Get Well Soon, Charlie Davies

USA
Obviously we've been dark for a while, and I hate to reawaken this with such bad news, but Charlie Davies, US and Sochaux forward, was injured in a car accident today. Grant Wahl tweets that he's likely to require 6-12 months to recover, and that his future in competitive soccer is in doubt. There was a death in the accident - Davies was a passenger - and our thoughts have to be with that victim and her family, as well as Davies and his.

I was so nervous and worried all day on Tuesday, while we were waiting to get any kind of info. I’m glad that he survived, but of course am so sad about his injuries and the death of the other passenger.

The way I was feeling, similarly to a lot of fans I saw on sites like Soccer By Ives, really illustrates how close the fans are to this team and how much these guys mean to us. I mean…it felt like this was a friend this had happened to, you know? I was so distracted I could barely focus on work. Not to say that fans in other countries wouldn’t feel worried about their own players in an incident like this…but something about how small soccer still is here, and the dedication being a fan almost requires in the States…it just feels different.

I did hear that the doctors said with Charlie’s great physical form, his likelihood of a strong recovery is much better, and that it is certainly possible he will be able to play again. But as a lot of people have pointed out, his speed was one of the most notable things about him…and I can’t imagine it won’t take a hit after such major leg injuries. :(

But at this point, I just wish him health and love and support.
