Ah, see James - I only became a soccer fan in about 2004, so there’s only been one Cup so far for me. And umm…it wasn’t the greatest experience ever for a USMNT fan ![]()
As an SF resident, I’d love to be able to suggest some places, but…I don’t know if I’ve seen any restaurants described as either “Algerian” or “Slovenian” - although since I’m pretty sure Algerian is a lot of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean, it wouldn’t be hard to track that down. Ziryab on Divisadero or La Mediterranee on Fillmore are a couple off the top of my head.
Maybe I’ll try them.. If we get the points.
You were aware that, as bad as it seemed, 2006 was the best performance by a US team in a World Cup held in Europe? Outside of Europe, we do OK:

1930 Semifinalist

1950 1-2, win over England

1994 1-1-1, second round loss to eventual champions Brazil

2002 1-1-1, quarterfinalist

In Europe:

1934 0-1, loss to Italy 7-1

1990 0-3

1998 0-3

2006 0-2-1, draw with Italy was the first point in Europe

What World Cup rituals do people have? Starting in 1998, I’ve “eaten” our opponents when we win or draw—meaning I’ll find a restaurant with that cuisine and celebrate the win. I’m trying to figure out good options in the SF Bay Area for Algeria and Slovenia…
