International Soccer Weekend Update

A look at the latest in International Soccer:

EPL

Europe

  • I'm prepared to hand Barcelona the Spanish League title, Kaka and Ronaldo be damned.
  • Saw a commercial with Leo Messi speaking in English and cracked up when he called himself "Little Messi." You go, Messito.
  • With Ronaldo, Kaka and others drawing attention from defenders and the media, look for Karim Benzema to have a big year.
  • We won't be seeing Ronaldinho beating defenders off the dribble the way he used to, but he looked in strong form against Siena. Perhaps Pato's youth is rubbing off on him.
  • Did Ribery make a mistake staying with Bayern Munich? Quite possibly.
  • I'd say the Russian Premier League ranks at the top of my "Leagues I wish I got to see more of" rankings. And you?

Brazil

  • Avai thumped traditional team Flamengo, 3-0, and are now in the Top-5 in Campeonato Brasileiro. I actually live in Brazil, and don't have the foggiest idea where Avai is. I can tell you they have nothing to do with Acai, the fad fruit down here.
  • Palmeiras remains on top of the standings, but were hard to watch wearing blue and white (to honor their Italian heritage) and not their traditional green.
  • Adriano remains at the top of the goal-scorers list with 10, thus far. Don't read too much into that, though. Just a couple years back, the 40ish Romario led the league in goals.
  • If everyone is indeed looking for defensive midfielders, they could do much worse that Cruzeiro's steady Marquinhos Paraná. He may be 32, but could definitely fill a back up DM role for many a European club.

Ahhhh, it was a good weekend. As my FB status said, a Saturday watching soccer is a Saturday well spent! And it was pretty much all day - 7 am till about 9 pm. I love this time of year!

I was very pleased to see Jozy have such a good debut with Hull. If he’d scored on one of those chances, it would have been even better, but I think an assist on the game-winner plus a couple of good chances makes for a satisfactory debut smile Looking forward to seeing him get more playing time and really get into it.

I watched the Milan v Siena game (hoping to see Gooch…alas) and I agree with you - Ronaldinho looked good, he seemed energetic and confident - and of course, happy. Pato is looking like something special, too…

My disappointment this weekend was probably the draw between the Galaxy and DC United, because LA could easily have won if they’d been able to finish a couple of their chances….ones they SHOULD have been able to finish. The buckets of rain had something to do with it, I’m sure, but still…

Tippeligaen.

Spelled that from memory.

More Eredivisie please.

Damn Auguste, I couldn’t even spell that from memory.

Started the weekend off with a mind-boggilingly dull nil-nil tie between Schalke 04 and Hoffenheim on Friday night. Two teams with stellar defenses, disrupting midfields and rather weak strikers made for an absolute mess of a game. Neither side’s offense ever got into their stride.

Watched the big four in the EPL over the next three days. All enjoyable matches. Arsenal still looks strong as garlic, Man U finally showed up half way through their match, Chelsea looked better and Liverpool are the unluckiest bunch of bastards in the EPL right now. Finished it up late last night with Genoa vs. AS Roma. Fun match when dudes weren’t flopping around on the ground whenever a defender breathed too hard on them.

Can not wait for the Bundesliga highlights. I so totally want to see some of Bayern Munich getting beaten by Mainz.

Yeah, what the eff is happening to Bayern Munich?  Makes my poseur-scouser heart warm that we’re not the only elite Euroclub in the dumps.
