Your Website’s Got A Little Bit Of Evil On It

Executive transitions are a weird creature - they begin the day after victory using work they did while they were still running for the office.  The agency is itself quasi-governmental, having power only over itself and drawing funding and resources in a way that only happens every four years.

Which is why the conservative scandalmongering over Obama’s transition site is so skull-crushingly stupid.

There seem to be two big “controversies” surrounding the site: the first is that it was built using Blue State Digital tools and rests on a .gov domain, the second is that it asks for contact information for people who contact the transition.  First, let me say that I oversaw the websites for both the transition office and the Governor’s office in Ohio, so I’m speaking from what some might call “experience” and others might call “crippling libtard moonbat idiocy”.

A transition office needs to be off the ground ASAP, moreso in the case of the President than in the case of any other executive office in the land.  It’s a testament to their planning that they had something ready to go as soon as the government name servers could be pointed to them, and rather obvious that whatever they put up was going to be designed using private-market resources - simple logic dictates that.  As to the use of a .gov domain, well, they’re likely receiving government funding and government salaries to do what’s fundamentally government work.  Mix those two things and change.gov is a pretty damn likely outcome.

The second thing is why there’s a nefarious page asking for all sorts of awful and terrible personal information.  Well, it’s a fucking constituency page.  You ask for information so that you can better manage people’s needs and help them.  See the Indiana Governor’s office, or California’s or Oklahoma’s - these things called “computers” can be used to great effect to manage “electronic records” for people who “contact” you.

It’s not just that all of this is readily explainable - it’s that it’s actually the most efficient and accessible method of doing this.  Auspicious beginning, conservatives - blaming a governmental agency for using government resources to do government work.  Next up: Obama demands incredibly expensive around-the-clock security!

Cptn Ed states:

“The incoming administration technically has no status as a government organization or program until January 20, 2009.”

This is, of course, a lie.

From the Presidential Transition Act of 1963, Public Law 88-277,

“The terms “President-elect” and “Vice-President-elect” as used in this Act shall mean such persons as are the apparent successful candidates for the office of the President and Vice President, respectively, as ascertained by the Administrator following the general elections held to determine the electors of the President and Vice-President in accordance with title 3, United States code, sections 1 and 2.”

I hope we’re not going to be obsessing over every stupid fucking wingnut conspiracy theory for the next 4 years, because there’s going to be a non-denumerable infinity of them.

It’s a testament to their planning that they had something ready to go as soon as the government name servers could be pointed to them, and rather obvious that whatever they put up was going to be designed using private-market resources - simple logic dictates that.

When you cite “simple logic” as a reason, you’ve lost the wingnuts. And their outrage is especially rich in light of the extreme crony capitalism of the Cheney administration.

The second thing is why there’s a nefarious page asking for all sorts of awful and terrible personal information.  Well, it’s a fucking constituency page.

For these nuts, CRM systems are only allowable for use by big corporations. Other such systems, whether or not they violate privacy, are eeeeevvvvviillllll (especially the OSS ones).

Auspicious beginning, conservatives - blaming a governmental agency for using government resources to do government work.

You missed “in the most efficient manner possible.”  But of course in Wingnuttia litany, that’s an oxymoron, “efficient government agencies”.  Fucking Reagan.

Poor helpless little things, desperately squeeking and squawking as loud as they can at every turn in hopes that the larger, bigger beings don’t step on them.

Comment #5: Ms Kate  on  11/07  at  01:35 PM

Actually, I’m thrilled to freaking death that you aren’t required to select an honorific.  I’ve contacted gov offices before and the ones that require a Mr. or Mrs. drive me nuts.

Comment #6: Em  on  11/07  at  01:37 PM

Jesse, you are being entirely too kind and understanding to these conservitard wankers.  This idiocy needs to be not just pointed out, but mocked. Mercilessly, profanely, and with rhetorical dynamite crammed up their anus and the fuse lit while they watch helplessly, trussed in a pair of wetsuits and wearing a ball-gag.

Besides, these idiots have an intra-party civil war to fight. Push ‘em back into the snake-pit.

the second is that it asks for contact information for people who contact the transition

Wasn’t their biggest whine during the campaign that the Obama campaign couldn’t be sure that the contact information that people were giving them was accurate?  Interesting that their argument now is that no one should have to provide that information.

Though I would like to remind the wingnuts that there really is no such thing as an anonymous e-mail.  Even if you can keep ordinary people from tracing back to your IP address, the FBI knows a lot more about these things than you do.  So don’t make an ass of yourself, or you’ll be trying to explain to a bunch of humorless FBI agents in dark suits why the death threats you sent were just a joke.

From the party that brought you Socksgate, Bill Ayers / Tony Rezko, and the Gay Agenda, we give you four (hopefully eight) more years of stupid baseless allegations that have no legal standing or even factual coherence.

I am shocked.  Shocked I say.  And I sure do hope the wingnuts don’t keep screeching and hollering in such a manner that destroys all their credibility.  That would be terrible.

Comment #12: Zifnab25  on  11/07  at  03:03 PM

I’m with Steve and Auguste, not enough fucks and please, let these wingnut fuckers sink into the well deserved obscurity they deserve.

I don’t see the benefit in “countering” the megatons of shit these asshats are going to barf up over the next four (to eight) years.  Sure, once in awhile something will be so entertainingly stupid that it deserves mocking or some meme they’ll try to plant may take and require a response but this?  Today?

Fuck these, and I say with great pride, LOSERS.  Time for them to STFU and sit down.

The .gov argument may have a trifle of merit, but not much more than a trifle.  But it’s a place to apply for a job; they need to know how to reach you to follow up.  If you sent them a resume, they would have it.  If you filled out something on monster.com, they would have it.  So they ask for interested people to give them contact info for getting back about interest.  YAAAAWN.

Comment #19: Ms Kate  on  11/07  at  04:43 PM

whatever they put up was going to be designed using private-market resources

Gov’t work being outsourced to private compaines.  The wingnutters should be happy.  And without a formal gov’t bid process.  The wingnutters should be very happy!

Ha! I hope they try something like that. That would be massively entertaining.

It is whispered on many conservative websites that this business about the Oblammo transition site is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to a battle-to-the-death between the Obamaites and the Masons.  Well, that should be good news, right?  Wrong.  The only reason they’re seeking to defeet the Masons is so that THEY can control the fluordation of the American people of the USA of America and to control the u.S. Postal System, in order to gain access to the hypno-portal of the Masons, that being The Pennysaver.  The DEMONcraps are looking to use the subliminal advertising of The Pennysaver to initiate a full-scale Maoist revolution thast will force us all to live under Shania Law.  WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Comment #22: Rugged in Montana  on  11/07  at  05:43 PM

Of course, most government sites don’t have a privacy policy that includes things like “It is our general policy not to make Personal Information available to anyone other than our employees, staff, and agents” and all the rest of it. Details at my name’s link.

Well knock me down with a feather.  There WAS another reason to vote for McCain… the other, of course, being the desire for universal chaos.

Comment #31: seeker6079  on  11/08  at  10:41 AM

Why is this a suprise.  When Clinton entered the White House, the whacknuts screamed that the new administration had secret security files on Republicans.  Turns out it was just the secret service maintaining the usual security files on those permitted access to the WH, including, of course, Republicans.  Much ado about nothing, but, it did seem to catch the new administration off guard.  Somehow, I don’t think that will happen with this administration.
