Next entry: Looking forward to a changed Chelsea side today
Previous entry: While watching Leeds-Liverpool in the Carling Cup…
Just thinkin' ...
- We are currently living in a world where there's a chance that Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won't be playing in the World Cup. If that happens, the Mayans were right and you can expect a rapture soon.
- And like him or not, Ronaldo is currently on pace to score about 230 goals this campaign with Real Madrid.
- Good timing: South Africa announces a drop in murder rates. It's like the whole nation is coming together.
- Man City and Man United was one hell of a game. Here's the thing tho - City nearly survived away from home without Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and Robinho. Imagine United doing that without Rooney.
- Early results in the Samuel Eto'o for Zlatan Ibrahimovi? see an advantage for Barcelona. But there's a ways to go yet.
- One of these days, I'd like to feel the same excitement that Filippo Inzaghi does after he scores a goal.
- Yes, Brazilian great Romario is a Socialist. But hey, it's Brazil, you can't walk down the street without tripping over a communist.
- Geovanni is about to finally get a secure home at Hull City. Yet another former Cruzeiro player thriving in Europe.

Although I would miss Messi’s skills, I can’t see Argentina missing out on qualifying. As a Brit I love to see them fail, but it isn’t going to happen - even if they come 5th (which is where they stand now) they get the soft play-off against the 4th placed team in CONACAF which is likely to be someone like St. Kitts and Nevis (OK, it will be Costa Rica, but same deal).
As for Ronaldo and Portugal, they are both perennials at failing on the big occasion. Good to be rid of the whining Ronaldo IMHO. Messi I would miss though.
I agree with David that it’s still a decent possibility for Argentina to qualify - especially if it does end up as a play-off with Costa Rica, who look like they are running out of qualifying steam. (Knock on wood by this USMNT fan…keep struggling, CR, pleeeeeease!
)
Rooney talk is always amusing. I hear so many people bag on him and do the “He’s not as good as you think he is…because I said so…so THERE” spiel, but then others seem to see it as a default that he’s not just good, but very very good, and integral to United. As neither a United fan nor hater, I still fall on the latter side of the argument - I’ve seen plenty of United games, of course, and I have no doubts that he’s a paramount figure on the pitch for them.
I’m a Fake American, so I love socialism. Plus, Romario said nice stuff about Keller, so he’s a good egg in my book…my book of Stuff I Know About Romario, which is a rather slim volume.
I’ve always been a big Rooney fan, and I think he’s now reaping the rewards of being older and wiser. If Man U wins a major trophy, this could be a year Rooney has a clear shot at POTY.
I’m with you on Rooney. I think he is maturing in the right way (not in the Paul Gascoine England mode, which was the concern just a year or two ago). I continue to believe the World Cup this year will act as an encouragement to grow up for many of the players that like to be lads: Rooney, Joe Cole, Lescott, Milner, etc. Rooney will have a lot resting on his shoulders and I think he might be ready for that now in a way that Gazza wasn’t in 1990 and Beckham wasn’t in 98.
