What is Relationship Counselling
Couples counselling is a structured approach to assisting couples to identify dysfunctional behaviour, develop skills to reduce stress and increase understanding. It is based on the assumption that unresolved conflict can be transformed into meaningful interaction and communication. The concept of ‘couples’ in this context refers to married and dating individuals who are experiencing relationship problems and would benefit from professional guidance and assistance. The term ‘couples’ is inclusive of people who are not presently involved in a relationship, or those of a passive nature, and may also refer to those who are cohabitating or living with a partner. Couples counselling aims to build strong, enduring relationships through communication and involves a variety of strategies aimed at encouraging individuals to talk about their problems and seek solutions, both with other couples and also with family members, friends and professionals such as therapists and counsellors.
Who Can Be a Relationship Counsellor
Relationship counselling is conducted by trained, licensed, and recognized therapists or counsellors who assist couples struggling with relationship challenges and issues. It is generally intended to address emotional issues as well as practical issues relating to day-to-day functioning and family finances. Some couples who have experienced marriage counseling have found that their relationship has improved considerably, and that there is a significantly greater sense of satisfaction in their relationship than previously. However, it is important to note that couples counselling is not always appropriate for all couples experiencing conflict or relationship problems.
Couples therapy is usually conducted by professionals who hold a doctoral degree and are recognized by The American Counsellors Association (ACA) as being qualified to provide marriage counselling and/or psychotherapy. A number of agencies, both private and public, offer couples counselling services and many couples who have received relationship counselling from such sources have found that their relationship has improved significantly. Couples who have experienced significant relationship difficulties, either within the context of their marriage or within any other relationship, may find that relationship counselling can help them to deal with these issues more effectively and bring them to terms with the issues that are causing them pain. There are a number of different kinds of relationship counselling, and it is important that you are aware of the services and the skills that a professional relationship counsellor will offer you. If you or your partner is struggling with relationship issues, it is important to note that you should consider seeking assistance from a relationship counsellor as soon as possible.
