Feministing points us to this Time Magazine article theorizing that the reason “some women” don’t want to vote for Sarah Palin is because she’s pretty and confident risk-taking and, well, women just have problems with all of those things (the subtext being that women, of course, normally aren’t those things and are therefore both uncomfortable with and hostile to her for those reasons).
The oddest thing about this is what Vanessa touches on - the piece doesn’t even bother to perform the old black Republican trick of elevating Palin to some sort of enlightened woman status to which all other women find themselves bitterly inferior. It simply postulates that all women are vapidly catty, but that Palin simply has a bit of luck on her side to overcome her obvious gender-based flaws, and is therefore hated by other insecure women with their fat thighs, bad hair and crappy jobs.
This bit from the Time piece pretty much sums it up:
Women are weapons-grade haters. Hillary Clinton knows it. Palin knows it too. When women get their hate on, they don’t just dislike, or find disfavor with, or sort of not really appreciate. They loathe — deeply, richly, sustainingly. I do not say this to disparage my gender; women also love in more or less the same way.
Hillary Clinton, incidentally, won a whole lot of female votes in the Democratic primaries...unless we’re now pretending that the past eight months of “Can Obama win working-class white women?” and PUMA bullshit didn’t happen, in which case fuck you very much for putting us through that for no reason whatsoever. I totally hate you now, entire US media.
