If only Amazon sold penis pumps, you wouldn’t have to leave your couch.

Comment #12: ginmar  on  05/26  at  09:35 AM

What the fuck is wrong with you?

He posts drunk.

He also indicated his surname and home town.  Not very clever.

Comment #13: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  05/26  at  09:58 AM

We didn’t get rid of the Republicans just so you can do the same things they do…

This.  A thousand times this.

We are not Republicans.  We don’t vote for the home team b/c they are our home team.  And even being a Chicagoan, fuck this shit, Barry.  You were elected because you promised reform and an end to W’s failed policies.  You promised to give my country back.

Do it, or get the fuck out.

Oh my head!

I took the kids to the zoo with a cold and then spent the next unknown number of hours in bed with a fever (when you feel sick, don’t push it, even to see the lions)

So I look up what started the Piotr comments…and FIND THAT I’M INVOLVED!!

Um…

...Piotr…

Thanks, but no thanks.  That’s just a bit more information than I needed…

Comment #15: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  05/26  at  10:16 AM

Linking to his own reviews? And a novel about rape? Being drunk wouldn’t be an excuse; it just means he’s a little bit more likely to be stupid. Anybody who reads Ann Coulter and believes Al Gore almost ‘stole’ the election has more problems than can be enumerated in one sitting.

Comment #16: ginmar  on  05/26  at  10:24 AM

Mmm - speaking of drunk, try reading this instead. Entertaining in an alternating “laugh out loud” / “that’s appalling!” fashion.

Comment #17: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  05/26  at  11:23 AM

I was hoping that things would change, I just guess that was to much to ask for.I’ll keep my fingers crossed though

Well, Geez.  Deport his ass as an undesirable alien.  If Iraq wants him, put him on a goddamn airplane, tomorrow.

Comment #19: Magis  on  05/26  at  12:09 PM

We just need to give Obama some time. I’m sure in a year or two he’ll approve a committee to appoint someone to think about what might be done.

Comment #20: JohnL  on  05/26  at  02:15 PM

Well, Geez.  Deport his ass as an undesirable alien.  If Iraq wants him, put him on a goddamn airplane, tomorrow.

He’s being held by the US in Iraq, moron.

Comment #21: windy  on  05/26  at  02:25 PM

Kay,

Even better.  Open the door and let him walk.  He’s an Iraqi, moron.  He’s their citizen.  We are supposed to be fighting for them; be on the same side and all of that.

Comment #22: Magis  on  05/26  at  06:53 PM

oh wow…
how did i miss not just that comment thread, but that whole entire post?!

PiaToR, when i first came to this board like 2.5 years ago, i told you you were very funny and that i was learning from you. hasn’t changed smile

but, i agree - fascism is a scarey, scarey idea. its even scarier to see it happening, step by drag, here in MY COUNTRY. no, terrifying. i am terrified i am going to wake up one morning in a fascist theocracy, where i will simultaneously be burned at the stake for witchcraft, lynched for miscongeneation, hung for far-lefty-liberal “treachery”, stoned for being divorced, and euthanized for being disabled.
and then probably whipped because i can’t spell, and tortured for using words longer than two syllables.

and that’s the good picture - if that abortion comes up, they’ll pull out the cruelstuff…

Comment #23: denelian  on  05/27  at  01:40 AM

lynched for miscongeneation, [...] and then probably whipped because i can’t spell

I think you better hope it’s in that order…

“What the fuck is wrong with you?”

Lesse. Giving a positive review of a book that depicts date rape as a horrifying event? Yeah, that must mean I’m f*cked up. That makes sense.

Anyway, I’m done with this dump. I thought at first it was a group of intelligent folks who simply held different opinions. Now I see it’s just an echo chamber. I’m going back to Dana’s Site (where I got linked to this Blog in the first place) where at least there’s robust debate and a genuine diversity of thought and opinion. Here it’s just MegaDittoes All The Time.

Comment #25: EricJG  on  05/28  at  03:38 AM

How is a fictional account of date rape related to the subject of this thread?

Anyway, I’m done with this dump.

Hey, stay classy, you catch more flies with vinegar than honey…...................

yeah, there is a reason for the listed order. my spell checker hates me…

Comment #27: denelian  on  05/28  at  04:47 PM

so, now that i have thought a minute… were you offended by that? i said i would be lynched, because however much Cherokee i am (i am half.) i look white now, and my boyfriend who i am going to marry after i graduate is black. we get Looks as it is.
i am sorry if i did offend you - i forget what i have told on this board and what i have not.
